    Research projects

Hydrolysates preparation from lignocellulosic materials for biofuel synthesis (March 2011- Till date)

Project Guide: Prof. Kalyan Gayen, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar, Indiao Identification and analysis of efficient enzymes for conversion of lignocellulosic waste (Example-

Watermelon outer cover, Ground nut shell) to degradable sugar under process.o Sugar production from the lignocellulosic material to be used for Butanol synthesis. Experiments to

start by August 2011. Computational model for population dynamics in fathead minnow (August 2010-Till date)

Project Guide: Prof. Kalyan Gayen, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar, Indiao A model has been made using MATLAB which efficiently predicts the Vitellogenin level (biomarker

for population dynamics) concentration in the blood on fadrozole exposure (a chemical toxic) as afunction of time. The model incorporates ~60 differential equations and more than 100 parameters.

o Parallel experiments are being done at collaborators laboratory to testify the practicality of the model. The model is found to be efficient in predicting population dynamics till now.

Cu doped TiO2 nanoparticles toxicity on environmental bacteria (May 2010-Aug 2010)Project Guide: Prof. Pratim Biswas, Prof. Yinjie Tang, Department of EECE, Washington University, USA

o Viability of environmental bacteria (E. coli, S. oneiensis, M. smegmatis) on being exposed to

nanoparticles of different copper concentrations was studied.o Studied survival under UV light, Fluorescent light and dark conditions. Also, Reverse TranscriptionPCR analysis was done to identify the shielded genes inM. smegmatis.

Statistical analysis of yield for various products using metabolic pathways (May 2010-December 2010)

Project Guide: Prof. Yinjie Tang, Department of EECE, Washington University, USA

o Data points (~160) were collected forE.coli and a linear regression model was made which identifiedvital factors controlling the microbial yields.

o Similar model with a few modifications is being made for yeast.

Develop fire protection solution(s) to reduce hazards to fire fighters (Nov,2009 - Jan, 2010)

Project Coordinator/ Sponsor: Underwriters Laboratories, Chicago, USAo Worked on fire safety keeping in mind the Indian scenario which included survey of different fire

fighting methods available and their drawbacks. Proposed a design of fire extinguishing bombs.

Bio Synth: A project on bio diesel synthesis (May 2009-June 2009)

Project Guide: Prof. S.M. Mahajani, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Bombay, Indiao Organizer, Research and Development team of the project. Synthesized biodiesel from Waste

Vegetable Oil (WVO) and palm oil. ASTM testing was done on the synthesized oil. The focus is torun the whole IIT Bombay campus on biodiesel.

o Winner of IGC award, 2009 in Industrial Green Chemistry Workshop (IGCW).

Biological alternatives to chemical pollutants (August 2004December 2004)Project Coordinator/ Sponsor: Department of Science and Technology (DST), India

o A team project where extensive survey was done to identify the general trends in day-to-day handlingof wastes. Biological alternatives were suggested.

o Qualified for the national level presentation (after district and state rounds) at 12th NationalChildrens Science Congress (2004-05) in the presence of the scientists from DST.
