3. Patent Search Methodology
Considering the main objectives of reports, the innovation timeline of Johnson and Johnson patent applications were chosen whose priority date was from year 2008 to 2013 to observe the most recent growth in innovation. WIPO, USPTO, EPO and Patent Lens were chosen as the search database. Several databases require several search queries and give several numbers of results. To make the search queries,
Johnson and Johnson or J&J are considered as the applicant/ assignee and also duration between 2008 and 2013 is also mentioned.
The search in field combination of WIPO was done by using the keywords i.e., Johnson and Johnson in the applicant name or J&J and priority date range was 01.12.2008 to 01.12.2013. The above search query generated
Altogether, 744 patents were retrieved for analysis among which of them was taken from WIPO, USPTO and Patent Lens. Most of the patents were repeated in all three databases. Repetitions of patents or published applications were not considered and duplicate documents were removed. Altogether, 380 patents were retrieved for analysis and the number of patents from each database which were considered for analysis. After retrieval, the non-technical and technical information from the patents were collected and the raw data were represented in taxonomical
manner. These raw data were analyzed to evaluate the patenting activities over time, the number of patents over geographical scope, types of assignees, patent families and international patent classifications. Each and every patent was analyzed for getting the port folio of the company. Mind maps are created to signify the applications of inventions, patented products, and processes involved within the patents of Johnson and Johnson. After analyzing the patents only J&J vision care, consumer and few other subsidiaries are considered in this patent portfolio report.

www.iipta.com 44Portfolio Report (2008-2013)
In order to investigate the trend of filing year- we have evaluated the information of patent filing year from 2008. The patents which are published on or after 2008 must be filed on or before 2008. Considering this fact, we have conducted a statistical analysis on the first filing year which provides three noteworthy information such as 1 maximum number of filing of new inventions (first file) was recorded in 2010 and 2) after 2010; the trend of filing decline may be the invention which filed in last three year might be in process of publishing.
J&J has preferred to file the patent through the disclosure in USPTO which shows a compact market in US. J&J has been mostly focusing on vision care and consumer healthcare products. IPC classification of G02C, A61K occurred maximum time in patent applications which shows the patent was filed on vision care and consumer healthcare division most of the patent filed were product patent and around 30 patents had been granted to J&J in this time period. J&J is divided into three main divisions namely in the field of consumer goods, Pharmaceuticals and Diagnostics & medical devices. The consumer goods spread its roots in the field of vision care,
cosmetics and health care products. The Pharmaceutical products include drugs for treating neurological & Psychiatric disorders. The Diagnostic & Medical devices include products for orthopedics, cardiovascular diseases, coronary artery diseases and neurovascular disease. The consumer products include cosmetics and health care products. The cosmetic products include skin care products which are skin lightening, skin infection, anti aging, anti inflammatory, acne, skin cleansing, skin dehydration, skin care devices, moisturizing cream. The Health care products include personal hygiene products for women.
The strengths of the J & J are its strong market expansion and It has products in different fields like Pharmaceutical, Medical devices & Diagnostics, & Consumer Health Care which makes it strong. It has 250 subsidiaries which operate in 57 countries. The weakness lies in high product cost, which is not affordable to customers in developing countries, their revenue dependence on limited drugs and the patent expiring in upcoming years. The opportunities lie in taking over its smaller competitors companies and the company as huge annual revenue.
7. Conclusion
Johnson & Johnson is a global company which is also well-known for its extensive research quality in human health. To investigate the most current growth of Johnson & Johnson, we have focused on the patents which are having priority date between year 2008 to 2013 and it provides 328 patents. The detailed analysis of patent information shows that the trends of grant of patent during our selected time frame become low by Johnson & Johnson group during the said time frame.

They have to diversify it product range for different countries. The special attention to biologics seems to be great opportunity of J&J in exploring new market sectors. The threat lies from the generic companies which offer similar product to J&J which can results in diversion of its existing consumers.
As J&J group operates on vast portfolio, it has many competitors in world markets. Few of them are Procter & Gamble, Reckitt
Benckiser, Colgate and Alcon. All these competitors operates in different fields, some of the product of the competitors of J&J are Dettol, Colgate Flax, Strepsils, Clearsil, Oral B, Pampers etc. These brands are equally strong as Johnson and Johnson product brand. So there are always tough competitions from these competitors companies. J&J needs to focus on developing new technology and taking over its competitors to be world leading company.
