The College of Engineering students at United Arab Emirates University presented 69 graduation projects for 294 male and female college students, within the integrative design course. The course is taught over two semesters, with 6 credit hours in the last year of the academic program at the College. Dr. Hamad Al Jassmi, Head of the Graduation Projects unit said: "The course is designed for students to deal with a different vision of industrial problems, to find new opportunities to solve them. It's also a good opportunity to attract students of the College of Engineering in institutions dealing with the industry, through their work on their projects”. He added that "The course gives students real experience in design, by making use of the basic information acquired during the years of study to make modern products, or to produce new equipment or upgrade existing operations."

Assessing the health of driving license applicants has traditionally involved an eye test and little else. However, a project underway at UAEU is set to make the process more comprehensive. In a bid to offer a more thorough assessment of a driving license applicant’s health, a team from UAEU is developing a new health screening system to assess an applicant’s full health profile before a driving license is issued. The IDHS3 system, also referred to as an Integrated Driver’s Health and Safety Screening System for Traffic and Licensing Authorities.

Congratulations on theNew Year 2017

تهنئة بالعام الجديد 2017

We live in a time of accomplishments, accomplishments not linked to a particular year. We start a new year, a year full of ambition, work and pride for the inhabitants of the giving land, unrestricted by time and place.

Every year we renew our commitment to participate in the march to support and develop our dear nation in all fields of national strategic importance, and to contribute to research solutions for the good of mankind, and, for the United Arab Emirates University, to reach excellence at the international level.

I am happy on the occasion of the New Year to offer my sincere greetings and wish continued progress and prosperity for our beloved State under our wise leadership, which has spared no effort in pleasing all who reside on its soil by providing all means for prosperity and decent living.

A year has passed and a new year has arrived. We are under a leadership that provides us with prosperity. We are thankful to them and for the new opportunities we have in front of us. We are grateful for the chances we have to renew our enthusiasm to serve our homeland. I wish you all a great year full of progress, achievement and happiness.

With the beginning of each year, we place in our minds new aspirations and we are armed with new energy for work, to give and continue excellence in higher education at all levels, and to continue the process of building future leaders.

The New Year means hope of a new future and a life filled with work to achieve goals and aspirations, because success is born out of work, accomplishment, and high spirits. I hereby call on the University's family members to take advantage of the possibilities available to them in creativity, innovation and excellence in scientific research.

We in the Admissions Department are looking forward to our University students’ creativity and excellence so that they may join the elite group of alumni who have reached the highest positions locally and globally. Here is their chance to shine in the sky of science and knowledge. With best wishes to everyone for a rich and fruitful college experience in the New Year.

Khalid Al Bloushi: students are a fertile environment to be exploited correctly to extract their potential

Sucess Story:

The Geological Society of Emirates currently focuses on student activities and applications, and involves students in international competitions and exploratory camps, to develop their abilities including creative and leadership skills. The Head of the Department of Geology at United Arab Emirates University Dr. Khalid Al Bloushi sees that the University students are a "fertile land", which the teacher must tap into and develop, especially as some of the scientific research carried out by teachers is inspired by creative students’ questions.Dr. Khalid Al Bloushi explained that the Department of Geology at the University is keen to build a qualified scientific staff armed with advanced knowledge of science and technology in all areas, consistent with the programs and ambitions of the State, and to strengthen the role of UAEU in preparing a generation of students capable of excellence.Dr. Al Bloushi pointed out that the department is currently working to cancel student clubs, such as the Geology Club, and all fixed events carried out by the teacher, and to begin opening the door to share creative and innovative ideas from everyone, especially students, to reorient them and give them the opportunity to be great directors and coordinators for the events, rather than just assistants. Students should be free to be creative in the areas they love.Dr. Al Bloushi said “The world is now moving towards preparing the third-year student to be as professional as an employee before he graduates”, stressing

No barriers to creativity at UAEU

that the study environment in UAEU is prepared for new generations free from obstacles. It is an encouraging environment and an incubator for creativity and innovation in all areas, and one in which creative ideas are applied from the research area.

The following is the interview

What projects you are working on right now?

Recently we are working on tracking the scope of fractions at Dibba, which is an important local seismic source, one which controls the movement of groundwater and which represents 30% of the fresh water in the world. There have been signs in the last ten years that encourage us to work more on this research, and intensify scientific research trips to the region. We are also in the process of searching for the ruins that appeared in the city of Dubai, conducting a geophysical survey of the area to solve the mystery of the ruins found under the sand, and considering the possibility of a coast in this sandy region, in cooperation with Dubai Municipality.

What are the local and international conferences you have participated in and benefited from?

My involvement in the founding of

the first International Conference on Engineering Geophysics between UAEU and Al Ain Municipality increased my scientific and organizational knowledge of international conferences and now we are preparing for the fourth session of the Conference. I was fortunate to have chaired one of its sessions, and was within the Scientific Committee in a number of them. The conference was highly rated. I recently took part in the GEO 2016 Conference in the Kingdom of Bahrain, where I participated in the Scientific Committee. The experience of participation in such conferences is a source of increasing geological expertise, particularly this conference, which was attended by over 5000 people.

What about scientific and exploratory trips by students?

If there were no practical application of study, the information would be mere fantasies, so we make sure that our main laboratory is the outside environment. There are a lot of things in the UAE worth studying, and I have seen a clear change in the level of experience of students after these trips, where they have been inspired to implement scientific research outside their specialties.
