From the Director’s DeskA School for Compassionate and Competent Managers

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to participate in this year’sstudent placements program at IIM Kozhikode. We are the fastestgrowing IIM in the country, having increased our student intakefive fold in the last eight years. This has been reflected in anequivalent growth not only infrastructure-wise, but also in takingup the role of a dynamic institution that develops the future leadersof India and the rest of the World.

Our vision is to globalize Indian thought. We believe thatmanagement is an inclusive social activity that brings a diversityof human competencies in the pursuit of higher purpose. This isindeed the keynote of Indian thought that has been passed onover decades, and generations of Indians have lived their livesand attained new heights by believing and practicing thisphilosophy. As an Institute, our goal is to bring these cardinaltenets to a global arena. Our quest for diversity is reflected notonly in the highest ever percentage increase in women candidatesentering the Institute, but also in the variety of areas of expertisethat the candidates possess.

As an institute dedicated to providing holistic managementeducation, we believe that there are many ways in which learningcan occur apart from within the classroom. In addition to lectures, students enhance their overall learning experience throughfacilities such as a state-of-the-art library and the latest technologyresources available. They participate in cross functional interestgroups, committees, social development projects in the localcommunity, and a variety of co-curricular and extracurricularactivities linked to industry and real-life management challenges.

I am glad to present to you our talented students looking for anopportunity to leave their footprints in their chosen fields ofexcellence.

Placement Chairperson’s MessageWelcome to the sixteenth edition of our Recruiter’s Guide. Thelast one year has been an exhilarating journey of celebration, unprecedented progress, and continuous improvement. Thiswould not have been possible without the support of ourrecruiting partners, who have been an integral part of IIMKozhikode’s growth story. I thank you for the faith you havereposed in the talented students on our campus, and amdelighted by the feedback I have received from all quarters. Ialso extend a warm welcome to our new recruiters, and hopethat this year will be the beginning of a long and fruitfulrelationship.

Placements 2012 was a clear and quantum leap over earlieryears, primarily in terms of the quality of offers made. 42% newrecruiters participated last year, taking the overall tally ofparticipating companies to 135. We overcame the fear of aslowing economy and increased batch size with resilience, which was reflected in the quality of offers and the packagesoffered to our students. There was also an increase of 7% in theaverage salary offered to the students of the fourteenth batchgraduating from IIM Kozhikode.

Several differentiators have helped us in our journey. Coursesare designed with continuous feedback from industry, andacquaint students with contemporary developments in theirareas of specialization. The many student-driven activities andprograms on campus, to which we add each year, ensure thatour students are self-starters – inspired to take initiative, andassuming leadership roles with ease. Also, we understand thatfuture managers do not operate in a vacuum, and hence weencourage our students to explore their social responsibilityduring their time here, thus developing leaders and thinkerswho are keenly aware of the interplay between business andsociety.

Our alumni are one of our most significant assets, and havemade their mark in every organization they have worked with.Displaying maturity and leadership in reaching prominentpositions in their respective domains in a short span, they standas a living testimony of the quality students at IIM Kozhikode.Their presence and accomplishments in the corporate worldhave facilitated better placements since the inception of IIMKozhikode in 1997.

As we advance towards Placements 2012-13, we aim to buildon these equities and nurture them to reach for greater heights. It is a privilege to invite you to partner with us, and I keenly lookforward to a sustainable and mutually enriching relationship.

PedagogyThe Case MethodThe case method creates a classroom in which students succeed by exercising skills ofleadership and teamwork and applying theoretical knowledge in the face of real-lifemanagerial problems. The case method encourages students to express a point of view, suggest hypotheses, and come to some conclusions even when faced with considerableuncertainty. The case method enables the IIMK graduates to think on their feet, listen, reason, defend, and work as a team. The cases used in the classroom are reviewed everyyear to ensure continuing relevance to today’s business environment. Some of the facultymembers have been sent to Harvard University for training in the case method.

Lectures and demonstrationsLectures and demonstrations are the primary means by which theoretical frameworksand tools of analysis are introduced and reinforced by the faculty. The importance ofeffective learning in the classroom cannot be emphasized enough. This methodologyequips would-be managers with cross-functional skills and leadership abilities, thuscreating effective team players. Lectures and demonstrations aim to instill in studentsthe ability to think laterally, and develop an entrepreneurial approach to complex businesssituations.

Group Work and ProjectsA major component of most courses, group work and projects allow highly capableindividuals to channelize their creative energies and work as a team towards a goal.Working closely with talented peers from different backgrounds and domains enablestudents to hone the vital skills of relationship building and team play. Projects are long-term group assignments that develop the students’ ability to analyze larger problemsand present plans and solutions. Special emphasis is placed on communication andpresentation skills during the final presentation of the results of project work.

Role Plays & SimulationsRole playing is a very powerful pedagogical tool that allows students to gain anunderstanding of another person’s views and biases. Role playing, when used selectivelyand properly, enhances the communication skills of students and their ability to appreciatedifferent points of view. At IIMK, faculty members regularly use role play to increase thestudents’ involvement in the course by a significant degree. Along with role play, in-classsimulation is another method actively followed for explaining concepts. It provides an on-the-job experience and helps in relating theoretical concepts with practical implications.

Students from affiliate partnersalso spend a term at IIMK and become deeply integrated with campus activities. The exchange program exposesstudents to innovative pedagogical techniques, sensitizes them to cross-cultural issues and provides them witha setting to test their skills in a global environment – all very crucial for today’s global managers.

Experiences of foreign students

Allegra Ciarletti, ESCP Europe, France

I must say I was very impressed by the modernity of the campus and the quality of the courses. But what struck methe most about IIMK was the kindness and the energy of the students, who, despite our cultural differences, integrated me and the other exchange students very well.

Those few months at IIMK were a unique experience and a real chance for me.

Carlo Ratti, CBS, Denmark

I studied in a campus where everything has been provided at top-level and with spaces where I could embracecompletely the awesome Indian culture. My education has been stimulated by skillful professors, showing me whythis university is expanding and growing so quickly. I can certify that choosing IIM Kozhikode has been one of the

best choices of my life and I would never go back and change it.
