Speaking about IIIDSHOWCASE’12, he commended thecontribution of Mr. Kamal Khokhani

and his entire team. However, hefound room for change. “In stylethis show is very much like anyother fair. We need to present tosociety something that is differentfrom what others are doing. almost every significant event hastaken place by default. Even myassociation with IIID SHOWCASE,initiated by Ar. Kamlesh Sheth, is bydefault! The f ixing of theinauguration date was sheercoincidence – we were total lyunaware of the fact that GudiPadwa would fall on this day,” hesaid.

Agreeing with Ar. Karan Grover thatSHOWCASE required furtherbenchmarking, he added: “This is adesign show organised by designersfor designer products. Bankimbhaiis r ight that unless we createanother identity for SHOWCASE, wewill remain one among many.”

Although Ar. Ninad Tipnis named this show as “Mother of all Showcases”, itwas relatively a small show. But in terms of what it offered, it was truly atrend-setting and path-breaking show! It had a large design pavilion, DesignDialogue, where 15 of the country’s brilliant product designers displayed

IIID AvenueFor the first time, all 26 Chapters/Centresof IIID participated in the speciallyconceived IIID Avenue. The Avenue, conceptualised and curated by Ar. NitinKillawala, displayed photographs of works, events and Chapter activities. It grabbedthe spotlight for designers, professionals,IIID members and visitors, who were all keento know more about the Institute and itsCSR activities.

Maximum city has multiple facets and moods. Of these, three aspects –Mansions, Movements and Mumbaikars – were chosen as the theme for aphotography competition launched in January by Akar Unlimited as aconcurrent activity to IIID SHOWCASE 2012.

The contestants had to capture the architecture, urban pace and inhabitantsof this multi-faceted city. Ms. Anuja Khokhani said: “The idea of organisingthis competition was to invite students of architecture and interior designcollege to express their ideas and perceptions about architecture and urbanspace and also people around.”

Close to 110 entries were received for this competition. The Jury, comprisingrenowned architects and eminent photographers such as Nitin Killawala,Sudarshan Dheer, Dinesh Mehta and Israr Qureshi, evaluated the entries andselected the three prize winners. Mitul Kajaria (First Prize), Rajeev Malagi(Second Prize) and Gaurav Sardana (Third Prize) were named winners.

The photographs that were selected to be part of this competition wereexhibited in a stall, Mumbai Moments, at the SHOWCASE premises. The stallwas formally inaugurated separately by Ar. Nitin Killawala and Ar. Bankim Davein the presence of Mr. Pratap Jadhav and Mr. Kamal Khokhani.

some exciting products. This was the first time that so many designers came together for display of their productsunder one roof! A panel discussion focusing on DESIGN: THE GLOCAL APPROACH was organisedfrom 16.00 – 18.00 hours on the second day of SHOWCASE. In an era when“Thinking Global and Acting Local” is the mantra for success in every sphereof life, how can design remain unaffected? In fact, with the “foreign invasion”,it is gaining more and more relevance and acceptance.

The event was moderated by Ms. Manisha Rishi. The first salvo fired at thepanelists - Ar. Kamal Malik, Mr. Jatin Das, Ar. Ravi Sarangan, Mr. SandeepMukherjee and Mr. Subrata Bhowmick – was “Given your very varied anddiverse backgrounds, the expression ‘Design: The Glocal Approach’ musthave some inherent meaning to you. Can you encapsulate what it means toeach of you?”

Renowned Ar. Kamal Malik said that in India itself, he had been workingbetween the Himalayas on one side and Kerala on the other. Hencecontextualism was extremely important and it was a privilege to be in thesubcontinent – the “focal Point”.

Mr. Jatin Das, famed contemporary artist whose career has spanned overfive decades, said that any kind of “rootedness” should ideally take place inprimary schools. That “rootedness” is on the decline. “At the moment, Indiais a confused nation. Our primary schools and academic institutes shouldplay a dominant role in shaping human lives,” he said.

Ar. Ravi Sarangan, Director of Edifice Architects Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, agreedwith Ar. Kamal Malik, stating that in architecture, “one has to respectcontexts”. He stressed on virtues like humility, a sense of equality, andfrugality. “This is important because, Indians have grown in an atmospherewhere nothing is in abundance,” he said.

Mr. Sandeep Mukherjee, Managing Director & Founder of Quetzel Designs,Bangalore, said that we are an ancient culture. “We have been colonised formany years. That led us to absorb different cultures. There is no othercountry like India. We have given Yoga, Ayurveda and spiritualism to theworld. And we have assimilated so many things. Now we can hope to go outand colonise the entire world,” he said.

Mr. Subrata Bhowmick, the famed designer, agreed with the views expressedby Mr. Sandeep Mukherjee. “Earlier we were invaded. Now it should be ourturn to invade. This invasion need not necessarily be martial. It can becultural,” he said.

On the third day of SHOWCASE, the symposium, organised from 11.00 – 13.00hours, revolved around a very interesting concept – Do It Yourself (DIY). Thesymposium was divided into four capsules: Space, Light, Colour, and FengShui, each of about 30 minutes. Four eminent professionals spoke at thesymposium. The audience included interior designers, end-users andstudents.

Inaugurating the morning session Ar. Kamlesh Sheth said IIID SHOWCASE’12was only the beginning, adding that he hoped that the collaborativearrangement of IIID Mumbai Regional Chapter and Aim Expositions Pvt. Ltd.would further strengthen.

Ar. Nitin Killawala, Past President, IIID, Mumbai, spoke on Space. Stating thatspace was a very small word, he said its interpretations were extraordinarilycomplex. He spoke about how the concept of the symposium – Do It Yourself– had been turned into a reality in a building constructed by him in Kharsome 20 years back. After 20 years, the inhabitants take a lot of pride intheir building, which has immense DIY experiments!

Ar. Kapil Surlakar, Director of Light@Work Design Consultants Pvt. Ltd., saidwhen we think of light, we think of turning on a switch in a dark space. “Buthow daylight affects a human being is a more important consideration.”Flashing slides, he showed how excitedly Londoners react to sunlight. InIndia, where sunlight is abundant, its importance is not very well understoodor appreciated. He showed how sunlight activates the pineal gland in humanphysiology – something a designer should be alert to.

Ms. Latika Khosla, Design Director of Freedom Tree Design, a colour andtrend studio based in Mumbai, expounded on Colour. “Any culture hasundertones of colour. India has yellow undertones, Southeast Asia has a pinkundertone. New York, Japan and Korea have blue-green undertones whileNordic countries will have a reddish blue undertone,” she said.

Dr. Nitin Parakh, one of India’s leading and most experienced Feng ShuiMaster and Vaastu Expert offrered practical hints on Feng Shui. On principle,he said he commenced every talk by speaking about the philosophy of luck.“Symbolic Feng Shui (according to which the practitioners display auspicioussymbols) is low-level Feng Shui and its effects are marginal. Scientific FengShui can bring in miraculous results,” he said.

The show – a design show organised by designers to showcase designer products - petered off to a fantastic end, raising the bar for the next event. SHOWCASE has clearly become the ideal platform to display innovative interiorproducts for every kind of space, be it commercial, residential, hospitality or institutional. Here’s looking forwardto the next one!
