long, long time ago, when magicwas the only science known toman, there dwelt in the land ofL l e w d o r a w i z a r d n a m e dManannan. Me was very learned

in all matters of the heavens and earth.

Of great age, Manannan presented a frai lappearance, as though his skin were madeof bleached and weathered parchment.Manannan's impression of fragility lastedonly un t i l one looked into his coal-blackeyes, which burned with a strange fire. This was, indeed, a powerful wizard.

Ithough he was powerful, andcapable of conjuring up vastarmies of spirit servants tosweep his hearth, prepare hismeals, and other menial tasks

with which he would not soil his hands, this solution to his everyday needs was notsatisfactory to him. Tor he liked hissolitude, and didn' t want a lot of spirits(who besides all else, are quite inquisit iveand mischievous) cluttering up his house.Instead, he impressed a very young boy todo his bidding, taking the lad when he wasonly a year old, so he would have nomemories to tug at him in the years tocome.

Unfortunately for Manannan, boys grow upand become adventuresome young men.As his slave grew in stature and instrength, Manannan was irritated to findhim poking around in areas of the housewhere he didn't belong. Or he would climbdown the narrow path leading toM a n a n n a n ' s m o u n t a i n t o p retreat toexplore the surrounding countryside. Evenpunishment did not stop him for long.

ne day, when his slave was 18years of age, the wizard foundhim practicing magic spells. This was the last strawl

"YOU!" Manannan screamed. "You haveread my books of spells and plundered mysupplies of powders and potions. You haveeven ventured into Llewdor again, againstmy expressed command, for nowhere elsecould you have gathered some of theseingredientsl

"You think you will win your freedom withthese tricks?" the wizard sneered. "Youshall see your mistake! You have earnedonly your own demise!" And with that,Manannan raised his hands menacingly.

Suddenly the earth began to shake. Andhis slave was no more. Only a small pile ofashes remained where he had stood.

"Next time, I won't make the samemistake," Manannan snarled. "I'll never letany of my slaves reach manhood. I 'll haveno more accidents."

Llewdor,

nd so the years passed.Manannan went out and foundanother small boy to be hisslave. He stole him from acountry some distance fromto direct suspicion away from

himself. Manannan was more careful withthis child, and watched him closely. Thewizard punished the boy severely when hecaught him away from the house. And hemade sure the boy didn't get his hands oneven any ordinary items that might betransformed into magic charms orpotions. On the whole, Manannan didn'thave much trouble with him, but still, onthe lad's 18th birthday, the wizard zappedhim out of existence.

"It's a nuisance, having to train a slave allover again," he mumbled complainingly."But it's better than having trouble likethe last time."

And so he went on, every 17 yearskidnapping a small boy from his lovingparents, then slaying him on the 18thanniversary of his birth. (Occasionally thecycle was shortened slightly, when heunfortunately chose a precocious childthat learned too much before his 18thyear.)

And time went on...

TIPS FOR THE BEGINNING ADVENTURER

If you haven't played one of Sierra's 3-D animated adventure games before, here are a few suggestions to help you get started.

LOOK everywhere. When you go somewhere you haven't been before, thefirst thing to do is look around. You should get a description of the generalarea. Often there is a clue to the game or an indication that something in thescene bears further investigation.

EXPLORE each area of the game very carefully. Search the wizard'sdomain, both inside and out - even (or perhaps especially) those places hedoesn't want you poking around in. Venture out to mix and mingle with theinhabitants of the surrounding countryside of Llewdor.

DRAW A MAP that includes each place you visit, objects found, dangerousareas, any and every landmark you see along the way. Try not to miss anyarea, or you may miss an important clue or item necessary to the completionof your quest. And don't think that because you've been somewhere once, itwill be the same the next time. The population of Llewdor (and othercountries you might visit) can move around as well as you (some better).

Here's an example of a map you might draw:

In addition to constructing your own map, you may also find a certain magic.map hidden in the wizard's house. It's up to you to unlock its special powers..

Keep your ears open — TALK to just about everyone you meet, but usediscretion! Some characters will be friendly and helpful. They will give youvaluable information and advice. Others wil l try to trick you, so be ready torun and hide. If that doesn't work, you may have to find some other way ofoutwit t ing them.

PICK UP anything that isn't nailed down. You'll come across many objectsthat have a use somewhere else in the game. Your inventory is listed on the"status" screen (accessed with the TAB key).

USE the items you pick up to solve large and small problems in the game. Some problems have obvious solutions. If you need to dig a hole, use ashovel. Other problems require more imagination to solve.

BE CAREFUL. The way you must travel is long and dangerous. Be sure toremain alert at all times — disaster may strike in the most unlikely of places.

SAVE YOUR GAME often. That way, if misfortune should strike along theway, you won't have to start over from the beginning (see your reference cardfor instructions on saving your game).

DON'T GET DISCOURAGED. If you come to an obstacle that seemsinsurmountable, don't despair. Explore the game some more, then come backlaler and try again. If you're stuck, you might try backtracking to an earlierpoint in the game — you might have forgotten to do something vital. Or youcan buy a King's Quest III hint book using the enclosed order form.

Be brave, be resourceful, be true.

The -following panes contain the only l e g i b l e excerpts from"The Sorcery of Old" (Manannan's book o-f magic). AH otherspells in the volume are so -faded that they areindeciperable to mortal eyes.

To perform any o-f these spells, open "The Sorcery o-f Old" tothe appropriate page and follow the directions precisely.Any deviation from the correct procedure, including theEXACT recitation of the empowering verse, can cause fatal<if sometimes humorous) results.

Note: parentheses indicate descriptive text, notinstructions you need to type into the computer.
