iied's future work in redd+
DESCRIPTION
The presentation of Isilda Nhantumbo, a senior researcher with IIED's Natural Resources Group, to the IIED-hosted Moving ahead with Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) workshop on 9-10 April 2014. The presentation, made during the fifth session on social and environmental safeguards of REDD+, focused on IIED's future work in REDD+ and its partners. More information on Nhantumbo’s work: http://www.iied.org/users/isilda-nhantumbo. Implementing REDD+
What IIED has been doing
• Risks of commodification of carbon and increased value of forests; active protection of rights
• Inclusive REDD+ models • Gender equity and safeguards• Transaction costs• Preferences of communities
• Lessons for REDD+: compensation to incentivize change in behaviour and practices;
• Governance is crucial for effective payments
• Agriculture – land productivity and food security
• Efficiency of production and consumption of biomass energy (concession model)
• Viability and opportunity costs• Reconciling REDD+ and
development priorities
• Protection of carbon stocks may contribute to enhancement of biodiversity conservation
• SESA• Synergies between CBD and
REDD+ • Developing countries set
priorities• Equity
Biodiversity and
safeguards

6. Work ahead• Economics of pro-poor REDD+ delivery models
• Viability of models - energy, agriculture, urbanization, domestic and international demand
• Benefit sharing and preferences (scale and representativeness)
• Approaches to monitoring smallholder carbon projects
• – reduce transaction costs
• Research and testing REDD+ on the ground through local partners – budget funds for investment packages
• Safeguards – promoting equity in REDD+
• Gender – drivers-commodity nexus, value chain analysis to understand the profit margins and how to ensure win-win strategy options for men and women
• Private sector REDD+ – effective, equitable and inclusive
