PARKING DAYS

The IIDA San Antonio City Center participated in Parking Days for the second time this September, a

national event that is put on locally by the SA Center for Architecture organization. Parking Days

encourages artists and local organizations to create a city park within the boundaries of a parking space,

and promotes the addition of green space in urban environments. The IIDA Student Chapter also

participated in the event and had the parking space next to ours. Our theme this year was the “Living

Living Room”, and we received a lot of positive feedback from the general public who was there to view

the exhibit. As a whole, we feel like this was a great (free) way to promote our organization and interact

with other design organizations in our community.

On September 22nd

, our SACC Membership Chairs Frieda Lujan of Tri-kes and Debby Tolar of Crossville Tile put together a memorable Membership Event at Barbaresco’s restaurant on San Pedro Ave. The subject was “What a Sweet Deal!” and focused on the advantages of IIDA Membership with a desert-themed twist. We also had a chance to give away two free IIDA Memberships; Marthe Aston was the recipient of the Professional Membership and Maria Dominguez was the recipient of the Associate Membership. Tri-kes also donated a Kindle e-reader as a door prize which only helped to further sweeten the event. Special thanks to our event underwriters, Antron, Allegiance Floors, Jones & Cook, Crossville Tile, and Tri-kes.

GINGERBREAD CHALLENGE

The Children’s Museum in conjunction with the San Antonio Center for Architecture hosted the Second Annual Gingerbread Competition in the Pearl Studio on November 12

th. The Challenge

benefited the Children’s Museum, and was in the style of “Iron Chef”, as entrants were given a strict 3-hour time limit to complete their designs and did not know what ingredients would be given until the start of the challenge. The challenge was open to view by the public during the Pearl’s Farmer’s Market, and over 3,000 people stopped by to see the competition in action. Team IIDA went up against several local prestigious architecture and engineering firms, and we are proud to say that we won First Place! Our theme was ‘A Very Trailer Christmas’, and overall we had a blast participating in the event.

WINTER FESTIVAL EVENT

The IIDA San Antonio City Center hosted the very first Winter Festival Event at the Family Celebration venue on December 16

th and we had a great time doing so! The evening featured a silent auction, live music by the Gary Lee

Cox Band presented by Tandus, Christmas crafts by KC Repsource and Innovative Environments, as well as face painting by Patcraft. We even had a special guest at the event- Santa Claus presented by Texas Wilson and Steelcase! The venue itself was great and lent itself well to this family-themed event, with numerous playscapes, trampolines, play houses, and a putt putt course. Attendees were also kind enough to bring canned goods and non-perishable food items which were donated to the San Antonio Food Bank. Thank you so much to our underwriters Texas Wilson, Steelcase, MDC Wallcovering, Innovative Environments, and Tri-kes Wallcovering, and to everyone who bundled up and came out to that evening!

We can’t wait to carry this event forward for years to come!
