the Chicago forgery lit has been closely I llotd by J H Walker a Pinkerton detective from the Cincinnati office of I this great firm I It was Walker who located the man j near this city and planned his capture 1 I when his private yacht Kathryn was i boarded as she lay in midstream off Iayport by a party of officers Nord ¬ strom was taken from hfs bunk and brought to this city The story of N rdstroms career since the forgery at Chicago reads like a chapter from a dime novel From Chicago where he was C A Cole Nordstrom appeared in various cities under other names At San Fran- cisco ¬ where he was tracked he oper ¬ ated under the name of B F Kava naugh Under this name also he car ¬ I ried on crooked deals at Galveston Tex and aft New Orleans From New Orleans he was follower to Brunswick- Ga where he had dealings with the Brunswick Bank and Trust Company- as F lL Wood The forgery ofthe draft on the Chi cago bank was committed on Decem ¬ ber 3 last From that time until De ¬ cember 30 Nordstrom was followed over miles of territory and finally trac- e to Brunswick Here he Jived in lux ¬ ury for a time and purchased from FI- D Aiken president of the Brunswick Bank and Trust Company the yacht aboard which he was beginning a world tour when captured Front Brunswick Nordstrom came to Jacksonville and aboard the boat whose name was changed from Lucille to Kathryn Coming to Jacksonville the Pinker- ton man picked up the clue and thinking Nordstrom had gone to St Augustine in his trim little yacht Detective Walker went to that city yesterday He learned that the boat with its notorious owner had stopped- at Mayport Walker again reached this city last evening and conferred at once with Sheriff Bowden His story was quickly told and the everready guardian of the law in Duval county nothwith ¬ standing the fact that the night was- a fearful one at once began prepara ¬ tions to join in the trip to the bar in an effort to land the forger The wind was blowing a gale a cold northwester and the river was rough and choppy when the excursion boat Margaret chartered by the officers sot out on her trip to the mouth of the river Aboard were Sheriff Bow den Pinkerton Detective Walker and his assistant- The I trip to Newport was a rough- one but the natty little Margaret car- ried ¬ I the five officials safely to their destination It was 1130 oclock when Detective Walkers assistant McCullough who had located the Kathryn and her own ¬ er pointed out the craft to the other officers and an order was given to put out all lights Gliding alongside the Kathryn as noiselessly as possible the engines of the Margaret ceased puf ¬ fing and Sheriff Bowden Deputy Jones and Detectives Walker Craw ¬ I ford and McCullough boarded Fearlessly entering the sleeping parantments of the boat guided only by H flash from an electric pocket lantern Sheriff Bowden pounced upon the sleeping Nordstrom Holding a revolver at Xordstroms chest as he reached for a Winchester rifle above his head the sheriff calmly spoke the words Youre my man Corne out Ve want you With the aid of Deputy Jones and Detective Crawford Nordstrom was half pulled from his bunk and hurried aboard the Margaret in his night- clothes The Kathryn was tied to the stern of the Margaret and with the other members of Nordstroms party I aboard xvns towed to the city On the return trip Nordstrom
