INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PHILADELPHIA CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

Our story begins in 1908 when Waldo Stevenson, a missionary, and Edward Cope Wood, Director of the University of Pennsylvania Christian Association, chanced upon a group of Chinese students on campus. Touched by their evident loneliness and the prejudice and discrimination they and their friends experienced, Wood asked the Reverend and Mrs. A. Stevenson to open their Larchwood Avenue apartment to foreign students studying in the area.

Two years later in 1910, Wood persuaded the Christian Association to sponsor the Stevensons’ work. Thus began International House, a movement started in Philadelphia, now with 22 Houses around the globe. International Houses World Wide is united by one mission: To provide students of different nationalities and diverse cultures with the opportunity to live and learn together in a community of mutual respect, understanding, and international friendship.

International House Philadelphia is unique among all other Houses. We do not solely provide students the opportunity to live and learn together; for over 30 years, IHP has presented distinctive film and performance — from classic to cutting-edge — to the Philadelphia region.

Today we continue to serve as a cultural intersection where individuals and ideas connect in a vibrant setting.

Read on to learn more about our special Centennial events — all of which are related to the central theme of Movement; and to view great offers from our colleagues in the Greater Philadelphia Community, which are presented to help us celebrate the region’s dynamic arts community.

We look forward to seeing you at upcoming events throughout our Centennial year.

“We look ahead to sustain our unique commitment to the social, cultural, and intellectual life of students and residents of the Greater Philadelphia region.”

LOOKING TOWARDS IHP’S FUTURE.

As International House Philadelphia celebrates 100 years since its founding, I cannot help but imagine IHP’s future. From a chance meeting of a sympathetic individual and a group of Chinese students studying at Penn, a Movement grew. A Movement that now reaches people in nearly every continent through 22 International Houses World Wide.

Going forward, IHP will continue to contribute to the development of skilled future leaders through intercultural, educational, and humanities programs. And we look ahead to sustain our unique commitment to the social, cultural, and intellectual life of students and residents of the Greater Philadelphia region.

This year you’ll witness cultural and arts programming specifically conceived for IHP’s Centennial Celebration. Presented under the theme of Movement, the series features works from today’s leading visual artists and musicians, as well as selections for our robust film program. You will also discover cultural programs from our Resident Activities and Advisory Center, also created around the topic of Movement.

IHP brings the best of international arts and culture to our neighbors; we invite you to visit as one of our valued Members this summer, and we welcome the chance for IHP to be a part of your many joyful memories this year!

Tanya SteinbergExecutive Director

“We provide a place to live where cultural and ethnic differences are shared and celebrated.“

WELCOME TO A GREAT PLACE.At International House Philadelphia we integrate students from around the world, representing over 80 countries, including the United States. We provide a place to live where cultural and ethnic differences are shared and celebrated, and where students can explore the American culture. Working with Residents and our constituents we embrace IHP’s overarching mission, “to encourage cooperation and respect among the peoples of all nations,” by providing community living and programs that educate Residents, while developing their interpersonal leadership and management skills.

Never forgetting who we are, and who we are here to serve, the Residential Center continues to grow and adjust to the changing needs of its population. By providing self-development programs, leadership training, and the ability for Residents to create and design educational and social opportunities, we are continually allowing our Residents to define who they are.

Many colleges, universities, and smaller organizations are recognizing the need for comfortable and safe learning environments for International and American student populations. However, at IHP we provide these services and much more. Here you will find a facility that is warm and welcoming, and a place that is culturally stimulating and thought provoking.

International House Philadelphia and The Ibrahim Theater present hundreds of public programs to over 20,000 Philadelphia area residents throughout the year, fostering a global community by celebrating the world’s cultural diversity and probing issues from an international perspective.

For over 30 years, IHP has been the leading venue in Philadelphia for adventurous arts programming from around the globe. Film @ International House fosters a greater appreciation for film and the moving image as both a powerful means of artistic expression and as an avenue for greater cultural, political, and social understanding. Live @ International House presents the most unique, innovative, and influential performers of the late 20th century, allowing us to both challenge and entertain our diverse audience. And with an emphasis on experimentation and improvisation, the stage at IHP is the ideal forum for discovering new sounds and ideas. Art @ International House utilizes two gallery spaces to feature video and two-dimensional art, and showcases local artists and organizations in a non-traditional setting.

We hope to see you throughout our Centennial year. And please visit our outstanding collaborators who so generously contributed to The Centennial Passport to the Arts.

When an organization is able to commemorate 100 years since its founding, the opportunity is presented to ask important questions. How have the world and the organization changed in the last 100 years? And more importantly, how will the organization address the coming changes of the next 100 years?

In recognition of the Centennial year of International House Philadelphia’s founding, we present a major exhibition of film, video, music, and mixed media work — all of which are related to the central theme of Movement. Movement is being interpreted both literally — in terms of work that embraces physical motion, changes through time, geographical shifts — and figuratively, in terms of work that moves between media or crosses the borders of convention. We are excited to both celebrate IHP’s 100th anniversary and look forward toward its future in arts programming. Throughout its history, IHP has served as a cultural intersection where individuals and ideas connect in a vibrant setting. Our hope is to build on an already-dynamic annual roster of film screenings and music events by opening up our theater and exhibition spaces to new forms of media that broaden the scope of our current programming. As a forum for shape-shifting, boundary-crossing art, the Movement series invites and engages creative cultural dialogue. The Curatorial Staff International House Philadelphia

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS FOR OUR CENTENNIAL YEAR

Pre-code Hollywood Outdoor Screenings features International House, Design for Living, Animal Crackers and Platinum Blonde. Bawdy? Risque? Unfiltered? These are some of the words used to describe the films made in Hollywood before the implementation of the Hays Code in 1934. These were often free of the type of censorship that would come as a result of the creation of the Production Code Administration.

Perhaps one of the most important experimental artists living today, Michael Snow is a Canadian artist who creates in a multitude of mediums including film, video, sound, painting, sculpture, photography, and improvised music. Snow presents a survey of works both older and more recent and performs with longtime collaborator John Oswald, a composer, musician, and media artist based in Canada.

Oscar-nominated director Sam Green (Weather Underground) presents Utopia in Four Movements. A years-in-the-making work of art, this multi-media project incorporates elements of documentary, live performance, and live music. It is presented as part of the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe Festival.

A Page of Madness is a collaborative work and live score, commissioned by IHP as a centerpiece of the Movement program. Local composer Gene Coleman and Japanese artist Akikazu Nakamura created a new musical composition for the 1926 Japanese silent film of the same name. This performance is a reimagining of the role of contemporary music in the interpretation and presentation of historic films.

Six Plus Six is a video installation based on the myth of Persephone and consists of two films, one shown in one room and one shown another. Since the action and characters of the story are spread between the two rooms, each film is able to show only half the story.

PROGRAMMING HIGHLIGHTS FOR OUR CENTENNIAL YEAR

Directors in Focus – The Early Films of Atom Egoyan features films from this acclaimed Canadian director prior to his breakthrough work Exotica. This series includes Calendar, Speaking Parts, Family Viewing and Next of Kin.

Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts Weekend includes Independent Artist Movement in Cinematography, an evening of film dedicated to directors of silent cinema who utilized techniques of the Avant-Garde artists of the time; and Wave Upon Wave, by Soundfield, and Trade Winds from Japan, by Network for New Music, new works of music, video, and dance commissioned by and created for PIFA.

Pop Cinema is a three-night exhibition of Pop Art film screenings with a discussion panel that surveys the influence of motion pictures on Pop Art. While many of the American and British artists associated with Pop Art created original films, only those of Andy Warhol are widely known. Pop Cinema raises awareness of the contributions other artists and film documenters made to the Pop Art film genre. This is the first time in the US that a collection of films represent the early appearance of Pop Art in motion picture.

Matt Suib and Nadia Hironaka are Philadelphia-based artists who work primarily in video. Their productions are often comprised of large scale, multi-channel projections that are immersive visual environments. The duo will create a new two-channel piece accompanied by a live score by musician C Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core).
