On Monday, December 2 the third and fourth grade sang at the annual Carlmont Tree Lighting Ceremony. During the ceremony, many different schools sang Christmas songs, such as Notre Dame Elementary, IHM, and the tri-school chorus from Serra, Mercy and Notre Dame high schools. There were many booths with goodies. At the end of the singing, the big tree’s lights flashed on. The Christmas season seemed to begin.

On coronation day the gates must open and Elsa will be crowned queen. After the coronation, at the party Elsa gets frustrated and lets everyone see her icy powers. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is an action-packed, romantic and funny movie. If you have seen The Hunger Games you will understand Catching Fire. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark go on tour to visit other districts and say something about that person. President Snow feels that Katniss and Peeta cheated. So the new game maker and President Snow take all the previous victors and put them in the hunger games including Katniss and Peeta. I don’t want to give it away, but I will tell you this; Finnick, one of the victors, teams up with Katniss. All of the other people they know team up. Later in the movie, a technologist wraps a wire around the tree where lightning struck. There is still some wire left, so Katniss wraps the wire around one of her arrows. She shoots the force field around them. This causes her to grow weak and she is captured by aircraft. I will not spoil the end, but I can guarantee that this is a movie you won’t want to miss!

Ipad Air The Ipad Air also has an advanced wireless system. This allows consumers to connect even faster and have greater coverage. This allows us to use the Ipad Air in more places than before. This tablet is better than other Android choices because it comes with better features and a full package to please the user more. The Ipad Air is not only light, it is balanced. It also has features that were present in previous Ipads in fairly similar places. The power key and the volume buttons are still present as a symbol of Apple’s trademark designs. Despite other rising technology powerhouses Apple stays at the top of the tablet market with this amazing product! Online Sources Include: www.apple.com, www.techradar.com, www.engadget.com

IHM INSIDER Tech Reviews

IOs7 Apple has released a brand new phone, the IOS7, that’s already rocking up the charts with its brand new format and advanced graphics. Apple has completely changed the look of the IOs7 with version 7, starting with the lock screen and continuing with the icons of default apps, stuff like Notification Center, and with one click of the home button, a much more practical, modern version of the multitasking appears. Apple has scored for brighter, bolder colors and graphics and the new phone has less shadows and gradients. Many people have also commented that the new addition to the system, the Control Center proves incredibly useful. This new feature provides quick access to commonly used settings, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb Mode, and Rotation Lock. It also gives you access to Calculator, Timer, Camera, and other media player controls, such as AirDrop and AirPlay, and brightness. Also, the voice recognition feature, Siri, has evolved and now provides much more info than before. Other major apps, such as iTunes, Camera, and Safari have developed into a bright, modern, up-to-date featured system. As many of us teenagers and adults agree, Apple’s debut has definitely been the new version of the IOs7. The fourth graders drew themselves falling back in space. Their teacher, Ms. Hammel, put their drawings on their desks to look like the fourth graders where actually falling back into their chairs out of excitement to see their parents at school. The fourth graders took the time to create these beautiful drawings just for their parents at back to school night. Here are some of our favorite drawings.

Fifth grade has created their very own T-shirt factories. Each has natural resources such as cotton, capital resources such as factories, and human resources such seamstresses. Ms. Hoggat made this project awesome for learning resources and as a means for the 5th graders to show off their art and collage skills. Here are some examples. By: M.L. David and Sofia Caballero

Balloonist Tried to Fly Over Atlantic Ocean By Andrew Shaw and Nihaal Nayer

Jonathan Trappe, a fearless man tried to fly over the Atlantic Ocean with 370 helium balloons. This goal sounds pretty crazy to us! Is anyone else thinking of the movie Up?

The 39-year-old man aborted his mission after twelve hours and 470 miles. He reached Newfoundland, Canada! According to what he posted on his Facebook page: ‘’Hmm, this doesn’t look like France,’’ it seems as though he did not reach his goal. He landed late Thursday night. He was afraid he was going to die as he attempted the scary crash landing. “Honestly, I did not know if I would survive that landing,’’ Trappe said, as he crash landed in the pitch dark! http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/13/world/americas/

Food for the Future By: Orlando Caballero and Sean Doheny Scientists at the University of Maastricht (located in the Netherlands) announced that they were able to produce the first hamburger made from lab grown meat. The project took two years to complete at a cost of about $325,000 USD. Sergey Brin, one of the founders of Google, paid for the project. Why spend so much time, effort or money creating fake meat? Dr. Mark Post, the lead scientist behind the new burger, said, “lab-made meat could provide high-quality protein for the world’s growing population while avoiding most of the environmental and animal-welfare issues related to livestock production.” The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that the demand for meat will double within the next 40 years. Given that almost 70% of agricultural land is already being used for livestock production, there is very little room for expansion, without edging out fruits and vegetables completely. Dr. Post and many other experts believe that the only way to be able to meet this demand and help reduce the environmental impact is by creating lab grown meat. If they find there is a market for lab grown beef, the same methods could be used to grow other proteins such as chicken, lamb, fish, or pork in the lab. How did they do it? In order to create this “cultured” beef, Dr. Post’s team started with taking tissue samples from living cows, the stem cells were extracted from the tissue and then grown into 20,000 muscle fiber strips in a lab to form one patty. Then to make it better resemble ground beef, they added in bread crumbs for texture, beet juice for coloring and salt for taste. So what did the world’s most expensive burger taste like? Two food tasters joined a chef and a scientist on a stage in London. Josh Schonwald an American food journalist and Hanni Rutzler an Austrian nutrition scientist thought it had a bland neutral flavor but with a similar texture as beef. Neither of them gave it a good or bad, which Dr. Post viewed as a positive response given that the taste can only get better from here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22885969
