HAPPENINGS TAYLOR’S SCHOOL OF COMPUTING AND IT Issue 9 (April - June 2017) One Last Time… FYP or otherwise known as Final Year Project is a compulsory component for all students who are doing their final year in any degree programs and it is done over two semesters (9 - 10 months approximately). It’s the final piece where students get to demonstrate their abili�es in the form of a project related to the course they have chosen where they implement the skills they’ve learnt throughout their study period, addi�onal skills or knowledge they have obtained during the development phase of their masterpiece and not to forget, the requirements from industries. IHL-MSC Start-up Challenge Taylor’s School of Compu�ng & IT has stood out at the recent i-MSC Malaysia Start-up Challenge for the year 2016. The champions were highly inspired to make the world a be�er place by pu�ng their ideas and skills to the fullest. Final Year Project Showcase, a day where the abili�es and true poten�al of students is seen, FYP offers exposure and experience to students to become be�er at what they do one last �me before they leave the university to become working adults. VoltEdu, one of the many teams that represented Taylor’s University School of Compu�ng & IT, emerged as the champion at the Malaysia Start-up Challenge (i-MSC). This compe��on is an annual event organized by Malaysia Digital Economy Corpora�on (MDEC) in collabora�on with the Ministry of Higher Educa�on (MOHE). I-MSC aims to develop entrepreneurial skills, as well as innova�ve ICT ideas of par�cipa�ng students. It also provides a pla�orm that give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills required in order to successfully start up an ICT business by le�ng them solve real world problems for real customers. VoltEdu walked away with a grand prize of RM10,000 in cash prize and trophies in the non-degree category for their mobile applica�on. The message from the team was that their aim is to overcome challenges faced by children and illiterate adults in South-East Asia. Their app is a combina�on of educa�on and volunteerism, providing a pla�orm to contribute towards making a difference through educa�on. The other winners in the degree category was Team Booklyn, who earned themselves a total of RM1000 cash prize and trophies. They were very happy that their efforts were not gone to waste. They truly believed that the compe��on and mentors have helped them understand how they can apply their knowledge to greater good. Priyanka S. A Day at HILTI The field trip to HILTI is an ini�a�ve of the School of Compu�ng & IT to give the students a be�er view on how the industry uses systems such as SAP to be implemented in their En�ty Resource Planning (ERP). A group photo of the students who aended the field trip to HILTI headquarters in Shah Alam On November 17 2016, Taylor’s University School of Compu�ng & IT organized a trip to HILTI (MALAYSIA) for the degree students a�ending ‘Enterprise Compu�ng System’ module. The trip was fully sponsored by the school for the students to gain a be�er understanding of how the top companies are using the SAP system for their Enterprise Resource Planning. SAP stands for System Applica�ons and Products. It is a German mul�na�onal so�ware corpora�on that makes enterprise so�ware to manage business opera�ons and customer rela�ons. SAP is the world biggest enterprise for firm comprehensive so�ware and the third biggest independent so�ware supplier. The field trip lasted from 1pm in the a�ernoon �ll 5pm in the evening. The seminar began by a few key speakers from Hil� giving an introduc�on about their company as soon as the students arrived. Their speakers were very engaged with the students and made the session very interac�ve and interes�ng. Moving on, the speaker introduced the SAP system implemented and used in their company. They explained clearly and in the simplest form for the students to understand. The floor was then open up for ques�ons for the students to clear any of their doubts. The speaker gave very real life examples and explained how HILTI is using the SAP system in their company to support their Enterprise Resource Planning. HILTI is an interna�onal company and is base at Switzerland. However because of the SAP system, every branch located in every country even in Malaysia using the same SAP system is able to collaborate and enhanced the performance of the company to reach their level of success. The students are more familiar with the SAP system because of the session. SAP is one of the top and most used system around the world. Lastly, the students were given a brief tour around the company located in Oasis Square Shah Alam to experience the working environment of the company. As an example, one of the projects showcased by students was a solu�on to predict the rising dengue outbreaks based on several aspects using the latest gadget known as the Raspberry Pi, a credit card-sized computer originally designed for educa�on purposes. Students who have enrolled in Taylor’s University are very much fortunate as they are exposed to the real world’s demands and they get a good feel of what working life would be like for them one day. Since students have come up with a final project that abides by the industrial requirements, they are seen as experienced students and have an advantage when it comes to being employed at a company since this project can be a part of their resume. A project that is being showcased has a big possibility to be chosen by a company, who is sa�sfied with the outcome, to further develop it and in that process; they may hire the students responsible for it, as a part-�me or full-�me employee to work on it so becomes a be�er version. This final year project makes sure that when a student graduates and leaves the university, he or she is fully capable to tackle any kind of task given no ma�er how challenging it may be. It is a good prac�ce for students to have a small glimpse of what to expect later on and helps them build up their confidence and self-esteem. Alumni Profile You might think that’s all, but can you believe Ariff excels in sports as well? He and his team won 1st place for the 2014 Na�onal Dodgeball League! Talk about an achievement. Besides that, he would have been represen�ng Malaysia in dodgeball if he didn’t transfer to the UK. His achievements in sports doesn’t just end in Malaysia, he brought it to UK with him. He won first place for dodgeball in both the 2014 Bristol Charity Games as well as the 2015 Bath Splash Games. An overachieving A+ student, his parents must have been proud of him! Being an alumnus a�er all, Ariff has long since graduated and moved on into the real working industry. But before that, he was an intern at Groupon Malaysia working as a partner specialist for 3 months, tasked to manage merchants in partnership with Groupon Malaysia. Currently, Ariff is working as a Cybersecurity Consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers Malaysia, one of the Big Four accoun�ng firms globally. He specialises in IT Audits, Governance Reviews and Penetra�on Tes�ng. He has had experience working locally and interna�onally with clients ranging from banks, regulatory bodies, statutory bodies and cer�fica�on authori�es. That’s it from Ariff, telling fellow Taylorians, “Always take a step back and understand why you are doing something. Who would have guessed that the simple concept of prime numbers would be an integral part of the RSA encryp�on? Understand the bigger picture and you will appreciate every li�le thing you do.” Did this picture stop you from scrolling? Want to know who he is? Well, his name is Ariff Suffian. Wait, did you want to know more? I could men�on more about him, just a bit more. First of all, Ariff is a Taylor’s alumni from the School of Compu�ng and IT. Awarded a joint scholarship between Taylor’s University and the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, he enrolled in the August 2012 intake for Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) - Computer Security and Forensics and con�nued his degree in September 2014 at UWE. Did I men�on that he managed to snag 4 cer�ficates while s�ll studying in University? He is cer�fied by the EC-Council as an Ethical Hacker, a Hacking Forensic Inves�gator as well as a Security Analyst. Wow indeed. The last cer�fica�on is from the Interna�onal Requirements Engineering board, cer�fying him as a Professional for Requirements Engineering. Ladies and gentlemen, he is on a roll.
