Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) The Scriptures for today are full of hope. That hope, however, is tinged with a warning, as we dis-cover in the preaching of John the Baptist. Our Advent preparation for Christmas invites us to con-sider John the Baptist and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist appears in the tradition of the great prophets of Israel, preaching repentance and reform to the people of Israel. John marks the conversion of those who seek him out with a baptism of repentance. Other groups in this period are thought to have practiced ritual washings for similar purposes, and John's baptism may have been related to the practices of the Essenes, a Jewish sect of the first century. John's baptism can be un-derstood as an anticipation of Christian baptism. In this passage, John himself alludes to the differ-ence between his baptism and the one yet to come: “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance . . . He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” (Matthew 3:11). In this reading, John makes very clear that his relationship to the Messiah yet to come (Jesus) is one of service and subservi-ence: “. . . the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals.” In the context of Matthew's Gospel, today's passage is followed by Jesus' baptism by John, an event that is attested to in all four of the Gospels and appears to have been the start of Jesus' public min-istry. John's preaching of the coming of the Lord is a key theme of the Advent season. As John's message prepared the way for Jesus in the first century, we, too, are called to prepare ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to John's message by our repentance and reform of our lives. We are also called to be prophets of Christ, who announce by our lives, as John did, the coming of the Lord. The Liturgy today paints us a vivid portrait of our new king and the shape of the kingdom He has come to bring. He will rule with justice, saving the poor from the ruthless and wicked. He will be a light, a signal to all nations. Jesus led us to look beyond our differences and ministered to people in many walks of life.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Thursday, December 8th Mass will be celebrated at 8:30am and 6:30pm both in English. Today is the Patronal Feast day of the United States of America. Today’s solemnity celebrates that Mary was conceived without sin in her mother’s womb. She was prepared by God from the very first moment of her life to receive Jesus. Liturgies in honor of Mary always point to the salvation of the whole Church, for she is the supreme symbol of the Church. In the Gospel we hear Mary’s response to the strange and troubling message she received was not impulsive. She pondered it rather than moving brashly forward. Even though there was much she did not understand, she went on faith and trust in God. Paul reminds us that God “chose us in (Jesus), before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.” Several times we hear “he chose us,” “he destined us,” “he blessed us.” Why? God has a plan for each and every one of us and Mary is our example of how we are to respond to God’s call.

Hoy es el día de la fiesta Patronal de los Estados Unidos de América. Celebra la solemnidad de hoy María fue con-cebida sin pecado en el vientre de su madre. Ella fue preparada por Dios desde el primer momento de su vida para recibir a Jesús. La Liturgias en honor de María siempre apuntan a la salvación de toda la iglesia, que es el símbolo supremo de la iglesia. En el Evangelio escuchamos la respuesta de María al extraño y preocupante mensaje que recibió no fue impulsiva. Ella reflexionó que en lu-gar de avanzar impetuosamente. Aunque había mucho que no entendía, ella fue en la fe y confian-za en Dios. Pablo nos recuerda que Dios "nos escogió en (Jesús), antes de la Fundación del mun-do, para ser santos y sin mancha delante de él." Varias veces escuchamos "NOS escogió a noso-tros," "él nos destinó," "él nos bendijo." ¿Por qué? Dios tiene un plan para cada uno de nosotros y María es nuestro ejemplo de cómo podemos responder a la llamada de Dios.

ADVENT: Today is the second Sunday of Advent.

I read this reflection which I would like

to share: “Christmas is, in one respect,

just like any other day. That is, I can

recognize the coming of Christ into my life and into my heart at any moment, on any and every day. Christ's coming wasn't limited to that one single day when “the magic” had to happen. In fact I came to realize that this wasn't about magic at all, but about reality. The true meaning of Christmas is grounded in the profound revelation that God so loves us that he chose to dwell among us both in Bethlehem and today right in our families. I came to see how, in Isaiah's words, “the glo-ry of the Lord shall be revealed” whenever I am willing to prepare the way of the Lord into my life. For me, making a straight path in the wasteland usually has to do with quieting my mind and opening my heart. The gift for the second week of Advent is that God speaks a reassuring word of comfort in the midst of our dis-content and longing. God speaks words of comfort to us today. We can only hear them if we are open to lis-tening. They are not the words of false comfort that everything will somehow turn out for the best. They are words that come to us in the midst of our pain and confusion. They will lead us to an even greater sense of God's presence in our lives and in our families.

ADVIENTO: Hoy es el segundo domingo de Adviento. Leí esta reflexión que me gustaría compartir: "la Navidad es, en un sentido, al igual que cualquier otro día. Es decir, puedo reconocer la venida de Cristo en mi vida y en mi corazón en cualquier momento, en cualquier y cada día. Para mí, hacer un camino recto en la tierra generalmente tiene que ver con aquietar mi mente y abrir mi corazón. El regalo para la se-gunda semana de Adviento es que Dios habla una palabra tranquilizadora de confort en medio de nuestro descontento y anhelo. Dios habla palabras de consuelo a nosotros hoy. Sólo nos podemos oír si estamos abiertos a escuchar. No son las pala-bras de la falsa comodidad que de alguna manera todo saldrá mejor. Son palabras que vienen a noso-tros en medio de nuestro dolor y confusión. Nos conducen a un mayor sentido de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas y en nuestras familias.

Hay sólo dos reuniones de grupo de jóvenes más a la izquierda en el trimestre de otoño! Recuerde: secundaria cumpla con de 5-18:30, High School secundaria se reunirá del 7-20:30, y ambos grupos se reúnen en la sala de adolescentes. Se invita a cualquier estu-diante de secundaria o High School secundaria , así que traiga a un amigo! Nuestra próxima reunión es el 4 de diciembre, y vamos a estar haciendo nuestro mejor para entrar en el espíritu de la temporada! Traer algo de casa que siempre le ayuda a entrar en el espíritu de esta época del año.
