Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal 2017 This weekend is Commitment Weekend for the 2017 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. If you have not already done so please complete your pledge card, indication your gift or pledge to our Catholic Church in Western Oregon. It is important for all of us to participate in order to support our universal church here in Western Oregon.

It is not everyday you meet a hero in your com-munity or family, but one was recognized in the SJB community last Friday, Feb. 10th on the 6 PM news on KATU-TV, Dave Sabin, husband of Tina Sabin and active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was recognized for his out-standing work in collecting and distributing food for St. Vincent de Paul and his volunteer service at the VA hospital where he spends hours with veterans who are dying and have no families to be with them. He and Tina also deco-rate the Ronald MacDonald Homes in Portland at Christmas and bring toys to the children. As well, he is a regular blood donor at the drives here at

Church. He is "retired, but not "retired." To see his interview go to katu.com, click features, then Everyday Heroes. Parishioner, Karen Bouffard, is also in the interview as the person who nominated Dave. It is also posted on our website, www.sjbcatholicchurch.org.

Liturgy Corner: compiled by Pat Raschio (sources Formed, At Home With The Word, Scott Hahn and Loyola Press, Sourcebook) The virtue of holiness for ordinary believers seems unattainable, at least in this life. Today’s scriptures suggest that the people of God can be and should be holy. Jesus asks his followers to take a different approach by resisting retaliation altogether. Those who are called to the Kingdom of Heaven are to go beyond the way the world usually works and serve God’s kingdom here on earth. The other difficult demand of those who are called to the kingdom is to embrace the enemy. Matthew emphasizes that love of God and love of neighbor are the fundamental commands on which all else depend. Because God’s love is unconditional, we are to strive to love as God does, though, of course, it is challenging. Is it even possible? Matthew uses the Greek word telos, which is probably better translated here as “complete.” We are not to be perfect as in doing everything correctly, that is, as in being absolutely morally correct. We are to be perfect as in striving to reach the completeness we are called to in the Kingdom of Heaven. Attempting to love our enemies is part of striving for that completeness. Paul tells the Christians that they are the spiritual temple of God, God dwells in them and they are holy. Today’s Gospel continues Jesus’ teaching on how to interpret the tradition concerning our relation with each other. This teaching is not one of the easier ones to accept, Jesus has a higher standard. As God does, we must love without limit—with a love that does not distinguish between friend and foe, overcoming evil with good. The goal of the disciple is to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.
