FOREWORDDearParentsandStudents,While ithasalwaysbeentheaimof theschool toprovidestudentswithanenvironment inwhichtheycanlearneffectivelyandenthusiastically,wealsoencouragethemtochallengethemselvessothattheycancopewithasuitableamountofpressureandcompetitiveness.Our Year 8 students arenowapproaching theendof their Key Stage3 education. Toprepare fortheirKeystage4,studentshavetoembarkonatwo-yearcourseknownastheInternationalGeneralCertificateofSecondaryEducation(IGCSE),attheendofwhichtheywillsitaseriesofexaminations.Throughoutthenexttwoyears, theyalsohavetocompleteanumberofcourseworkcomponents.Tobesuccessfulinthiscourse,theyhavetoworkconsistentlyhardthroughout.We adopt Cambridge Assessment International Education as our examination board,which is thelargest and themost established IGCSE provider in theworld. In addition, the IGCSE is a subject-specificcurriculum.Thismeansthatstudentshavetochooseanumberofsubjectstostudyindepthfor thenext twoyears.The typesandnumberof subjectsofferedarebasedon the rationale thatstudentsshould followa fairlywideandbalancedcurriculum.Thisphilosophyalso ties inwith theDiploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate, which students will follow after thecompletionoftheirIGCSEcourse.This booklet serves to outline the subjects offered by the school and provide an overview of theexaminationrequirements.Wehopethatyouwillfindthisbookletinformativeand,ifyouhaveanyqueries,pleasecontactoursubjectteachersortheschooladministrators.DrLAUSiu-LingHeadPrincipalPoLeungKukChoiKaiYauSchool

INTRODUCTIONEach student’s IGCSE selection will comprise a number of compulsory subjects, and a range ofelectives(Optionalsubjects).Thereisalsoan“ExtraOption”availableinEnglishLiterature,however,thiswill only be offered to those pupilswhohave shownoutstanding ability in the subject and apassionforreading.Chinese,English,InternationalMathematicsandGlobalPerspectiveswillbeofferedaspartofacoreprogramme and are not optional. However, pupils will be entered for either First Language orSecondLanguageEnglishandChinesebasedontheirleveloflanguageproficiency.Inaddition,pupilsmust choose aminimumof at least one Science subject andone from the Individuals& Societiesfaculty.OptionalSubjectsInaddition toEnglish,Chinese,MathsandGlobalPerspectives,whichmustbe takenbyallpupils,students must indicate their preferred optional subjects in each block of subject choices. Whenchoosingoptionsstudentsareremindedtoobservethefollowingrules:
1. Wherepossible,studentswillbeenteredforthe6subjectstheychooseonthereplyslip.Ifasubject proves to be unavailable then the studentwill automatically be entered for theirback-upoption.
2. StudentsmustchooseatleastoneSciencefromBiology,ChemistryandPhysics.3. Studentsmust choose at least one subject from Business Studies, Economics, Geography
andHistory.4. PupilsshouldnotchoosebothBusinessStudiesandEconomics5. For linguistically able students, they may be offered English Literature. Students cannot
choosetotakethisoptions;however,theyshouldindicatewhethertheywouldacceptitifitwereoffered.
6. Parentsandstudentsshouldnotethatthefinalchoiceofthesubjectshastomeetwiththeapprovaloftheschool.Wherepossible,studentsshouldachieveatleastanMgradeintheiroverall academic achievement in each subject they have chosen. When making the finaldecision,theschoolwilltakeintoconsiderationthestudent’sabilityandattitude.
7. Subjectsmaynotruniftheyonlyattractasmallnumberofstudents,inwhichcasewewilltakethestudents’back-upchoice.

ChangingSubjectsItisnormalforstudentstobeunsureaboutsomesubjects,particularlythosetheyhavenotstudiedbefore.Assuch, it ispossibletorequestachangetoyoursubjectchoicesaftertheformhasbeensubmitted.Anyrequestmusttaketheformofaletteroutliningthereasonsfortheproposedchangesignedbytheparent/guardian.ThisshouldbehandedtotheIGCSECoordinatorassoonaspossible.However,pleasebear inmindthatsomesubjectsmaybecomefull,andchanging intoaclassmaynotbepossible.AftertheendofSeptemberstudentswillnolongerbeabletochangeintoasubject,however,ifastudentisreallystrugglingwithasubjecttherewillbeopportunitiestodropsubjectslaterinthecourse.ExaminationFeesThetotalcostofastudent’sIGCSEexaminationswillvarydependingonthenumberofsubjectstheytakeandtheexchangerateatthetimeofpayment.

IGCSE&IBDPAftercompletingtheirIGCSEsstudentswillcompletethefinalstageoftheireducationwithCKY;theInternational Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP). For those wishing to go on to tertiaryeducationinHongKongorabroad,itisimportanttheymaketherightchoicesfortheirIBDP.At IBDP students are asked to take six subjects: three atHigher Level (HL) and three at StandardLevel(SL).ForprogressiontoIBDiploma,studentsareexpectedtoattainaminimumof3Bsand3CsintheirIGCSEswithadditionalrequirementsstatedbelow:
i. aminimumofgradeBinIGCSEforallHigherLevelsubjects,exceptMathematics;ii. aminimumofGradeAinIGCSEMathematicsforHigherLevelMathematics.iii. aminimumofgradeCinIGCSEforallStandardLevelsubjects;

FIRSTLANGUAGEENGLISH(0500)Although English is a compulsory subject at CKY, there are differences in the courses offered,dependingoneachpupil’s competency in English. Studentswill beentered intoeitherCambridgeFirstLanguageEnglishIGCSE(Syllabuscode0500)orCambridgeEnglishAsASecondLanguageIGCSE(0510), based on their progress in the subject throughout years 6-8. Those students who areconfident in their useof the English languagewill be entered for First Language andmay alsobeofferedtheoptiontoenterforEnglishLiteratureIGCSE(seepage11).Allotherpupilswillbeenteredfor the Second Language exam. Both First and Second Language students will also complete aSpeakingandListeningcomponent,whichisseparatelyendorsed.IfyouwouldliketoknowwhichIGCSEyouare likelytobeenteredfor,pleaseconsultyourEnglishteacher.FirstLanguageEnglishIGCSE(0500)The First Language Syllabus is assessed on threecomponents:

Students selected for the English First Language IGCSEareexpectedtoshowconsistentcompetencyintheiruseofEnglishineachofthethreemaincomponents.TheSyllabuswilldevelopstudents’abilitytocommunicateaccurately,appropriatelyandeffectivelyin speechandwriting. ENGLISHASASECONDLANGUAGE(0510)EnglishasaSecondLanguageIGCSE(0510)TheCambridgeEnglishSecondLanguageSyllabusisintendedforstudentswhoarestudyingEnglishinorder topromote theireducationaloremploymentprospects. ENGLISHLITERATURE(0486)AtCKYwewillofferCambridgeEnglishLiterature(0486)asanextraoption,inthatitisintendedonlyforhighabilitycandidateswhoarelikelytoachieveGradeA*toBintheIGCSEEnglishFirstLanguageexamination.CandidatesofferedtoenterforEnglishLiteratureareexpectedtocompleteboththeFirstLanguageandLiteraturesyllabiinthesameamountoftimenormallyaffordedasinglesubject.However,EnglishLiteratureshouldnotreplaceanotheroptionalsubject.Assessment:TheEnglishLiteratureIGCSE(0486)comprises75%examinationand25%coursework.Studentswillsittwoexaminations,whichlastfor1hourand30minutes(poetryandprosetexts)and45minutes(dramatext).Studentswillbegivenachoiceoftwoquestionsforeachtext.Therewillbeapassagebasedandessaystylequestion.Studentswillbeexpectedtoknowthetextsextremelywellandbeabletoexpresstheirownopinionsaboutthem.Thereare2piecesofcourseworkthatmustbecompleted,oneofwhichwillbebasedononeofthesettexts.Theotherpiecewillbebasedonanotherpieceofliteraturethatstudentswillstudy.Thatisnot tosay that studentswillonlycomplete twopieces. FIRSTLANGUAGECHINESE(0509)Aims:TheCambridgeFirstLanguageChineseIGCSESyllabus(0509)isdesignedforcandidateswhosemother tongue is Chinese. Cambridge IGCSE First Language qualifications are accepted byuniversitiesandemployersasproofofknowledgeandunderstandingofalanguage.Theaimsofthecourseare:

INTERNATIONALMATHEMATICS(0607)ThisyearwefollowtheCambridgeIGCSEInternationalMathematicsSyllabus(0607).
The introductionof Cambridge IGCSE InternationalMathematics offers schoolsevenmorechoicewhenitcomestoselectingamathematicscoursethatisrightfor their students. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics has beendesignedforinternationalschoolsthatwanttheirmathematicsteachingtofocusmore on investigations and modeling, and which better utilizes the powerfultechnologyofgraphicalcalculators.Thecourseintegrateswellwiththeapproachtoteachingofmathematics in IBschools.Thecourse isdivided intoacoretier,and an extended tier. The syllabus also introduces students to the history ofmathematicsanditsculturalsignificance.

BIOLOGY(0610)Content:AtCKYweofferourstudentsachoiceofSciencecurriculafromBiology(0610),Chemistry(0620)andPhysics(0625).Sciencehas longbeenviewedasan integralpartof thecurriculum ineducation, soevery studentmust take at least one Science subject at IGCSE. CHEMISTRY(0620)Content:CambridgeIGCSEChemistryisacceptedbyuniversitiesandemployersasproofofessentialchemistryknowledgeandability.Aswellasasubjectfocus,thechemistrysyllabusenablesstudentsto:

FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONSHowmanyoptionalsubjectsshouldItake?Every student is different and there is no guideline number set by Cambridge International. Ourtimetable currently permits a maximum of 10 IGCSEs, which may rise to 11 including EnglishLiterature. However, those studentswho enjoy only a few subjects but find some other subjectschallenging,canconsidertakingfeweroptionalsubjects. Ifthisisthecase,pleasetalktotheIGCSECoordinator.Those students selected to take English Literature are able to decline it, if they feel that theworkloadwillbetoogreat.However,weurgethesestudentsnottoreducetheirnumberofoptionalsubjectsasthismayhindertheirfuturechoices.HowdoIfindoutmoreaboutwhatthecoursesconsistof?Read this booklet carefully, as even familiar subjects can be very different at IGCSE.
