TITLE, NAME TITLE OF LECTURE

Themes of the DayMajor aspects of Earth Sciences that are particularly relevant for society today will be highlighted during the 33rd IGC. More than 80 internationally leading experts will contribute to the programme for these seven “Themes of the Day”. They are all related to the priorities of the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE). In parallel with the Congress symposia programme, we will highlight one of these major themes each day.

The themes include Early life and evolution; Climate change; Geohazards; Water, health, and environment; Mineral resources; Energy resources and the future; and Planetary geoscience. The programme focuses on both scientifi c and societal aspects of each theme. Speakers for the lunchtime key-note “StatoilHydro lectures” are Richard Fortey, Gerald Haug, Herbert Einstein, Ghislain deMarsily, Neil Williams, Mark Moody Stuart, and Maria Zuber. Each day will have lectures demonstrating the state-of-the-art science, as well as the societal aspects of each theme, and will end with a panel debate.

A congress cannot solve major problems, but does provide a forum for exposing them and providing recommendations for their solution. We therefore want as many scientists from different fi elds and others as possible to attend the congress. We will also underline that it is possible to attend the congress on a one day registration. Tickets which give access to the Theme of the Day only, are sold on-site at the price of NOK 200 per day. One-day full registration with access to the entire Congress are sold on-site at the price of 150 Euro. Please visit our website www.33igc.org for more information.
