Bavaria’s provincial capital was once again the host of a World Cup season final worth watching last weekend: 8.000 spectators and a thrilling competition ensured a heated atmosphere at the Olympic Stadium. Two big decisions of this climbing weekend were already made beforehand: reigning world champion Dmitrii Sharafutdinov had already guaranteed the first overall World Cup victory of his career with his win of the second last comp in Colorado at the beginning of June. The stage victory allowed a new face to make his premiere on the podium: Japanese climber Rei Sugimoto attained his first World Cup medal ever with three tops and a win in Munich. Silver and bronze went to local hero Thomas Tauporn and newlywed Rustam Gelmanov. Jakob Schubert, second of the IFSC Overall World Cup 2013, finishes up in 10th place. In the women’s overall World Cup, the die had also already been cast: Bouldering queen Anna Stöhr (AUT) celebrates her fourth Boulder Overall World Cup win after 2008, ’11 and ‘12 – with unbelievable seven wins out of eight competitions this year! US-girl Alex Puccio fixes her third place in the Boulder Overall World Cup 2013 with silver in Munich as Britain’s Shauna Coxsey ends up with bronze at the final event. Anna Stöhr: “It was such a pleasure climbing here In Munich – the audience was just amazing and I think we all enjoyed a worthy conclusion of a great World Cup season! I’m very happy about this final and now I’m really looking forward to Eindhoven.” The next season highlight for the best Bouldering athletes will be the European Championships in Eindhoven (NL), coming up from August 31st to September 1st.
