MET cycle challenge

Chris Goodfellow (MET) and three other Cantabs are currently half way through a charity cycle adventure from Nordkapp, Norway, to Punta de Tarifa, Spain, in an attempt to travel from the northernmost to the southernmost points in mainland Europe.

The team will be cycling approximately 3,500miles (5600km) between them.

They are completing the challenge to raise money for Help for Heroes and Cambridge’s own Jimmies Night Shelter.

All of the information about the trip can be found in the links below including their Virgin Money Giving web page.

1 million frames per secondThe Inkjet Research Centre (IRC)was recently successful with a bid to house a 1 million frames per second Shimadzu HPV-1 camera and light source on permanent loan from the EPSRC EIP (Engineering Instrument Pool). The competition for such equipment was high, and in the first instance the EIP equipment will be

utilised by several groups working within the IRC labs during the rest of the year. Our UROP students Will Price and Claudio Ravasio will also have the opportunity to utilise the Shimadzu during their project work, assisted by Ching Chen. Will Price is working on drop volume imaging and analysis, supervised by Graham Martin. Claudio Ravasio, sponsored by Xaar and supervised by Steve Hoath, is studying aspects of inkjet print head refill behaviour after jetting.

Towards lean and resilient productionAlena Puchkova (DIAL) presented a paper titled ‘Towards Lean and Resilient Production’ at the Symposium on Information Control in Manufacturing (INCOM 2015) in Ottawa, Canada, May 11-13.

The paper presents issues and trade-offs in attempting to achieve lean production by increasing productivity and reducing costs and waste while at the same time operating with resilience in the face of disruptions. A simple mathematical model of the operation of a production system is proposed, which incorporates two types of disruptive events: resource breakdowns and quality loss.

The model is used to evaluate different inventory and inspection options for managing disruptions. It

is expected that the outputs from this work will lead to industrial guidelines for planning a production system configuration, such as number and location of inspection stations, and size and location of buffers.

The co-authors of the paper are Rengarajan Srinivasan, Duncan McFarlane and Alan Thorne. The work is based on the research carried out during the DisTAL (Disruption Tolerant Automated Lean Factories) project funded by the Boeing company.

Former MET filmed at the IfM

Keno Mario-Ghai, who graduated MET last year, was filmed at the IfM for a television programme to go out on the Discovery Channel next year.

Provisionally entitled ‘Meet the Superbrains’, the programme is following a group of people working in new areas of science and technology, including the University of Cambridge team competing in this year’s Bridgestone World Solar Challenge – a biennial solar car race across nearly 2,000 miles of Australian Outback.

Keno led the 60-strong Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) team that designed and built Resolution, the only British car to qualify for the competition in 2013. As team manager, he had to take a painful, eleventh-hour decision not to race as there were concerns over the safety of the vehicle. Keno has since remained close to the project, both as an advisor to this year’s Cambridge team and as an official Ambassador for the Challenge.

Keno is currently working for Imagination Technologies.

Jonathan Waite wins Leete Premium award

PhD student Jonny Waite (IRC)attended the awards dinner of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. The dinner was held in the fabulous Drapers’ Hall, London and many awards were presented to engineering researchers and engineers in the Armed Forces. Jonny received the Leete Premium Award, which is for research in production engineering at the IfM and provides a substantial bursary over the three years of a PhD. The working title of his PhD is ‘Robocasting with Integrated Fusion’ and looks to combine laser melting with slurry extrusion to create a new method of 3D printing. If successful, this method could enable faster production of ceramic components and production of parts containing different materials, such as a ceramic and a metal, in one automated process.

Ironman Tim

To the surprise of many (including me) I did manage to complete the Grafman ‘Ironman 70.3’ distance triathlon at the end of last month and, thanks to generous support from so many of you, raised just over £2000 (including GiftAid) for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Cancer Research UK. Many thanks for all your contributions - the two charities are really grateful for your support.

For any of you who were waiting to see if I could actually complete the task before donating - quite understandable, as I had major doubts myself (but photo evidence above) - the donation website will remain open for a little longer - https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/tim-minshall - Tim Minshall
