A Winning Night By Ed Wanner Steven Whittenburge nailed a 4-foot jump shot with less than 20 seconds remaining to seal the win as the Client Tells edged the Staff Infections, 60-59, in Mid-Valley’s inaugural March Madness game. A standing room only crowd enjoyed an entertaining evening that opened with Sarah Doetsch singing the National Anthem. The game was played at Sue Buell Elementary School on March 23 and was a fund raiser for the local YCAP food bank.

The Infections jumped to an early advantage and led by as much as 8 before Louie Selleck headed a Tells rally. When the game entered the wheelchair portion, Asha Soiney and Josh Webber scored at will, giving the Tells a comfortable advantage at the half. Halftime opened with entertaining dance choreography under the direction of Michelle Fernandez and concluded with an open dance floor to the live music of The Vintage Knights. Smiles from both the audience and participants filled the gym. Infections’ coach, Jeff Hanes, had no answer for derailing the

Tells as the Clients built a 22-point advantage in the 3rd quarter. But Clients’ coach, Pieter Schoonveld, was soon scrambling when the Infections mounted a fierce rally and closed to within 8 (47-39) at the end of the period. In the final quarter, the Infections’ rally continued until they seized a 59-58 advantage within the last minute of play. Following a timeout, Whittenburge hit the game winner to the delight of the crowd. What a great night! Can’t wait until next year!

Welcome

Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc Page 4

Welcome Adam Akana! Adam moved to Newberg from the Eugene area and began working with Mid-Valley in January. Adam now holds a

record 6 different jobs! He is a janitor at Miller Technologies, First Baptist Church and Habitat for Humanity Restore. Adam also completes the weekly safety inspections for the Individual Placement vehicles, works on the Downtown Litter Patrol and cleans on another Mid-Valley contract job in the community. In his free time Adam loves movies and has written and directed a few of his own short films. Adam, we are glad to have you here!

Shanita Odenweller has joined the PM session at McMinnville CIS. She has brought a lot of great ideas and energy to the group. She is very involved with Special Olympics and competes in bowling and track. In her spare time she enjoys going to the movies and loves Starbucks. Welcome Shanita!

Virgil Henry is enjoying semi-retirement. He recently transferred from Wood Products to join the PM session at McMinnville CIS and also is working at Industrial Services part of the week. Virgil enjoys bowling and playing cards. In fact, his peers all think he is a “card shark” because he ALWAYS wins!

The Individual Placement department has a new part-time Employment Specialist in Polk and Marion County. Julie Schnell lives in

Salem with her husband and 5 children (4 boys and 1 girl) from 4 to 16 years of age. The family is also hosting a foreign exchange student from Peru. Julie’s family pets consist of 2 gold fish. Julie and her family have lived in Salem for 13 years. She grew up and went to college in California graduating in psychology. She lived in France for 18 months as part of a church mission, then moved to Salt Lake for a period of time and then moved to Salem because they “just love it “. Julie said this job “feels good and fits in every way”. What she likes best are the people. The other part of the job Julie says she likes is the variety. Not only does she assist people with finding and maintaining employment, she is also a backup supervisor for our enclaves in Polk County. She is a great fit for the team and we are glad to have her. So when you see Julie out and about be sure to welcome her on board!

Welcome Cari! Industrial Services is proud to welcome our newest Floor Supervisor, Cari Hanes! She has a great “go get ‘em” approach and accomplishes all the tasks thrown at her. She continues to have a positive attitude and great interactions with everyone at IS. Hooray for Cari! Glad to have you on board, now get back to work!

The Janitorial Enclave is very pleased to have Alex Brown as the newest member of the crew!

Alex started earlier in April and works three nights a week. He reports that he is a night owl which makes this shift a natural fit for him. Alex recently graduated from McMinnville High School, this is his first job and he is off to a great start. He learns quickly, listens well, asks questions, is quiet but well-spoken and he shows kindness to everyone on the crew. We are lucky to have him as part of our team and look forward to getting to know him better. Thanks Alex and welcome aboard.

Please Help Throughout last fiscal year and the upcoming fiscal year, Mid-Valley has been forced to make some tough choices. Unfortu-nately we have had to cut some of our programs and services since the State of Oregon has cut some of our client’s funding. In this issue, Mid-Valley has enclosed an envelope to those who wish to donate to our programs and services. We have a General Fund as well as the Special Needs Fund and the Margaret Reavis-Larsen Memorial Scholarship Fund. If you would like to donate to any of these funds, please indicate on your check memo which fund you wish to donate. For those of you who receive this newsletter by email, if you would like to donate please send your donations in to: Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc 16700 S. Hwy 99W Amity, OR 97101 Thank you so much for all of your support to Mid-Valley Rehabilitation, Inc.

Thank you as always to those of you who have given to the Mid-Valley Rehabilitation Special Needs Fund. These funds go directly to the clients we have identified as needing financial assistance for specific health related purposes, people whose needs are not otherwise covered through either private insurance or Medicare/Medicaid. Currently we are working with a man who has Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare disorder that is characterized by cranial deformities which can include small malformed jaws, ear abnormalities, eye problem, cleft palate and airway problems. To

date he has had two dentist appointments, at last one he had two teeth extracted. Eventually all of his teeth will be pulled as part of his treatment plan. He has also been referred to a Prosthondontist who will construct a specialized dental prosthetic for his dentures which will create a block or plug in the space between his nasal and oral cavities resulting from his cleft palate. At this time we have no idea what the cost is going to be, the plan is still coming together. However we can expect that due to the extent of the work being done, we will be using a

considerable amount of money from the Special Needs Fund. If you wish to help us raise money for this purpose and others you can do so by spreading the word and/or mailing a check to the Mid-Valley Rehabilitation Inc Charitable Funds/Special Needs. Mid-Valley is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization serving 215 individuals with disabilities in employment, residential and community inclusion services. All donations are tax deductible and will go directly toward helping the individual.

Good Bye and Good Luck~ Sadly, Industrial Services had to say, “Best of Luck on your new adventure”, to Bob Cave this month. Since his move to Salem over a year ago, he has had quite a commute to/from McMinnville. Luckily, he was able to get a job closer to home where he can meet new friends and spread his cheery smile. He was with Mid-Valley 1 month shy

of 24 years! You are a great friend and will be missed by everyone here, but we wish you the best on your new job! See you around Buddy!

Matt Grawl got his BLACK BELT in Taekwondo! He took the test for his promotion on the 3rd of March, it was 3 ½ hours long. The test included 9 Hyungs’ (sequenced movements) breaking 4 boards with his foot and sparring with 4 different opponents. Matt has been training for this belt rank for over 8 months. He became involved in Taekwondo because when his mother was flipping through a Community Center class schedule, she asked Matt if he would like to try it and he said yes because he was bored. That was three years ago.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. Loosely translates it means "the art of the foot and fist" or "the art of kicking and punching." Students learn techniques and forms called Hyungs’ which are a series of defending and attacking movements performed in a specific pattern. They can have anywhere between 19 to 72 movements in a sequence. Students move up in rank by testing before a Grandmaster. The test is based on their demonstration of knowledge and execution of techniques. Rank is signified by the color of belt the student wears. In addition to teaching self-defense Taekwondo also promotes the development of coordination, balance, memory and rhythm. Matt tells me this has been true in his life. He describes greater coordination that is not limited to his body. He tells me “it’s helped me talk to people face to face and with my coordination.

It helps me get my words out sometimes”. When I asked him if he was nervous about taking the test, he indicated he wasn’t concerned about his performance and said “I was worried about getting my words out, but when the time came they came out.” What’s next for Matt? Well, it turns out that black belts are not the end of the line, Matts goal is to become a 4th degree black belt. He estimates this will take him about 4 years. He has to pass his 2nd and 3rd degree belt ranks first. I wonder how long those tests will take. I’m exhausted even thinking about it.

Matt Grawl Receives his Black Belt!

Good Bye and Good Luck...
