The source and summit of our actions! In a catchy phrase, that is what Vatican II called the Eucharist over 45 years ago and Catholics have been trying to live that out in our liturgical practice ever since. At Duke, we have made our Sunday Eucharist a special focus, with the challenge that all of our ministries should flow from and back to our Sunday celebration. Doing that on a college campus, especially on one where we do not have a Sunday worship space of our own, is a unique challenge. But if you provide it, they will come! This summer the Duke Catholic Center decided to continue offering Sunday night Mass at 9pm every Sunday in Duke Chapel. In the past, when the undergraduates were not in session, Mass was not offered on campus due to smaller numbers. With more and more graduate and professional students calling Durham home, and with increasing numbers of undergrads engaged in athletics and other programming that keeps them on campus during the summer and winter breaks, the DCC was pleased with the last twelve months in which Mass was offered every Sunday night. During the “off season,” we averaged over 100 students attending the late evening liturgy, and the last Sunday night of the summer brought some special guests.

Coach David Cutcliffe brought his entire football team and staff to Mass on August 21, as they continued their training camp in preparation for the season. The addition of 105 players, plus coaches and staff doubled our usual summer crowd, and offered the DCC the opportunity to reach out to our student athletes. Coach Cut offered a reflection after communion on the role that faith plays in his life (he is Catholic) as well as how it has impacted his athletic pursuits. We were blessed to welcome them! The good Mass news continues with a change of venue beginning this fall. After a number of months of negotiation with University officials, we have been able to move our 11am Sunday morning Mass from its previous location in a lecture hall on East campus, to Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School on West campus. —Father Mike

I was with Bishop Burbidge the other day, and I mentioned to him how much I know he would enjoy coming to campus on Wednesday nights. To sit and pray with us from 8-9pm during our Eucharistic Adoration and then to help me hear confessions from 9-10pm, may not sound like a relaxing evening, but I know he would find it renewing. To pray with young people and then to listen as they pour out their lives in confession is edifying. That there are young people who take their faith lives seriously and want to grow closer to Christ is so affirming and I am sure that the Bishop, whose days are filled with much important administration, would be renewed in faith by the encounter. At least I have. That is my deepest reflection after just one year at the Duke Catholic Center—imagine what that will be like after many! My first year at Duke is in the books, and what a year it was! As much as I thought I knew, there is nothing like experience to teach me all that I needed to know not just about the position and the Center, but more importantly, about the students. The opportunity to get to know our students has been life changing and faith affirming. At times, it has felt like carrying a cat by the tail, but all in all it has confirmed for me the important role that

the Catholic Center plays in the life of students here at Duke as well as in the life of the University as a whole. The coming year’s experiences will do the same I am sure! As our Annual Report in this issue attests, we have been blessed in what we have been able to accomplish. While numbers never paint the entire picture, they can give some indicators about any organization and that is why we share them with you, our alumni, parents and friends. We want you to realize what we are doing and how we are growing spiritually, all of which because Christ has called us, and you have supported us. I cannot thank you enough on behalf of all of the Catholic students at Duke for the way in which your support has empowered us to celebrate our faith and learn from the experience. What the numbers don’t reflect, but what my experience has taught me is that those on the giving end and those on the receiving end are both enriched when we give and receive in a spirit which desires to see the Body of Christ grow. Know that you share in the joy of that growth and may that experience teach you something that you could have learned in no other way!

The Duke Catholic Center is pleased to welcome Emma Miller as our tenth Peer Ministry Coordinator for the 2011-2012 academic year. Emma graduated from Duke in May 2011 with a degree in Psychology. While at Duke, she held a number of different leadership positions within the Duke Catholic Center, volunteered at the Emily Krzyzewski Center with the Crazies Who Care, and lived several months in a tent in K-Ville. She is from Salisbury, N.C., and loves running, traveling, and Latin dancing. Emma remembers the encouragement and support she received from the Peer Ministry Coordinator of her freshman year, David Walker BSE ’07. “Dave had a way of always making you feel welcome, and my goal as PMC is to make sure all Catholic students at Duke feel that same sense of welcome and community. Our shared faith and tradition has such great capacity for building truly lasting relationships, and I’m excited to be a part of this ministry that tries to provide those relationships to all Catholics at Duke.”

Welcome! Duke Catholic Center Welcomes New Peer Ministry Coordinator

When you hear the stereotype of a Catholic family from Boston, an image of seven kids running around an Irish household comes to mind. John and Kristine DeMatteo fit the bill, except they just aren’t Irish! The DeMatteo’s children range in age from an oldest son beginning college to the youngest in pre-K, and still they are not too busy to think about the well being of others, in particular, the importance of the Duke Catholic Center (DCC). The DeMatteo family is the

primary financial supporter for the Peer Ministry Coordinator position at the DCC.

John graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1986 and has gone on to a successful career as President of Park Square Realty in Boston, MA, and his wife Kristine Gonzalez DeMatteo graduated from Trinity in ’87 whose life is full as a stay-at-home mom. The Catholic faith is important to the DeMatteo’s who, amongst other charitable endeavors, sought to support the PMC position in Fall 2011. The Peer Ministry Coordinator is a recent Duke graduate who lives in the Falcone Arena House, and works for a year managing the work of the student directors at the Catholic Center. Emma Miller T ’11 will fill the role this year (see below).

“It is important to us to know that there is a place at Duke that is caring for the spiritual well being of students,” John notes. “We have been blessed and we are happy to share God’s blessings with others at Duke.” Even though the DeMatteo’s oldest is off to Notre Dame, they are hopeful that one of their children will follow in their parents’ footsteps at Duke, and as a result of their support, there will be a strong Catholic presence on campus to nurture their spiritual life.

The Duke Catholic Center has been planning for a new way to prepare students for Confirmation this year. We have invited a group of students who have been confirmed to meet with two catechists and mentors to learn more about Confirmation and our Catholic faith. These students have excitedly, and a little nervously, agreed to learn what they need to so that they can, in turn, walk with and help prepare students who come forward asking to be prepared for the Sacrament. Both the student catechists as well as the Confirmation candidates will always have access to both mentors for questions and help.

It is an incredibly exciting and humbling process to walk with people as they learn and grow in preparation of receiving any Sacrament. It is comforting that God always accompanies us in this task. He not only inspires the love and care in us but His own love and care for both catechist and candidate are beyond our imaginings.

We have already had thirteen students come forward willing to be prepared as Confirmation catechists. Campus Minister, Catherine Preston, and Economics professor, Peter Arcidiacono, have been corresponding with and begun working with some students who were on campus over the summer. Please keep us in your prayers!

Michael and Marybeth Morsberger are making a difference for future Duke students through a long-term gift by remembering the Duke Catholic Center (DCC) in their wills. Michael and Marybeth feel more assured of the future by their decision to leave a bequest to the DCC. Mike worked at Duke Medicine for four years and became acquainted with Duke Catholic through weekly Masses. Later, he and his wife Marybeth celebrated the occasion of their 20th anniversary at the DCC with the recitation of their wedding vows. We hope you will share in the Morsberger’s enthusiasm for this legacy.

What motivated you to include the Duke Catholic Center in your will?We are a young family and we do not plan on dying anytime soon! However, why not formally acknowledge those charitable organizations that have touched our lives? It was fulfilling to reflect on our legacy in this way. Obviously, our kids came first in our will, but tithing a percentage of our estate just seemed natural to us. In updating our wills, we reflected on all the organizations/ non-profits that have shaped our lives and brought us joy. The Duke Catholic Center is among them. It is a special place with an important mission. We have been modest annual supporters for years.

Can you describe the process you went through to include the Duke Catholic Center in your will?It was easy, really. We simply included a charitable residual clause in our will for a percentage of our assets to be distributed to a handful of non-profit organizations in which we believe. We met with our attorney—signed, done!

Each day, approximately 3,000 students board Duke University’s transit buses to get around Duke and the surrounding area.

This year, the Duke Catholic Center has embarked on a new initiative to enhance its outreach to Catholic students at Duke University. Beginning in September, the DCC has placed advertisements (shown at right) on the buses listing the schedule for Sunday Mass, Eucharistic Adoration and Confession. The ads will be erected in each of the University’s 20 buses and will appear during the months of September, November and February.

“The bus ads are a great way for the Catholic Center to be a bit more visible to students in an everyday setting. When I was a student, I learned about the Marine Lab and current Nasher Museum exhibits just by riding the bus!” said Emma Miller, T’11 and current Peer Ministry Coordinator.
