TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When the custom of the stational liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twentieth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the stational church

of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem. The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the

grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Constantine. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious

institutions of Rome collapsed and the church was abandoned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgotten treasure. In 1492 repairmen took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscription “Title of the Cross,” and within, an ancient wooden

tablet on which was carved the inscription dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authentic, although its discovery was enough to give the church great prestige among pilgrims. The veneration of the relic of the cross located here was a

THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE

As children we sang the lively song This Little Light of Mine. The words, of course, are based on today’s Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are

uninhibited about sharing their faith. It’s only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light un-der a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week’s readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the

light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something,

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La primera santa americana fue Rosa de Lima, peruana de nacimiento. Murió en 1617 y fue

canonizada en 1671, diez años después de la primera fundación inglesa en lo que hoy son Estados Unidos de América. Esta santa americana es acompañada por otros santos como san Felipe de

Jesús (mexicano) canonizado en 1862 y Madre Francisca Cabrini (italoestadounidense y la primera santa de EE. UU.) canonizada en 1946. Oficialmente hay 60 santos y 77 beatos que nacieron o trabajaron en América. La mayoría de estos son 50 mexicanos, 33 brasileños, 12 canadienses,

nueve estadounidenses, ocho colombianos, siete peruanos, tres argentinos y tres chilenos. Guatemala, Cuba, República Dominicana, Uruguay y Venezuela tienen un santo(a) cada uno.

Estados Unidos y Canadá comparten siete mártires. La mayoría de los santos o santas del continente americano fueron beatificados o canonizados durante los últimos 100 años. Sólo ocho de

ellos fueron canonizados durante los últimos ocho años. No todos estos santos nacieron en América, pero sí dedicaron su vida a evangelizarla. Estos 137 santos de la Iglesia universal son un

MI PEQUEÑA LUZ

Cuando éramos niños cantábamos efusivamente la canción Mi pequeña luz (This Little Light of Mine). La letra de la canción, desde luego, está basada en el Evangelio de hoy, en este estamos

llamados como discípulos a ser la sal y la luz del mundo. Los niños no tienen dificultad para compartir su fe; solo es cuando crecemos que preferimos esconder nuestra luz bajo un tazón porque nuestra cultura tiende a no enfatizar el discipulado. El mensaje en las lecturas de esta

semana es claro: para poder dar gloria a Dios por medio del discipulado, debemos mostrar la luz de Cristo en nuestras palabras y obras. No es algo fácil para adultos inhibidos. A menudo podemos

pensar en la sal y la luz en términos de lo que hacemos por los demás, pero puede ser tan importante como el no hacer nada, ya sea como enojarse con un desconocido en la carretera o

ATRIUM HEALTH VISITOR POLICY REVISED DUE TO FLU

Effective at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 8, Atrium Health is restricting visitors age 12 and under at all Charlotte region inpatient hospitals

due to the growing prevalence of flu cases.

Also, Atrium Health is asking visitors of all ages who are experiencing flu-like symptoms to help control the spread of the illness by not visiting

patients in the hospital. Any visitors with flu-like symptoms who must visit due to extenuating circumstances (such as imminent death of a family member, ect.) will be asked to wear a surgical mask while in patient care areas to

protect themselves and others.

Flu-like symptoms include fever, headaches, body aches/pain, cough or sore throat, stuffy or

runny nose, chills, fatigue, nausea, and or diarrhea.
