If 57 million is the answer,

what is the question?

Every day, children all over the world are going to school and enjoying their right to an education.

Yet 57 million children, for many different reasons, are missing out.

And for many who do go to school, it is not a place where they feel safe or have the facilities needed for a good education.

Why are some children not able to go to school?

• distance to travel

• poverty

• being a girl

• because it’s not safe

• extreme weather

Some children have to go to work instead of school because:

•people accept it.•children’s rights are not respected.•governments do not provide compulsory, free and accessible education.•governments don’t follow the UNCRC. •the education system is expensive.•consumers worldwide demand cheap products.

We have not done enough to stop it.

Why are some children not able to enjoy a good quality education?

Not enough classrooms or equipment.

Not enough trained teachers.

Some schools don’t have drinking water or proper toilets.

Some children can’t get food to eat at school.

These are some of the things that UNICEF are doing to try

and help.

…. providing safe places to learn

by providing tents andequipment for temporary schools,

for example, after the cyclone in Madagascar and the earthquake in Haiti.

…. helping children to get back to school in emergency situations

…. providing books, pencils and pens and other resources

….helping to train teachers

so they teach effectively, treat children fairly, and make learning fun.

….providing clean water, toilets and a clean, safe environment
