IETF84 update for GISFI-10, New Delhi 2

Main CCNS Topics in IETF84

• NVO3 (Network Virtualization Overlays) – Support for multi-tenancy has become a core requirement of data centers (DCs), especially in the

context of data centers supporting virtualized hosts known as virtual machines (VMs)– NVO3 WG will investigate the interconnection of the DC VPNs and their tenants with non-NVO3 IP

network(s) to determine if any specific work is needed – Website: http://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/nvo3/charter/

• SDN RG (Software Defined Networking Research Group) – SDNRG provides a forum for researchers to investigate key and interesting problems

in the Software Defined Networking field. It investigates SDN from various perspectives with the goal of identifying the approaches that can be defined, deployed and used in the near term as well identifying future research challenges

– Key areas of interest include solution scalability, abstractions, and programming languages and paradigms particularly useful in the context of SDN

– Website: http://trac.tools.ietf.org/group/irtf/trac/wiki/sdnrg • SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management)

– SCIM working group will standardize methods for creating, reading, searching, modifying, and deleting user identities and identity-related objects across administrative domains, with the goal of simplifying common tasks related to user identity management in services and applications

• Main contributions and discussion are in the following areas– Framework, Requirements, Operations, Overlays, VMMI,

MatrixDCN, packet compression solution for Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV) technology, PSN Independent Overlay Network(PION), Security framework, etc.

• Current active discussion points can be found at:– http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/nvo3/current/maillist.html

• IETF84 NVO3 mtg. notes can be found at: – https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/84/materials.html (see under “ NVO3“)

IETF84 update for GISFI-10, New Delhi 4Monday-10-September-2012

• Key highlights of NVO3– Current foci of NVO3 are requirements and framework drafts– Virtual machine (VM) mobility, data plane, control plane, and

security framework drafts also needs to be revised and updated– Too many drafts are there and we need some convergence

• Next steps for NVO3 – Update the Framework, Requirements, VM mobility and

Interconnection, and Cloud Access/Services drafts– Interim face-to-face mtg in Westford, MA, USA on 20

Sept.2012• http://

IETF84 update for GISFI-10, New Delhi 5Monday-10-September-2012

• Too many Definitions for SDN … Needs some converge…

• In SDN, just Opening the interface between the Controller and Forwarding planes is not enough– It is also Required to develop deployable new applications that can run on top of SDN, including

dynamic access control, server load balancing, energy-efficient networking, and seamless client mobility and virtual-machine migration, …

• New paradigms are needed in designing – Switches and APIs that offer greater flexibility without compromising performance, – Software platform for the control and management of SDNs, – Low-barrier for creating, testing, and evaluating new applications, and – Transition an existing network to SDN, and interoperating SDN with existing protocols and devices.

• SDN RG Proposal, and Mtg. Notes can be found at:– http://trac.tools.ietf.org/group/irtf/trac/wiki/sdnrg

• ACM SigComm HotSDN Workshop papers can be found at– http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2012/#/sigcomm/2012/hotsdn.php

• IETF84 FORCES mtg. notes can be found at:– https://datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/84/materials.html (see under “FORCES “ )

IETF84 update for GISFI-10, New Delhi 6Monday-10-September-2012

• Key highlights of SDN-RG– Use cases, requirements and Interoperability are the main points

of discussion• http://www.1-4-5.net/~dmm/sdnrg/IETF84/presentations/ • http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/84/slides/slides-84-iab-techplenary-6.pdf • http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/84/slides/slides-84-iab-techplenary-3.pdf• http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/84/slides/slides-84-iab-techplenary-4.pdf

– Bandwidth on demand, rapid rerouting of services for high-bandwidth Apps (HD video, gaming, etc.) appear to be main usage of SDN• There was a demonstration on this during the Bits-and-Bites session of IETF84

• Next Steps for SDN-RG – Work on use cases and requirements – Publish the drafts in Sept./Oct. 2012– Present the updated drafts during IETF85 mtg.

• The main drafts are as follows– SCIM: Protocol, SCIM : Core Schema, and

SCIM:Directory Services – SCIM Targeted Resource Extension (

• Current active discussion points can be found at:– http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/scim/current/maillist.html

IETF84 update for GISFI-10, New Delhi 8Monday-10-September-2012

• Key highlights of SCIM– XML may not be very popular, JSON has been voted in for

ID scheme development/finalization – There is a need to develop SCIM use case drafts– Security and Transport issue need to be considered in the

SCIM mechanism before and during the development

• Next Steps for SCIM– Discuss the revised drafts with WG chairs– Publish the revised draft in Sept./Oct. 2012– Present the updated drafts during IETF85 mtg.
