About I*ESN

I*ESN is a student organization who focuses on international students in Tilburg and on Dutch interna-tionally minded students. In the city centre I*ESN has its own bar, named Carpe Diem. Here different kinds of activities are organized in order to let everyone have the time of their lives during their stay in Tilburg. We also offer more serious opportunities for you, for example joining a committee, which is explained on one of the following pages.

Social ActivitiesWe organize many social activities to make your stay unforgettable and make it easy for you to meet other people. A list of activities that we organize: Introduction Camp, Poker Nights, Movie Nights, Pub Quizzes, Theme Parties, Board Game Nights, Ladies Night, Men’s Night, Speed Dating, TGIF, Interna-tional Parties and a Final Gala at the end of the semester. Check out our Activities Calendar for all the activities and the dates!

Dinners- Mentor Dinners After the Introduction Weekend, the semester will begin. A time to study, to explore your (temporary) new home country and gather lots of new experiences! Each week on Tuesday, mentor dinners take place. In the Introduction week you are assigned a group, with other international students. At the men-tor dinners your group meets another mentor group for food & fun. One of the groups is responsible for the cooking, the other group can sit back and enjoy the cooking skills of their hosts. Not for long though, the week after it will be their turn to prepare a delicious meal! At the very first mentor dinner, the mentors will show you some of the fine Dutch Haute Cuisine. Each week after the mentor dinner, all groups will meet for some partying in Carpe Diem! Mentor Dinners are organized for exchange students but can also be attended by degree-seeking students, on our website you can find a form that you can fill in to participate. - International DinnersDuring International Dinners, a small group of students from a certain country, region or culture will cook a meal for a group of people and show a presentation about their country. The aim of the night is to discover more about other cultures by showing a native dish, native music and more! Last semester we had an Indonesian, South-East Asian and Bulgarian Dinner, which were all a big success!

ExcursionsExcursions are a great way to discover cities and places in the Netherlands. In the meantime, you meet many other international students! Our Activities coordinator Joyce will make sure you get to see the best places! Our first excursion will be to Amsterdam on Saturday February 4th. Also, we have a Mys-tery Excursion planned, the destination is still top secret!

T-DaysOn T-Days you get to know a bit more about Tilburg and its surroundings. This semester we will have the following T-Days: Ice Skating, Go-karting and lasergaming, a Willem II soccer match, a cycle tour to the beer brewery and a visit to the Reptile Museum. All of this will take place in Tilburg!

Committees

I*ESN has several committees to support the board. These committees are open for everyone to join. The only condition is that you are or become a member of I*ESN, which has a lot of other benefits! As you might know by now, I*ESN organizes a lot of activities and other things for international students. You can be part of this by joining a committee. Joining a committee will only take a few hours a week and will be truly valuable in terms of self-development, practical experience, and of course for your CV. You work with a group of students to achieve the goals of the committee. Roles can be assigned when you are in a committee (chair, treasurer, secretary for example). Since you work in a group, it’s also a great way to meet people with the same interests! When you are interested in a committee, please send an email to the given email address and explain shortly why you are interested in the specific committee, or ask the questions that you still have!

Activities CommitteeI*ESN organizes many activities, with which we can use some help! Would you like to get some hands on experience in organizing events? This is your chance! There are many activi-ties to organize, so there will definitely will be something that fits your interests. You will improve your organization skills and expand your network, as you will get to know a lot of international students on these activities. Besides it is a lot of fun! To apply, email [email protected]

Pub Quiz CommitteeMonthly, we organize a Pub Quiz. We need some students to come up with tricky questions, hosting the pub quiz and we need some skills to put everything together. So are you good with presentations, hosting an evening or tricky questions? Join! To apply, email [email protected]

Battle CommitteeNext semester we might have Battle of the Committees, where each committee can earn a certain amount of points with for example being present, dressing up, do fun tasks, etc. However, we need some people to set up this committee, which is a great opportunity! Interested? Send an email to [email protected]@iesntilburg.nl.

5 I*ESN Tilburg Magazine - Volume 1 - Issue 4

Social Projects CommitteeWhat does it mean to be in this committee? Together with other members of the commit-tee, you will be looking for the possibility to start up even more social projects throughout the city, in cooperation with our partner Serve the City. To apply, email [email protected]

Promo CommitteeAre you so enthusiastic about I*ESN that you want to spread the word and let everyone know about who we are and what we do? Then the Promo Committee is perfect for you! Your responsibilities will be to promote I*ESN during the introduction week and do promotion on campus, so everyone will know about I*ESN! You will work in a team of very enthusiastic and motivated people, which is also a great reason to join! To apply, email [email protected]

Bar CommitteeAs you might know, I*ESN has Carpe Diem, a bar in the city center. For Carpe Diem we are looking for people who are interested in working one or more nights behind the bar and become the hero of the evening since you provide everyone’s drinks. Experience is not re-quired (it is an advantage though). Keep in mind that you don’t have to work every party, we will fit people in according to their wishes! To apply, email to [email protected]

Editorial CommitteeThis committee is responsible for the contents of the I*ESN magazine. There is room for various things: interviews, articles, photography and other creative input. You have a lot of freedom in the contents and the topics you want to address. Since the magazine is coming out only a couple of times per year, it won’t take a lot of your time; about 1-2 hours a week. To apply, email [email protected]

Research CommitteeWe have a research group, together with the (political) student bodies SAM and Front. You will do research on a valuable to international students: Housing! Last semester we sent out a survey to all in-ternational students. We have all the data, but still need to do the analyzing. You will receive a certificate from both I*ESN and the University that you participated in the research and most important, you can have a true impact on University policy! Interested? To apply, email [email protected]

Book of Faces CommitteeAt the end of the semester, sadly enough, it is time for some students to go home again. To alleviate this horrible pain and to preserve the great memories, I*ESN brings out a Book of Faces which contains personal details and experiences from all the international students of the semester. In this committee you will for example decide which questions you want to ask the students and what the lay out will look like.To apply, email [email protected] apply, email [email protected]

6I*ESN Tilburg Magazine - Volume 1 - Issue 4

Maintenance CommitteeWe are also looking for a maintenance committee in order to make the new bar a won-derful place where many unforgettable moments will take place! During the year small shortcomings might need to get fixed, and we might have to paint it sometime. So if you are the Bob the Builder we are looking for, apply for the maintenance committee! To apply, email [email protected]

Acquisition CommitteeThis committee is all about contacting possible new sponsors and negotiating contracts. Looking around for new opportunities is also part of the job. It won’t take a lot of your time, about 1 or 2 hours a week. You will improve your negotiation skills and gain valuable experience in looking for and attracting sponsors. To apply, email to [email protected]

Reasons to join a committee:

1. They are great fun to do!

2. Personal development

3. Looks great on your Curriculum Vitae

4. Get to know new people that share the same interests

Carpe Diem is the name of the I*ESN bar in the city centre. It is a great location to organize activities and of course a lot of nice parties! We have this building since last October and so far it has been great! We sell drinks for very cheap prices, served by our own bar committee!

On the Activities Calendar you can see which activities are in Carpe Diem: the ones with a asterisk (*) behind them. For entering Carpe Diem you need to be an I*ESN member, which you will find information on later in this magazine.

Carpe Diem can be translated as ‘seize the day’, a message we want to give to you when studying abroad in a totally different country! Enjoy the time that you are here!

Dennis van Erp - President

Hello my new international friends! Welcome to the flat country of tulips, windmills,

bikes, wooden shoes and I*ESN Tilburg! Are you ready for the experience of a life-

time? Trust me, you will love it! Let me tell you something about myself. It all started

on a rainy and cold January evening in 2008... I decided it was time to spread

my wings and on the spur of the moment I applied to go on exchange to Madrid.

One year later I was having siestas & fiestas in the beautiful country of Spain. I

absolutely loved the international student life and wished it would never end.

So, back in Tilburg I became active in helping international students and had an

amazing time with people from all around the world. This year I did some teaching

in India, a truly crazy but inspiring time. And in June I joined the board of I*ESN

Tilburg, a new international chapter in my life. Hope to see you all soon!

Jiska Vroon - Building manager

Hi there! My name is Jiska and I’m 22 years old. This year I am the building manager of our very

new building named Carpe Diem. It is ours now since October, so everything was and

still is new for us, but Carpe Diem is ready for a new semester full of parties and other

activities, and so am I! Besides of being busy with I*ESN I like to travel and see different

cultures, hang out with friends and do some sailing in my beautiful hometown in the south

west and undiscovered part of The Netherlands. Enjoy your time here Tilburg, make sure

you have the time of your life, live everyday like it’s the last, Carpe Diem!

Tilburg, a new international chapter in my life. Hope to see you all soon!

Robert Broers - Vice PresidentHey everyone,, I am Robert Broers, 22 years old and originally from Roermond, located in the southern part of the Netherlands. I study business economics at theAvans University in ‘s Hertogenbosch, but have never left Tilburg since I originally started business economics at the Tilburg University. Last year I got in contact with the international life in Tilburg for the first time. This summer, I*ESN evolved out of a merger between ESN and ICONN. I wanted to participate in this great project, so I applied for the board, and have been lucky enough to be accepted as the Vice President of I*ESN. Apart from I*ESN, I like to watch movies, go out and listen to music. Interacting with people is something I love to do, as I am pretty much interested in everything, especially if somebody is passionate about a certain subject. I also try to work out whenever I can, as a board year usually does not improve your overall fitness! I hope every one of you will have a great time in Tilburg with I*ESN!! One last word of advice: Enjoy your student life now you still can! Hope to meet you soon! :)

Dutch language

To a lot of you the Dutch language is something completely new, and yes it is one of the hardest languages in the world! Don’t start to panic now! I listed some of the most useful words for you guys so you can start learning them right away!

Dutch (Nederlands) is a West Germanic language and the native language of the majority of the population of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Suriname, the three member states of the Dutch Language Union. Most speakers live in the European Union, where it is a first language for about 23 million and a second language for another 5 million people. It also holds official status in the Caribbean island nations of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, while historical minorities remain in parts of France and Germany, and to a lesser extent, in Indonesia, and up to 600,000 native Dutch-speakers may be living in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The Cape Dutch dialects of Southern Africa have been standardised into Afrikaans, a mutually intelligible daughter language of Dutch which today is spoken to some degree by an estimated total of 15 to 23 million people in South Africa and Namibia.

BicyclesThe best way to move around in Tilburg is by bike! You might think that taking the bus is also easy but it usually takes a lot of time and it gets expensive. It is really safe to bike in Tilburg because there are bike paths everywhere. There is even one long bike path from University to the city center called ‘the red bike lane’ where you barely run into traffic lights. If you want a new bike, go to the bike shops. You can find them by going to Google Maps and searching for ‘Fietsenwinkel’ (which means bicycle shop). New bikes are expensive and there is a chance your bike gets stolen, so we recommend just buying a second-hand one!

Public TransportTravelling by public transport is quite convenient in the Netherlands and in Tilburg. In Tilburg its the easiest to transport yourself by bike (for most of us). When you want to plan your trip, the best website to look at is www.9292ov.nl It has an English version and is very easy to use.

TrainTilburg has three train stations: Tilburg Centraal, Tilburg Universiteit and Tilburg Reeshof. When you just want to use the train, you can look at www.ns.nl, which is the website of the Dutch Railway system. Here you can also check the fares. If you are planning on traveling by train a lot, it might be a good idea to buy a discount card from NS. This is only valid on non-peak hours, but you get a 40% discount on your train ticket, and you can take 3 friends who get the same discount if they travel together with you! The card costs 55 euro, so try to calculate beforehand whether you will actually save money with this card.

BusThe bus operator in Tilburg is Veolia (www.veolia-transport.nl). You have to pay for the bus with an OV-chipkaart. This is a new system of paying, introduced a couple years ago. It can be used for busses, trains, metro and trams. For the metro and trams it is obligated to have one, there is no other way to purchase a ticket. For the busses it will be like this soon, so it is best to get one.

How does it work? You will notice the white poles on Central Station and the yellow cabins in the buses. They all have the same pink logo on it. These are the checkpoints.

1. Purchase a card. For this you can go to Central Station. In the centre you find a desk: ask the people behind this desk about the anonymous OV Chip-card.2. Charge your card. You can charge money on your card at the regular train ticket machines, or at the machine that can be found at the entrance of the Library (University). You cannot travel when your card is empty, so make sure you have enough credit.3. Travel! When you enter a means of transportation, hold your card in front of the checkpoint until it beeps. You are now checked in. When you leave, do the same thing. Don’t forget this, because you cannot check in again if you did not check out!

The costsGenerally, the OV Chip-card is cheaper than the normal tickets. We recommend this card above others: it is easier and it will pay itself back during your stay here.

Queen of RomanceThe Queen of Romance, one famous and notorious notion. The concept is as following: Among you guys, there will be one person who spies on everything and everyone in secret. He or she passes this on to the editor of this magazine. Every magazine, a new story will be published with all the gossips, lovers, and drunk actions which were maybe actually meant to be hidden forever for the other students. But, there is good news as well: Your real names will not be mentioned, instead, we just describe this person in a specific way. Let’s pick one example of the magazines of last year: “The Foam Party was epic, but even more so for hooking up. Girls in bikinis and 1,50 euro tequila shots proved to be great catalyst for the perfect storm. A tiny Spanish girl that has been frequently seen with an Irishman was on scene “warming up” to a heavy hitting Brazilian AND the aforementioned tall French Canadian. Impressive. The same petite Canadian previously spotted with a Board member was seen making the most of the foamy goodness by kissing a tall Irishman.” So be warned!

Life at VerbsIn this section, several trademarks and persons will be described in some Verbs departments. Verbernelaan (Verbs for short) is the place where many international students will live and therefore a lot of activity is going on. We as outsiders would love to know what exactly is going on in these flats in a specific department. A Editorial Committee member will visit one evening one of these departments and will report everything that he or she notices and will be published in the magazine.

Pass it OnThe “pass it on” concept is quite easy. Get to know the mentors and buddies in more details. The “pass it on” is a short interview that has been given to another mentor or buddy every magazine. Several questions will be asked and you will get to know several things you did not found out before. The person who received the “pass it on” has to give this section of the magazine to another mentor or buddy. In this way, we will all get to know the mentors better than ever before.

The welcome package you received at the Arrival Days contains an Lebara-mobile pre-pay card. ESN the Netherlands has made an arrangement with Lebara-mobile that we provide all our international students with an Lebara-mobile prepay card. Lebara-mobile is an ideal provider for international since they have very cheap prepaid rates for calling to another country. Their slogan is: “The best way to make calls within the Netherlands and to numbers abroad! “ and they live up to it with attractive rates like 7 cents per minute to a landline in Argentina and 6 cents for a text; 6 cents per minute to Italy and 6 cents per text; and only 4.5 cents per minute to China and 6 cents per text.Since your prepay card does not contain any airtime yet, you will need to upgrade your account before being able to call. Prepaid cards can for instance be bought in most supermarkets, gas stations and at the railway station (Kiosk and AH to go). With that, it is also possible to top up your airtime online via their website and even with Facebook. In Dutch airtime is called “beltegoed”.
