HY Pierre Matter was born in 1964.
A mystical child, then a tormented teenager, he studies mathematics without conviction. It is only logical that he naturally heads for the mysterious universe of artistic creation, though it was in an erratic way at the start. His advance in this field leads him to be confronted with all kinds of expressions and materials, from oil to gouache, to ink, from comic strips to canvas, and also stone bas-reliefs. However, the hidden logic of events – what sceptical people call luck – brings him to focus on volumes.
Taking a cue from comic characters, Matter’s inspiration leads his imagination to explore the ideas of the future and science fiction. Although not purposely trying to be a part of any movement, his sculptures share strong similarities to the genre known as Steam-punk. Like the ideas of this genre, the journey and mystery of the likes of Herman Melville and the Bermuda Triangle are ever-present themes in his mind’s eye as he dreams of sperm whales, sharks and submarines in a portrayal of danger, drama and supertankers. He holds the view that men have evolved into partly mechanical beings with extensions of machines making up part of the whole that is a human being. Matter depicts these external additions, such as integrated prosthesis in nano-technologies and simple mechanisms that we use in everyday life, and shows how reliant we have become on them. In doing this, he shows the viewer the harmony that now exists between humans and materials.
Pierre Matter has exhibited extensively in France, Germany, Switzerland, New York, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore. In the year 2008, his works were exhibited in the following museums in China:
Contemporary Art, Shanghai
Museum of Guangzhou Art Academy, Guangzhou
RCM the Museum of Modern Art, Nanjing
Gallery of Luxun Art Academy, Shenyang
Today Art Museum Beijing
“My work fits into this disruptive era, when all limits are constantly being called into
question by technology and science. It’s a modest attempt to apprehend by means of
forms the effects of uncontrolled acceleration of change on our lives and on our planet.”
