IELTS
IELTS is the English language testing system recognised for entry to UK universities. A common requirement is 6.5 on a 9-point scale but it depends on the university and the course. To start a course in medicine, the score needed is usually 7.0 (Advanced level) but for a general foundation year, it could be 5.5 (the beginning of Upper Intermediate).
The course
The IELTS test has four parts. Class teaching provides thorough coverage of each part and lesson time is typically divided as follows:
Listening 15%
Reading 30%
Writing 40%
Speaking 15%
Students are expected to spend additional time reading and listening on their own as well as completing reading and writing homework. Teachers will help students plan how to use their private study time.
