Standards Education Committee

Joint committee of IEEE Educational Activities Board and IEEE Standards Association Board

Mission(1) Secure and disseminate learning materials on the

application of standards in the design and development aspects of educational programs.

(2) Secure and provide short courses about standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice.

(3) Lead other education initiatives planned jointly by EAB and the SA as needed.

Vision for Standards Education Web Portal

A curriculum development effort funded in part by a United States National Science Foundation grant

Aim is to provide university educators and students with opportunities to learn how to read, understand, and apply standards

Updated web portal is in development with the aim of delivering state-of-the art content on Standards Education

Page 6: IEEE Standards Education Steve Mills and David Law April 2008: IEEE Region 8 Meeting

IEEE Standards Education Portal

Goal: Establish the IEEE as the global one-stop source for information on education about standards

More content for students and educators Supporting the incorporation of the teaching of standards in the

undergraduate engineering and engineering technology programs About 450 schools worldwide have full access to IEEE standards

through the IEEE/IET Electronic Library About 10 schools make use of this feature…

Increase content useful to the practicing professional Standards, their applications, and their impact on designing new

products, processes, and services

Challenges at the University Level

Many academics and practitioners do not understand the centrality of standards in the discipline

Standards are seen as the opposite of creativity in design In many curricula, economic constraints, legal constraints,

compliance and interoperability are considered secondary ..and sometimes absent

Techniques and devices based on standards are often taught with little or no regard to standards

…taught without referring to the standardization infrastructure

Many graduating students have never seen a standard, do not know how to tackle one or find one

Standards are often not used in “capstone” projects of Engineering programs

IEEE Position Paper on Standards in the Curriculum

Part of the work plan of the IEEE Standards Education Committee

Will state the desired role of technical standards in the academic curriculum

Programs in engineering and computer science

Will be used in model curriculum development and in discussions with accrediting bodies

More Challenges

Industry technical professionals often assume that standardization is performed by large corporations and the government

Professionals complain that information about standards updates never gets to them

It is often difficult to understand interrelationship between standards

Standards are viewed as not being user-friendly

Continuing Education

Page 14: IEEE Standards Education Steve Mills and David Law April 2008: IEEE Region 8 Meeting

Addressing Standards Education for Practitioners

Workshops on standards are demanded by the IEEE membership

The number one area requested for continuing education is face to face workshops and conferences

First standards education workshop held in 2007

Standards Education Committee planning future standards workshops, seminars and conferences

“Expert Now” online learning courses on standards

Continuing Education

Page 15: IEEE Standards Education Steve Mills and David Law April 2008: IEEE Region 8 Meeting

First Workshop on Standards

First joint Educational Activities and Standards Association sponsored workshop took place in Washington DC in November 2007

Held at same venue as IEEE Globecom Topic was the IEEE 802 Family of Standards, focusing

primarily on the IEEE 802 wireless technology

Continuing Education
