GOALS FOR 2018
• New Section website for 2018. Will be up to
date with upcoming events and have useful
resources (e.g., IEEE/PSU/Bucknell websites,
social media, etc…)
• Invite speakers from IEEE Distinguished
Lecturers program to give unique talks to
Central PA Section.
• Work with PSU student chapter to engage with
undergraduate students and increase Section
participation/interest.
• Increase communications and connections with
student branches at PSU and Bucknell.
• Increase senior membership count by
encouraging faculty to apply for advancement.
• Plan “off campus” trip to external industrial sites.
Successful past examples include an extended
tour at Three Mile Island (Harrisburg area), and
the Locust Ridge Wind Farm (Schuylkill County
PA).
OUTSTANDING MEETINGS (>30

Central Pennsylvania Section
ISSUES AND CONCERNS
• Connecting with industry and non-academic members in our section.
• Faculty are well served by societies, but many have little time/interest to participate in Section volunteer roles/activities.
• Why should graduates maintain IEEE membership? They want to know how being an IEEE member helps them in their career.
• Job placement, salary negotiation
• Congressional lobbying
• Collective bargaining, unionization

engineering students – about 200 students attended!
• March: UPJ engineering seniors substation tour
• April: UPJ senior engineering project awards
• May: Two hour CPD seminar on Power Quality Case

GOALS FOR 2018
• Increase retention and new members through several
efforts...
• Promote student membership during student events.
• Offer several Continuing Professional Development
seminars to provide value and interest in the Section.
• Get back into more events. In the past, our members
wanted lighter tours rather than a “meeting”. Efforts
requesting ideas have been unsuccessful, so we will set
some things up and hope they come!
• Continue supporting joint events with UPJ, the
University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Johnstown Chair
is on the Advisory Board.
OUTSTANDING MEETINGS (>30 ATTENDEES)
• None as of late. Formerly, PSPE hosted an
Engineer’s Week banquet with Mathcounts,
ASHRAE, and IEEE. We always had about 100
attendees and perhaps 20 IEEE members. This
event was not held last year or this year due to
organizational issues at PSPE.

▸The high cost of membership dues keep potential members away considering the only benefit is a Spectrum magazine. To access periodical requires additional costs, to join societies requires additional costs as well.
▸Recruiting and developing members for leadership roles
▸Ways to improve participation to activities and elections.
