IntroductionOctober 6–9 this year 1,500 economic development professionals from around the world will assemble in Philadelphia, PA for the year’s biggest and most comprehensive economic development event: the Annual Conference of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). This year, we are hosting a Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania tri-state conference. Join us and you will learn about the many economic development lessons of this 4,500 square mile area.

IEDC 2013 Annual Conference | Conference Tracks

Track 1: Re-imagining Infrastructure and Development

Infrastructure is one of the primary building blocks of our economy. As older regions transform from traditional manufacturing to service and knowledge-based economies, new uses must be found for old smokestacks, railways, developments, military bases and, now, oil refineries. Conversely, newer communities may be planning and developing infrastructure, fiber, alternative energy sources, and smart grids. Whether, urban, suburban, or rural, all regions share many of these opportunities and challenges. In this track, examples of successful transformations will be explored and experts will discuss the planning, implementation strategies, leadership and investments necessary to achieve success. They will also look at new challenges arising from advances in technology that challenge our traditional thinking around geographic location and the sustainable infrastructure and development needs in the future.

Track 2: Promoting Innovation

All types of communities succeed when they apply new ideas to their existing assets. Creativity, cost-efficiency, multi-purpose solutions, leadership, and collaboration are keys to success for communities large and small. Out-of-the-box thinking drives the development of new firms, technology, and opportunities. Using stellar examples, this track will scour the globe for lessons learned and strategies to drive innovation.

Track 3: Transforming Economies

The landscape of the economic development industry is undergoing a significant transformation. The strategies of the last decade are no longer viable. Communities are thinking regionally and globally instead of locally. Technology is driving the development of new industries and marketing strategies. Economic development organizations are forming new partnerships and creating new structures. With the risk of today’s misses being too costly, economic developers must learn from the past and plan better for the future. Through lively and candid conversations about today’s winners and losers, sessions in this track will help communities create the blueprint for tomorrow’s economy.

Track 4: attracting, Retaining, and Developing Human Capital

A community’s ability to prosper in the knowledge economy is determined by its ability to attract, retain and develop high-skilled and knowledgeable workers. New skill sets are needed by workers to meet the demands of employers. The competition for skilled workers is stronger than ever and international. In the post recession economy, talented workers have many options on where to work and live. Savvy economic developers have made smart alliances with educational institutions as wells as with companies, foundations and governments. While there are no silver bullets, the sessions in this track will explore how to attract, retain and develop highly skilled workers for today and for the future workforce. Additional sessions will focus on the cutting-edge skills economic developers need to be successful leaders in their communities.
