published a resolution that has deen adopt-ed by the State Board of Regents, as a wisemeasure, and one destined to be of valuedservice fo the cause of negro educationthruout the state.

THE authoritiec of tne school have longrecognized the necessity for devising somemeans to reach and better the condition ofa large body of negro teachers in the state,who are graduates of good schools, havetaught for years, and yet the hurry andpush of living has precluded the possibilityof taking any extended time from their vo-cations to devote to self improvement.

TillS same condition has been recog-nised by all the states most progressive inadopting modern methods af educationalbetterment, and they have been the pioneersin inaugurating plans to reach and upliftthese kind of teachers ,and by so doing, re-sults have shown, that the system, has beenbenefitted.

MUCH criticism has been engendered bythe present system of awarding certificates.It is claimed that a number- too great foreducational efficiency- of inexperiencedteachers, is turned loose upon the field, towork its own sweet will upon the public. Asto the justness of this claim, and the conse-quent dangers that are alleged to ensue, weare at liberty to doubt and not be consid-ered unreasonable, did we suggest that suchclaims would be more convincing if sub-jected ro the acid test of proof.

THE law as it stands may not be the

most ideal for either white or black; but sosatisfactory has it proved that no otherplan has assumed the dignity of seriousconsideration. The plan herein containedposesses the merit of appealing to quite anumber, of teachers of experience, who mayavail themselves of the opportunity offered,

THE Summer School is in session at justthe time when the teachers' vacationcomes. Surely, those who desire to growin the profession, to learn from those whodrink from the perennial springs of know-ledge, to lay up for themselves mostvaluable assets for the profession theyfollow, will eagerly avail themselves of thebenefits of this new departure.

IT is to this deserving class, whereveryou are, in West Virginia, THE MONTHLY,

desires to appear here in these columns.THE head of the school, in recommend-

ing this resolution intended it not for aflood gate, thru which might rush theundeserving, the inexperienced and theunqualified. It is hoped on the other hand,that it will be an incentive to those whoare about to dry rot in the profession.

atory Contest.

On Satunlay night of the 7thinst., the local preliminary Contestwas held in Fleming Hall, forthe selection of two candidates torepresent the West Virginia Col-ored Institute at an Inter-SchoolDeclamatory Contest to be held atCharleston, some time in April,among representatives from Sum-ner High School of Parkersburg,Douglass High School of Hunting-ton, Garnett High School ofCharleston, and the West Virgin-ia Colored Institute.

The heads of these Schools hadformulated this meritorious planfor the developement and encour-agement of oratorical work amongthe schools some time ago, and theresult of this action will be lookedforward to with more than pass-ing anticipation.

Although the declamationsrendered were old familiar friends,yet there was such an air of indivi-dualism thrown around each, bythe respective declaimers, that theaudience; greeted each with un-stinted appreciation.

Miss Reynolds with "The thiefon the cross," was declared thefirst by a large margin. Secondplace was awarded to WilliamFerguson by a narrow margin.

Words of praise are due each ofthe other participants, but CliffordJ. Gore, with "The Black horseand his Rider," aroused more en-thusiastic demonstration than anyof the other contestants excetpMiss Reynolds.

The Children of the ModelSchool Give Exhibition

The children of the Model Schoolunder the management of thePractice teachers, Misses EthelBrown, Marie Miles, Mary L. Mc-Gee, Lena M. King, Mrs. J. W.Jamerson, and Mr. Henry M. Payn-ter, gave a pleasing, exhibition toa large audience, the night of Feb-rurary 28. The extreme youth-fulness of the model pupils, theskill with which they performedthe various numbers on the prog-ram, and the beautiful appearancethey presented under the brightlights of the stage, as they marchedthru the intricate evolutions oftheir drills, were the subjects ofhearty applause. The recitationof "The Childhood of Hiawatha"and "Lincoln's Gettysburg Speech,by little Helen Jones and MauriceJones, were efforts that wouldhave reflected credit on tudents

of more matured years. The mod-el school, teachers and pupils, is tobe commended for its evidentsigns of high class work.

r;==::-. 0 THE RURAL TEACHER: By request, we will give you someT idea as to what is being done in our school in the way of dom-estic science and art. ~ We organized a sewing class in ourschool four years ago, with all the girls as members. Quite a

~=='lnumber of boys took up the work and have done well. ~ Webegan with the first principles in sewing, such as basting, hemming,felling, gathering, making button-holes, and stitching. The girls wouldave the best pieces of the plain sewing and arrange them in a book.

After finishing plain sewing, we began the making of some usefularticles, such as aprons, bonnets, table covers, pillow shams, waists, dress-tng sacques, and other useful things that could be used in the home.

Weare glad to say tha t we have had the co-operation of the parentsin this work, which has made the work quite easy. The children losevery little time from their regular studies, for they become so interest-ed in the sewing that they take the recess and noon period for much ofthe work.

This term we have added cooking to our course. Some of ourfriends gave us a stove, table, cabinet, chairs, and other utensils, thatare needed in a kitchen.

We began this work by teaching the girls the care of the kitchen'from a sanitary point of view. We then gave instruction on plain cook-ing, as we have it in the ordinary homes. After they have learned this,they are ready to cook from a recipe. We go to work now and instructthem just how to prepare each meal and the things that are best suitedfor each meal.

We find the children as much interested in this as they are in thesewing. The partrons and friends are both and helpful to us, as theygive us both support and material to be used in the kitchen.

We do not have cooking every day as we have sewing, but havecertain days of the week for that purpose; on these days we think thetime is well spent so long as we are doing somthing useful.

An affair, that has created morethan ordinary comment in Clarks-burg and the northern end of theState, was the program renderedby the graduates of the West Vir-ginia Colored Institute on the eve-ning of March the 6, at Pride A.

M. E. Chapel.Unusual interest was manifest-

e::l in the probable effect of suchan entertainment because it wasthe first time that a function ofsuch note, and composed of rep-resentative graduates of this schoolh 1d been staged in one of the firstcities of the state.

On the evening of the 6 thec'iurch was filled with the bestNegro citizens of the city and anumber, of visitors from Grafton.Weston, and Fairmont were pres-ent. Each number received gen-erous appreciation.

The musical numbers were ap-plauded to the echo. The papersof Prof. and Mrs. L. R. Jordan,were revelations, of imformation tomany of the audience, who hadnit previously known of the possi-bilities for prac.ical, literary andmusical uplift offered at the State'sforemost Negro School.

We regret that the lack of spacemakes it impossible for us to givean analytical review of the pro-gram.

The address of Rev. Hurley wasinstructive ard enthusiastic.

From the opening notes of thelilting music of the "InstituteSchool Song," to the last dulcettones of Mr. Jones' cornet solo, itwas a treat, increasing in richness,appealing to the ear and intellect,

\::_J It is hoped that those of you who are desirous to become grid-iron "Stars" will put into practice the coming season, some of thesepoints: but before stating some of the important points relative to thesubject, I believe it would be expedient to impress upon the reader theimportance of each position that makes up the squad as a whole. Weknow nhat eleven (11) men constitute a team, and each position is tobe filled, with the best men in order to expect a good strong team; andthen, if this be true, you who are desirous of becoming gridiron "Stars"must find the position that you are bes tfitted for, and develope your-self for that position, because there are few fellows who can play anyposition on the team well. So many fellows get the idea that the menwho play in the back field, and carry the ball most of the time shinehigher in the estimation of the spectators than the men playing in theline; if any of you have, it is a mistake, because the men who make itPOssible for the men in the back field to make the required gains areto be given as much credit as the ones who made the gain. I haveknown players, and have even had team-mates, who had the abovestated idea of shining and would change from the line to the back fieldand make a complete failure in the back-field, when they had all pros-Pects of developing into a star guard, tackle, center, or end. The pointI am trying to make clear is this: it is much better to be a Big "4" in

the line than to be a cipher (0) behind the line; so we can see that eachposition is important, and when they are well filled the team may bethought of asa chain of eleven (11) strong links. ow for few pr acii.cal points on "Booting the pig skin".

"KICKING OFF"

This part of the game is not emphasized enough among the srrall.er teams, and it is probably due to the fact, that it appears to be oflittle importance; but when we look at it from this point of view, thata good high "Kick off" makes it more difficult for the opponent tojudge the ball and make a successful catch, and will also allow theteam mates to get down the field and down him in his tracks. Then itis of some importance. This good kicking can be brought about, fii st,by training the eyes as to the place you wish to plant your foot agairstthe ball. Eye training is as essential in kicking as it is in batting thebase ball. Ty Cobb, the world's greatest batter, says that his successis due largely to eye training; the same point holds good in kicking.I have seen players in kicking off to the apponent s get back from .heball ten (10) yds. run up to make his kick and miss the ball entirely.Again I have seen the player dig enough earth with the toe of his shoethat a kid would have all he could remove in a wheelbarrow and sendthe ball to the side line, these are just some of the cases of badly trainedeyes in "kicking off." There is no established rule as to how to setthe ball for a kick off, because different kickers have different ways toset the ball, but it is for you to find the way, from which you can getthe best results, and practice that way. See to it that you get yourfoot under the ball so as to riase it sufficiently in the air. It is alsoimportant that you have perfect control of the swing of your leg.
