IntroductionProfessor Miles Highbottom had nally hit the big time. Digging near the ancient city of Arsinoe he had
come across an undisturbed temple under the Egyptian sands. For weeks he drove his diggers until nally,
they reached an inner sanctum. There, on a pedestal and surrounded by images of the crocodile god Sobek,
he spied a golden idol of such intricate detail that its discovery was sure to catapult him to the forefront ofEgyptology.
Despite the cries of warning from the locals who spoke of the curses lining the walls, he grasped the idol and
took it from its resting spot. Outside, the wind began to howl. A sandstorm was approaching quickly and Miles
ordered the site covered while he made off to his rented house to await its passing.
The storm raged for 24 hours and when it subsided the foreman from his dig site went to the house of
Professor Highbottom. What he found was in shambles. Everything in the house had been smashed to pieces
and the Professors bloody and tattered clothing was scattered everywhere. The idol was nowhere to be found.
Now teams of archaeologists race to nd the idol and claim it for their own. Fame and fortune await the onewho nds it or does it?
The GameThis game is designed as a multi-player scenario. It can be played as a one-off game or tacked on to a larger
adventure. Each player or group of players represent a team searching for the Idol of Sobek.
The Board
The board for this game can be any size the players desire, but one roughly 2 x 4 was used for the playtestversion. It should be just big enough that a model cannot exit the board from the center in less than 2 turns.
The board should have some rough desert-like terrain; this can include dunes, palm trees, rocky plateaus,
or Egyptian style ruins. There should be at least one building placed in the center of the board and this will
represent the home of Professor Highbottom.
This was the board used for
a demo game at a local store.
As you can see, it does not
require much terrain, just a
few things to block some line
of sight and provide the feel of
a dig in the desert.

The CharactersEach player should have one to three models. One of these should be a Grade
3 Professor, the others can be any Grade 2 or Grade 1 model that ts the theme
of the players group. Players can be teamed up (with each getting one or twomodels) or the scenario can be run as every man for himself (each player should
have three models).
The EncountersThere are 7 encounter markers for this game. Players should feel free to add more
should the size of the board or the number of players increase. You should not
use less than seven. The designations below refer to seven standard playing cards
(Ace through 7). Each payer should place approximately an equal number of the
encounter markers. They all should be at least 8 from any board edge.
A: Tablet: You have found a tablet with details to the location of the Idol of Sobek.
The model that uncovers the clue, must take a BR test. If they pass, the Idol can
be placed anywhere within 3 of the Encounter Marker (but no closer than 6
from any board edge). If the model fails the BR test, then he has misunderstood
the hieroglyphics on the tablet and an opposing player should place the Idol
anywhere 8 (but no closer than 6 from any board edge) from the Encounter Marker. If a player uncovers the
tablet but chooses not to attempt to decipher it yet (they decide to wait for a model with a higher BR score to
arrive) they can do so, but all other players will know what the model has. Also, see Special Rules at the end
of this scenario for details of the Idol.
2: Soft Sand: Two of the markers are for Soft Sand. If a model
stumbles into the soft sand, they must pass a DG test or become
bogged down. And all models within 3 of the model in the soft
sand must also pass DG tests or become bogged down. Models that
are bogged down have their DG score reduced to 1 and their SP
reduced to 1. To extricate itself from the sand, a model must pass a
BW test.
3: Camel Herd: This is a herd of wandering camels. The model that
trips this encounter should be placed in the middle of the herd (three
to ve camels should be enough). The camels will move 4 each
turn. The player with initiative can move them in any direction, but
the camels will always travel in a straight line and always remain
in base contact with one another. The camel herd will block line of
sight. If a model shoots at the camels, they will stampede. Instead of

moving 4 each activation, they will move 8 and any model they come into contact with must take a DG test.
If the model fails, then it takes a WS 6 hit to one random location.
4: Dust Devil: The Dust Devil is a small whirlwind that races back and forth across the desert. The dust devil
blocks line of sight in a diameter circle. If the Dust Devil comes into base contact with a model, the model
must make a DG test or be temporarily vision-impaired. Models that fail the DG test will have their line of
sight reduced to just 6 for two turns. At the beginning of each turn, before models begin activating, the playerwith initiative moves the Dust Devil in any direction 6. The movement must be a straight line and must be
the full 6. If the Dust Devil is moved off the board, then it is no longer in play and cannot be brought back
onto the board.
5: The mad Arab: This is the Mad Arab. When this encounter is triggered the model will be attacked in close
combat by the Mad Arab (his stat card can be found at the end of this scenario). The Mad Arab will continue
to attack at the end of each turn until he is killed or the model he is attacking is Unconscious or Killed. If that
happens, he will move to attack the next closest model.
6: Dud: This encounter represents nothing being found.
7: Dud: This encounter represents nothing being found.
Special RulesThe Idol of Sobek: The Idol of Sobek is cursed. Any model
that carries it, risks being transformed into the Guardian of
Sobek (see stat sheet at the end of this scenario). When a model
rst retrieves the Idol, it must make a BR test. If it fails, it is
transformed into the Guardian. The player whose model was
transformed should control the Guardian and his models should
be placed under the control of another friendly player or if no
friendly player exists, then they should be moved each turn so
that they are not the closest model to the Guardian. They will not
shoot at it nor help in any way (Note: Players are free to come up
with their own way of handling this as long as it is agreed to by
all players before the start of the game). If a player passes the BR
test, then it has prevented the spirit of the Guardian from taking
possession. However, at the beginning of each turn, the model
must take a BR test in increments of -2 (rst -2, then -4, etc.) as it
ghts with the will of the Guardian for control. If the model fails
at any time before exiting, then it is transformed as above. Once
transformed, the player cannot move the Guardian off the board.Once the Guardian is killed, the model transforms back with
all wounds the Guardian suffered ignored. Of course the model is now without any equipment and running
around the desert with no cloths on. The model will not have to take any BR tests for the turn after he is
returned to normal, but will need to begin taking them again on subsequent turns, beginning with a normal BR
test, and then one at -2, -4, etc.

Throwing another model: Seems to me that one of the things I left out of the rules is something that comes
into play as you add more physically stronger models. So, here are some rules for one model throwing
another. A model must possess a BW of at least 5 in order to throw another model of equal or smaller size.
The attack is made normally, but instead of damage the defending model, if it loses combat, is grabbed and
hoisted over the head of the atttacking model. On the throwing models next turn, he can toss the held
model up to half his BW score (rounded up). The throwing model can also choose to hold the model over its
head and move up to half its SP instead of throwing (you know, to get closer to the edge of the cliff). If a held
model activates before it can be thrown, it must win a comparative BW test in order to break free. If it does
break free, it is placed on the ground and prone next to the model that it broke free from. If a model that is
holding another model is hit in combat, then it must make a BW test or drop the held model.
AppendixBelow is some information on Sobek and his worshippers in ancient Egypt. This informatioon could be
used to esh out a longer, multi-part scenario with the Idol constantly changing hands as worshippers and
archaeologists each seek to take possession of it.
****
Sobek was most popular in the city of Arsinoe. In fact, the Greeks renamed the city Crocodilopolis. Ancient
Egyptians would keep crocodiles in pools and temples. They ornamented the crocodiles with jewels in honor
of their beloved god, Sobek. The people of ancient Egypt worshiped Sobek in order to appease him, the
crocodiles, and to insure the fertility of their people and crops.
Sobek was called the Lord of Faiyum, and was considered the god who controlled the waters. The Nile was
very important to the people of Egypt. Water was necessary for the survival of crops, the success of trade,
and the livelihood of shing. These waters were lled with crocodile, so it was a matter of common sense toappease them through the worship of their leader, Sobek.
According to legend, Sobek was a fourfold deity. He represented the four elemental gods, Ra of re, Shu
of air, Geb of earth, and Osiris of water. A crocodile, a man with the head of a crocodile, or a mummied
crocodile are used as representations for Sobek. He is sometimes shown wearing a solar disk and horns like
those of Amon-Ra. Throughout history, he has been known as Sebek, Sebek-Ra, Sobk, Suchos, Sobki, and
Soknopais.
Sobek was revered for his ferocity and quick movement. It is said that he was the god who caught the four
sons of Horus in a net, as they emerged from the waters in a lotus bloom.
Set was a god of hostility and chaos. Some people held the belief that he was the epitome of evil. He was an
adversary to Osiris and Horus. Sobek is considered to be a cohort of Horus. It is said that Horus took the form
of a crocodile to retrieve the parts of Osiris body that Set had discarded in the waters of Egypt. Set was later
killed after an eighty-year war with Horus, in which Set tore out the left eye of Horus, and Horus tore out the
testicles of Set.

The Book of the Dead suggests that Sobeks closeness to Horus can be traced back to his participation in the
birth of this god. Sobek was responsible for calling Isis and Nephthys to aid in the protection of the dead. He
was the god from the Dark Water. It was believed, in some sects, that Sobek was the creator of the world.
These people believed that he arose from the Dark Water and put the world in order.
Animals associated with the gods were revered in ancient Egypt. They were considered sacred and protected.
They were given elaborate and costly burials when they died. Temples were built in their honor. Many
mummied crocodiles have been found in the tombs of Egypt. The dead crocodiles were mummied with the
use of natron or salt, then they were wrapped in strips of cloth, just as the humans of the time. Archeologists
found all ages of crocodiles in the tombs. In fact, many tombs contained not only young and adult crocodiles,
but the eggs of crocodiles were found, as well.
In Egypt, Kom Ombo is 30 miles North of Aswan. This was once the sanctuary for a large number of
crocodiles, and the center of worship for Sobek. Still standing, and open to the public for viewing, is the
temple that Sobek shared with the war god, Horace. This temple is most unique in that it consists of twin parts
that are attached but completely separate. Each temple has its own entrance, halls, and chapels.
****
Players can also feel free to substitute Sobek with any one of the Egyptian gods to suit the needs and tastes of
their own campaigns. The whole scenario could be slightly reworked to take place in South America with a
Jaguar god or India with a Tiger or Crocodile god.
