WINNER BEST BUDGET PROJECT - MONTAGNA LUNGA

Montagna LungaApartment, Limburg, Belgium

This compact apartment was designed for a young Italian woman with aliking for exotic colours and typically girly needs, so plenty of space forclothes and shoes was incorporated! At 70 sq metres the apartmentrequired creative and customised space planning from the designers, which certainly caught the eye of the judges. Since the space was a new-build in a contemporary buiding,Montagna Lunga was given the freedomto start from scratch, aiming for a ‘Sex and the City look mixed with aFloridian feel’. The client trusted the designers completely, so once thedesign was finalised the work took only four months to complete. You canexplore more of this property on page 89 in our Portfolio section.www.montagnalunga.be

HellaJongerius

This Dutch designer’s work is deeply rooted in craft and making, something sheremains dedicated to, shown in her latest collection with outdoor specialists Kettal

Words CLAIRE BARRETT Photography LOUISE BILLGERT

Kh nitting circles might be the latest fadamongst today’s hipsters, but Hella Jongeriushas been spearheading the artisan revolution indesign for years. Her work has always had adeep fascination in craft and making. Indeed inprevious interviews she herself has satcrocheting while talking.

Not today, when we meet at the recentMaison et Objet exhibition in Paris to discussher latest collaboration with Spanish outdoorfurniture company Kettal. Jongerius hasdesigned a range called Bob,which includes agarden club chair, footstool and side table. Thechairs are rather architectural, yet theirsquashy cushions give them a familiar, homelylook; indeed they wouldn’t look out of place inmany interiors. She’s created a sort of armchairfor the outdoors. With a metal frame, theintegrated cushions – ‘I can’t stand to haveloose cushions,’ she says – are in a sober grey, yet her trademark craft-based ‘signature’ is onthe arms, which are wrapped in coloured yarn.

‘The armrest is a collage of thin, woundropes. I was inspired by the look of those plasticindoor/outdoor chairs we all know,’ she says.‘It’s a sort of updated, softer version.’ It’s atypical move by Jongerius, delving back into the

past, into a collective heritage, and creatingsomething new that is imbued with thefamiliar.

Her trademark fascination with thehandcrafted goes right back the beginning ofher career. In 1993, she graduated from theprestigious Design Academy Eindhoven inproduct design, and was included in that year’sDroog Design exhibition at the Milan FurnitureFair – it launched the collective and Dutchdesign on to the international scene, a wittytwo-fingered response to the then current voguefor design as consumer product. She set up herown company, Jongeriuslab, which she now runsfrom Berlin while her team remain inRotterdam. Her work has always been aboutcelebrating the individual. Early editions were, therefore, one-offs, limited runs or batchproduction – much of it initially ceramic, butJongerius’s career (as her fame has risen andshe has increasingly been solicited by big-namemanufacturers) has seen her tread a interestingline between creating unique products andmass production.

Her big breakthrough was with her B Setporcelain dinner service for Royal TichelaarMakkum in 1998. Deliberately fired at an

incredibly high temperature, every piece isslightly deformed, making each one unique. Thetiny flaws give the ceramics a hand-made feel.Jongerius found joy in the imperfections andcelebrated the process of making these designs. The headline was that she achieved theindividual on a mass-produced scale, a themethat continues to dominate her work. ForAmerican textile company,Maharah, she wenton to create Repeat, an unusually largerepeating pattern that meant that no two piecesof furniture upholstered in the fabric would lookexactly the same, once more achieving anelement of randomness within mass-produceddesign.

Others came knocking. By 2005 the globalbrands of Ikea and Vitra had approached herand that year she designed a set of four largevases for Ikea’s PS range that are hand-decorated with perforated patterns, an ideataken from her early one-off embroideredceramics. For Vitra she created the incrediblysuccessful Polder sofa, her first mass-producedpiece of furniture, a slouchy design with large,odd-shaped cushions and mismatched buttonsthat has the feeling of being an old familyheirloom.

The connection with Vitra is one that shehas fostered: ‘I am very strict with who I workwith,’ she says. ‘I prefer longer relationships.

You go more in-depth and create a feeling for acollection that is made from the chemistrybetween the two partners.’ Polder was thebeginning of a deep relationship with Vitra. Shedeveloped five colour and fabric palettes forthat sofa, which led to them asking her todevelop colour palettes for future collections, and her 2007 ‘Inside Colours’ installation forthe My Home exhibition at the Vitra DesignMuseum. In 2006 she designed TheWorkerchair and sofa for the company, which includedher trademark handcrafted textile panels, andshe will show new designs at next year’s MilanFurniture Fair, all firmly under wraps for now.

But the big question is what do thesemultifarious companies seek from collaboratingwith Jongerius? From her past sales, it’s clearthat they’re chasing an audience – one withsimilar values to her, and a desire forauthenticity. Jongerius’s work – and success – isthat it taps into the current vogue for thehandcrafted, something that has recently beencoined ‘emotional design’ by interiors guru IlseCrawford, code for designs that invoke memoryand history, and delight through their use ofcolour, pattern and texture. But her fascinationis for producing them on such a huge scale, exploring whether it’s possible to maintain her‘handwriting’ in thousands of identicalproducts.

In a world so fast paced, where the media ison a persistent quest to discover the ‘new, new, new’, as Jongerius puts it, she places value onslowing down. ‘My work represents the longingfor slowness,’ she says. It’s the same reasonthat she loves working with materials ratherthan solely computers. ‘You lose “the blood” ofthe material and product with a computer.Youcan only get this from building a physical thing, something with tactility.Computers do takethis away.’

Looking to the future, will she work withKettal again? ‘We’ll have to see what theresponse is like!’ she laughs. For now she’spreparing for an exhibition in Rotterdam thatwill include new ceramic pieces in November, the same time as her second book,Misfit, isreleased. She has been experimenting with 150recipes for new mineral glazes, takinginspiration from old, traditional methods. ‘I amvery much into the recipe, the chemistry of howsomething is made. The process is much moreimportant to me – I get bored quickly at the endof the process, with something that is ready.Which is why collaborations are good, such aswith Kettal. When I have finished, the companytake in on and do what needs to be done tobring it to people!’ Leaving Jongerius to do whatshe does best, which is create great intuitivedesigns.www.jongeriuslab.com

Nothing beats a real fire when it comesto creating a cosy atmosphere. Modern

wood-burning stoves, with their clean-burntechnology, provide eco-friendly heating while

making a sleek style statement

Words KAY HILL

Wood-burning stoves have been aroundsince the 16th century, so it might seemsurprising that they have become anindispensable part of modern living once again.Humans seem to be drawn to the flickeringbeauty of flames but open fires —which createdraughts and smoke and are only 15 per centfuel efficient — seem a wasteful extravagancein these days of eco consciousness andausterity. The stove, on the other hand, offers avision of real flames combined with up to 85 percent fuel efficiency and savings on fuel bills.

It’s a winning combination. When BritishGas announced a 35 per cent price rise twoyears ago, sales of stoves soared. RichardHibben, national sales manager for fluecompany Specflue, estimates annual salesincreased by around 30 per cent, while Aga,which launched a range of stoves shortly beforethe gas price hike, reported 300 per cent growth.Overall sales have slowed slightly due to therecession but contemporary stoves are one areathat is still strong. ‘They are very fashionable, especially the modern stoves from Europe thatare freestanding,’ says Hibben. ‘Homes withwood-burning stoves are now seen as verydesirable and the cost of fitting one can berecouped in three to six years.’

It is possible to get the look of a wood-burning stove using gas — and electric versionsare becoming increasingly realistic — but thebiggest growth is in multi-fuel or log-burning

versions. David Knox, spokesman for Stovax, says burning wood in a modern, high-efficiencystove is completely carbon neutral: ‘Whenburned cleanly, wood releases into theatmosphere the same amount of carbon dioxideas the tree absorbed in its lifetime — and nomore than if it were allowed to rot naturally.’

Given that wood is usually grown locally, there is little in the way of transportationinvolved and its production is important increating local jobs, Knox adds. The BuildingResearch Establishment supports the ecoclaims of wood burners. Its figures show thatwhile 0.422kg of carbon are produced for eachkW hour of mains electrical heat (0.265kg foroil) wood produces just 0.025kg of carbon togenerate the same amount of heat.

Of course, there are a few complications.Gas and electric stoves light instantly, produceno waste, require no storage space for fuel andare not subject to smoke-control legislation.Logs, on the other hand, need a little moreforethought. In some parts of the country, logscan only be burned in specially certifiedclean-burn appliances (visit the Defra websiteat http://smokecontrol.defra.gov.uk for detailsof restricted areas and approved products).

Then there’s the question of where to buyand how to store the fuel. ‘In rural areas, logsare readily available — sometimes for free —from tree surgeons, saw mills and farmers,’ says

Knox. However, freshly cut green wood needs tobe dried or ‘seasoned’ to produce a clean andefficient burn, so will need to be stored in a dryplace for two years before use.Given that ittakes around 5m3 of wood to run a stove for ayear, a substantial amount of storage space isrequired to make the most of bulk purchases.Ready-to-use kiln-dried logs can be bought inbags but this is an expensive option.Although stoves burn logs more cleanly than

open fires do, there will still be ash to dispose ofplus the bother of lighting the fire andremembering to feed it with logs. The thoughtof having to get up in the freezing cold on awinter’s morning to light the fire is probably themain reason why most stoves are used forsupplementary or ‘shoulder season’ heatingrather than as the sole heat source for a home. However, a really efficient stove, such as

those from Tonwerk available at AngliaFireplaces, can prove to be very effective heatersfor well-insulated modern homes, while anincreasing number of manufacturers makestoves that also heat water.GrahamVialls, managing director of

ECO DESIGN | 45

www.idfxmagazine.com | October 2010

By 2016, all new homes will have tobe zero carbon and building regulations aretightening to ensure energy and waterefficiency are improved and carbon emissionsreduced in the UK’s housing stock. Thesechanges are already creating new businessopportunities for design professionals asproducts and services are launched, old housesare upgraded and new homes are built.

But huge challenges remain for architectsand interior designers. As well as needing tokeep track of new regulations and productdevelopment, the changes require upskilling inenvironmentally responsible design. Thenthere’s knowing where to sourceenvironmentally friendly products —separating the genuine from the ‘greenwash’can prove tricky. How to incorporatesustainable products and systems into homesis another issue. This is particularly true ofretrofit projects, where properties are eitherlisted or have historic features that the ownerwants to retain. In all cases, clients have to bebriefed about the choices they face andcompromises then have to be reached, if not

on the level of efficiency then on the aestheticappeal of the end product.

Here we talk to three design companiesthat have put sustainability at the heart ofwhat they do and have sought various ways toaddress these challenges.

Heath DesignDesigner, writer and TV presenter OliverHeath set up Heath Design in 2005 to createbeautiful designs with minimum impact onthe environment. ‘Sustainability has grabbedhold of architecture but its impact is muchsmaller on the interior designer,’ he says.

Heath’s interest in sustainable designstretches back to 1998, when he set up hisfirst design practice, Blustin Heath Design. His latest book, Urban Eco Chic, promotes thebalance of technology, nature and vintage tocreate functional, sustainable dwellings thatare also beautiful and aspirational homes.‘I have plenty of books on my shelf about howto make a “box” more efficient but not aboutthe psychology behind sustainable homes,’he comments.

Heath may be at the cutting edge ofsustainable design but he relies on a numberof sources to keep him informed and inspired.‘I talk to BRE [the Building ResearchEstablishment], the Energy Saving Trust andWrap [theWaste and Resources ActionProgramme] on a regular basis’, he says.

He also gets ideas from magazines and thearchitectural journals and attends shows, such as 100% Design.

When it comes to sourcing products, thereis one place he cannot praise highly enough.‘Advisory company Scin is a brilliant resourcefor designers and it’s increasingly being askedto find sustainable materials,’ he says.

Heath points out that for all the interest insustainable design, it is still very much adeveloping market that cannot yet competewith the traditional ways of designing andrefurbishing: ‘We have to bear that in mind.So prices are higher and there is less choice.’

Heath is also aware of the compromises wewill have to make if we are going to embracemore sustainable homes. He’s just givenhis own 1960s home in Brighton a green

makeover, which took a year of planning andsix months to build, cost £100,000 and yetonly marginally increased the usable space.

‘A lot of designers are keen to promotesustainable architecture in buildings and theclients seem to want it but it’s quickly ruledout when they want more space,’ he says. ‘Wetook out all the windows, heating, electricsand floors, had the walls insulated and sealedwhole joints. I increased the usable space byconverting my garage into a kitchen but Ispent most of the money making my home abetter space within the existing footprint.’

Living In SpaceA ‘one-stop-shop’ for those looking for aninitial concept right through to completion,London-based Living In Space has positioneditself squarely in the eco design bracket. Thepractice is underpinned by a ‘green living’philosophy that includes sourcing its ownelectricity from renewable sources. It has evenbuilt up a library of eco-friendly products andservices, ranging from sustainably sourcedfurniture to renewable energy installations.

Director Ryan Kohn, who joined Living InSpace three years ago after working in

property development, is the driving forcebehind the company’s green designcredentials. He says it’s not only important tokeep abreast of latest green buildingdevelopments and regulations, but to keep upwith the latest products and trends by readingand networking — and not just within thedesign and building sectors.

‘We go to [informal networking event]Green Drinks once a month,’ he says. ‘It isalways good to cross over with otherindustries because of the work we do inpeople’s homes,’ says Kohn.

Kohn has no formal training inenvironmentally sustainable design but hasgained his knowledge from books, magazines, websites and seminars, making it his businessto find out what there is to know.

For anything to do with buildingregulations, he goes straight to thegovernment’s Planning Portal. For moregeneral literature on sustainable building, herecommends Zed Factory’s Zed Book and TheGreen Guide. For places to go, he suggestsBRE and the Energy Saving Trust but he alsorecommends trade shows and says there is nobetter place to start than at London’s

Ecobuild, the largest sustainable builtenvironment exhibition in Europe.

For good all-round information, Kohnsuggests joining the UK Green BuildingCouncil. ‘You pay a subscription but its 100per cent worthwhile. It does very good workon sustainability in the home. It has stands attrade shows, seminars and offers training. It’sthe best we’ve got in the UK,’ he says.

The biggest difficulty with being green, according to Kohn, is establishing what itreally means. ‘That word “green” has a broadmeaning,’ he says. ‘How green is green? Howgreen do clients want their homes to be? Andhow green is green in terms of suppliers?’

Living In Space has attempted to clarifysome of these issues by developing aSustainable Refurbishment Report. Muchmore detailed than an Energy PerformanceCertificate, this 40-page document evaluatesthe existing energy of the home and how toimprove on it. ‘It goes through the options, such as insulation, triple glazing andrenewable energy and provides a costing, setsout how much CO2 will be saved and statesthe payback period,’ explains Kohn.

The process enables Living In Space todevise bespoke solutions to individualsustainable design problems, which in thecase of a listed building is an absolute must, says Kohn. ‘You need to be very sensitive. There are many conservation areas and Iwould recommend getting in listed specialistsif you are dealing with a listed buildingbecause you could be prosecuted,’ he explains.

When refurbishing a grade II listed,five-bedroom house in Hampstead, Living InSpace had to redesign the conservatory toenable the roof to carry solar PV panels.

Another problem with green design, according to Kohn, is the choice of sustainableproducts on offer — and nowhere does he seethis more than at the high end of sustainablefurniture products. ‘Some companies, such asDavid Edwards, are making strides but thereis still a lack of really high-end pieces thatare sustainable.’

Kohn says suppliers are missing a trickhere. ‘Now it’s a great story but in 20 years’time, everyone will be doing it,’ he says.

exhibition in London, although he warns thelatter has been ‘flooded’ with products thatare merely ‘greenwash’.

When it comes to sourcing sustainableproducts,Wilburn says building merchantssuch as Jewsons and Bradfords are makingstrides but adds that the choice is ‘nowherenear as good as it could be and you need tosearch hard for products that aren’t run of themill’ and that are truly sustainable.

‘These products are just like anycommodity so suppliers will “expand” thetruth to make them more appealing and mostarchitects don’t have time to check,’ he says.

The Green Guide does offer help in thisarea butWilburn says it’s a case of buildingup a trusted network of suppliers that offerunusual and innovative products, fromrammed-earth materials to insulationand green roofing.

HPW’s own network of suppliers hasserved it well on sustainable projects. Thecompany recently refurbished a 46m2 Yorkstone barn conversion near Harrogate inNorth Yorkshire. After carrying out dynamicthermal modelling of the building, HPWrecommended super-insulating the stoneproperty using an internal 10m-thick‘multifoil’ plasterboard — a materialdeveloped by NASA — to meet the spacelimitations of the family home. Under-floorheating powered by a ground source heatpump was designed to replace an antiquatedcentral-heating system powered by oil.

Wilburn describes the refurbishment as a‘thermal delight’. He is keen to point out thatreducing a building’s energy requirementshould be the starting point of anysustainable building design. ‘Super-insulatethe building first then think about renewableenergy systems,’ he says. But he also warnsthat adopting a generic approach tosustainable design is ‘enormously dangerous. There is no single solution, everything has tobe site specific.’Louise Bateman is the editor ofwww.greenwisebusiness.co.uk, a daily online newsand information service that helps businessesmove to a low-carbon economy

HPWEstablished in 1986 from offices inSouthampton, HPW operates in thecommercial and residential sector, providingindustry-leading sustainable architectureand interior design.

Creative director GaryWilburn has justcompleted an Msc in sustainable buildingperformance and design at Oxford BrookesUniversity. He believes formal training isgoing to be required not just at theprofessional level but at all levels of theconstruction industry in order to future-proofUK homes and businesses. ‘We need toeducate everyone from the architect anddesigner to those laying the bricks and diggingthe trenches. It’s going to require a massiveeffort and commitment,’ he says.

As well as investing in their own education, though, he believes the design professionalsalso need to be willing to share informationwith one another.Wilburn is the chairman ofthe Sustainable Construction Network forHampshire and the Isle of Wight. The networkkeeps him updated on the latest buildingregulations and sustainable developments butit also demands an open-minded approach tonetworking. ‘We collaborate and choose toshare information,’ Wilburn says. ‘It’s veryeasy to be nervous about sharing learning butif we want to be exemplary we need to shareour information.’

For inspiration on product development,Wilburn recommends lots of travelling —preferably overseas. ‘You need to attendexhibitions and travel to the continent,’he insists. When it comes to renewable energysystems,Wilburn believes we have a lot tolearn from Germany,Austria and Switzerland. To see good examples of the Passivhausconstruction standard for buildings, herecommends visiting Holland and Belgium, while Sweden’s Hammarby, a district southof Stockholm that houses 20,000 peoplecompletely self-sustainably, he describesas ‘a must see’.

Closer to home,Wilburn recommends theCentre for Alternative Technology (CAT) nearMachynlleth in northWales and the Ecobuild

Sometimes it is planned and sometimesit happens organically. For designer HelenGreen, the expansion of her interior designbusiness from residential work to luxury hotels, spas and super yachts was a naturalprogression. ‘From the outset, our portfoliofocused on high-net-worth private domesticclients,’ she says. The success of those projectsmeant her clients returned to her for theirsecond homes and yachts, while hoteliers suchas the Maybourne Group, owner of the BerkeleyHotel, admired Green’s residential interiors andcommissioned her to design its suites to movethem away from the archetypal hotel look.

Someone else who experienced a similarlynatural development was Kamini Ezralow of

Intarya. ‘Very simply, a client asked us whetherwe would design a yacht,’ she recalls. ‘The clienthad seen some of our work, liked our style andwanted their yacht to have a residential feel sothey were looking outside the normal list ofyacht designers.’ The yacht,Celestial Hope, wascompleted in 2009. It has picked up fourinternational awards and prompted the creationof Intarya’s Life on Board division.

While hotel and yacht design are a naturalprogression from interiors,Green’s HG Livingfurniture packages came about after shespotted an opportunity. ‘The packages are adirect response to changes in the economicenvironment,’ she says. Not only are theycompetitively priced, they can be installed

rapidly in sales and rental investmentproperties. Zoe Egerton of EL Interiors has alsospotted an opportunity to provide services tothe property market. ‘I think the recession hasencouraged most of us to think aboutdiversifying,’ she says. EL Interiors offers homestaging to developers keen to sell or let theirproperties to maximize income. ‘It might be assimple as moving furniture around anddecluttering or it could involve designing anentirely new interior scheme,’ she says.Whilethis line of work has provided a useful source ofincome, fitting around longer-term and largerprojects, Egerton offers a warning. ‘Be awarethat it takes time to get a “dress to sell” servicegoing: you have to be persistent, especially inthe current market,’ she says.

Another example of successful businessexpansion is Living in Space’s environmentallyfriendly design service, which is offered toeco-conscious clients. ‘It came about becauseit’s something I feel passionate about and isalso a way of driving the business forward,’explains Ryan Kohn, director of the company.‘It opens up another avenue and allows us togrow.’ Kohn says the venture has beensuccessful, judging by the number of clientswho seek out the company specifically for itsexpertise in this area. Kohn is now consideringdeveloping Living in Space’s own eco housesand is looking for opportunities to purchaseland around London.

And what do clients, such as hoteliers andproperty developers, look for whencommissioning an interior designer? Arnaud deSaint Exupéry of Andaz Liverpool Street, one ofHyatt’s boutique hotels, says: ‘We focus ondelivering a personal and uncomplicated servicebut in a sophisticated way, which is crucial forthe designers we work with to understand.A

hotel is a very complex structure so it isimportant to understand the service industryand how a hotel functions.’ Pierre-Yves Rochon, who has designed some of the world’s mostluxurious hotels, including the newlyrefurbished Savoy, says: ‘I approach eachproject with a fresh perspective, taking intoconsideration the location, the exteriorarchitecture, the owner and, of course, the hotelbrand and what guests would expect from it.’

Paul Hogarth, head of residential atQuintain Estates and Development, looks tointerior designers to create memorable showhomes. ‘People will go home after seeing ourproperty and perhaps one or two others. It’simportant that they remember ours,’ he says.‘A show home is an aspirational marketing tool:it must be representative of the lifestyle andappropriate to the market we’re trying to attractso it needs to be exciting and cutting edge.’

For a new scheme,Hogarth will give hisinterior designers a brief, look for a storyboardpresentation, take up references and askdetailed questions about how they work withsubcontractors to a timetabled programme.‘Strong creative ideas are essential,’ he says.Martin Hodgson of Tusk Developments agrees.‘If you want a premium price for your property, you’ve got to make people fall in love with it.That’s about interior design with individuality, created with your buyer in mind,’ he says.

So how do interior designers adapt theirbusinesses to ensure their expansion into newmarket sectors is viable? To gear up herbusiness to deal with its expanding markets,Green created a department of architecturaldesigners to compliment her interior designservices. ‘We found we were becomingincreasingly involved in the design andspecification of hard interior finishes,

bathrooms and kitchens for many of ourprojects,’ she explains, ‘so we needed a teamwith experience of working alongside architects, mechanical and electrical consultants, lightingdesigners,AV suppliers and contractorsthroughout. Their input is particularly valuableat an early stage, working up to andcommenting on concept designs for tender.’

Ezralow admits that being asked to tacklethe entire redesign of a yacht — from itspanelling, marble surfaces and ironmongery totackling weight restrictions and learning how tocarve out as much space as possible from theheavy amounts of piping and ducting —involved a steep learning curve. But the projectalso had elements that were similar to herresidential work. ‘Ultimately, it’s all about spacetransformation.Whether this is in the air, onthe water or in a hotel, our skills are relevant,’she says. Now Intarya has two strands to itsbusiness and there may soon be a third. ‘We’venow been approached to do a hotel,’ she says.

Kohn believes extensive and effectiveresearch is the key to the success of any newventure. ‘You must be confident that you candeliver,’ he says. ‘You have to know what you’retalking about or you’ll get found out.’

Get it right and there are more yetopportunities, advises Green. ‘We’ve alsolaunched a fabric collection, which naturallycomplements our interior design service.Amove into the consumer market with asumptuous collection of soft furnishings couldbe next,’ she says. ‘The sky’s the limit!’

SIX TIPS FROM MANAGEMENTCONSULTANT RACHEL SMART

HOW TO EXPAND INTO A NEWMARKET

1 Design is not just about style,it is about understanding thebrief and presenting solidsolutions. Every sector will havea different brief so a hotel will beabout brand and capacity whilean office developer will beinterested in maximizing thefloor area. Understand therequirements of your potentialnew sector.2 Do your research.Make visitsto completed projects in thatmarket and understand how andwhy they are successful. Reviewcase studies, read books andvisit websites.3 Research industry standards, building regulations andspecification guidelines or teamup with a specialist consultant. You need to be aware of bestpractice, whether it relates toweight restrictions on a yacht or

private jet or fire regulations in ahotel or restaurant.4How can you show yourcredentials to a new client if youhaven’t done that type of workbefore? Use your experience andresearch to tune your portfolio todemonstrate how a domesticbedroom design might beadapted for a hotel or to showhow you have reconfigured ahouse to enhance its space.5 Build up contacts relevant tothe new sector — includingspecialist suppliers — bystudying magazines, journals andwebsites and by talking to yourexisting network of specialists.6 Be patient and listen — there’sa lot to learn.Smart runs professional practicecourses at the British Institute ofInterior Design. www.rachelsmart.comwww.biid.org.uk

‘Large bedrooms give you a free rein withdesign ideas but it’s surprising how often

large expanses of space in the centre of a roomcan look terrible. The bed should always be the

focal point of the room so a dramatic headboard isone way of making it a feature.Combined

bedrooms and bathrooms are a big trend at themoment so it is important to balance the design

of the room, including both the bed and aluxurious freestanding bath.’

‘It’s important to divide a verylarge bedroom into areas fordifferent functions, including thebed area, perhaps two sofas forreading or watching TV, and adesk or dressing table area. This ismuch cosier and stops the roomfrom seeming cold and empty. Iwork with colour and pattern a lotbut this is one room where I mightuse neutrals if I were asked. If you

start putting lots of pattern in avery large space, it can look messy.A bedroom needs to be calming —too much going on isn’t relaxing. Alarge bed, possibly a modern fourposter if the ceiling is high, createsa focal point. A lot of people arescared of using over-sized piecesbut often they create grandeur andfill the room, giving it a glamorousfeel.’ www.charlottecrosland.com

‘Exercise restraint. Don’t be tempted to fillthe space — the last thing you put in, you

take away. The thing about large spaces is thatyou have a distance from which to view things sosave your best pieces for the biggest rooms. And,while there is practicality to be had from built-instorage, you need to be clever with it so the roomdoesn’t look like a joinery workshop. I like to

create ‘pods’ for sleeping, sitting and writing tocreate intimacy in a large room. And eacharea is lit separately. The sitting areamight have a pair of sofas and a coffeetable with reading lights while thewriting area will have a desk.’

Sandra Drechsler

‘There tends to be a big expanse of wall behind the bed. Everyonedoes tall headboards so, instead,we often upholster the wall as away of adding extra luxury. Don’t forget that, if the wall isupholstered up to the ceiling, the bedside lamps need to be tall tosuit the scale and small bedside tables look absurd beside a 6ft or7ft bed. Instead, I might go for one chest of drawers at 1m wide onone side of the bed and another at 60cm wide on the other side.Too balanced a set of bedside tables can look boring. His-and-hersdressing rooms would be my choice for storage but, if that’s notpossible, the answer might be a pair of tall armoires. Extra largerooms need large-scale pieces so that means we often have to gobespoke. For dressing tables I prefer quite a simple design, perhapswith a slim drawer in the middle for cosmetics and jewellery and afold-up mirror, which looks modern and uncluttered.’www.taylorhowes.co.uk

‘Of course, it all completely depends onwho the room is for but one thing I have

noticed is that people do tend to treat a smallbedroom with small things, which just makes

the room seem even smaller. I wouldn’t be scaredabout using big pieces in a small bedroom — Iwould just use fewer of them. I would then usecolour and pattern to create an interesting andcosy room rather than use neutrals, which canseem gloomy or dull. It’s much better to create

a room full of atmosphere so you forgetabout the fact it is rather small.’

Sandra Drechsler

‘Scale is very important: you don’t wantanything too big to overpower the scheme. But Ioften like to be bold with colour in small rooms, which are often the last priority and can berather disappointing. To detract from the sizeof the room, I try to create a surprise, whichmight involve a feature wall, a photographicwall, some funky, colourful bed linen or anamazing piece of art. For storage, I mightinclude a boldly lacquered chest of drawers in astrong colour but I wouldn’t be tempted tosquash in too much furniture or the room willappear even smaller.’

Greg Kinsella

‘Dark feature walls and bulky furniture arecomplete no-nos for petite rooms. I prefer tokeep the walls and floors light, with neutralhues to enhance the feeling of space, and touse well-placed mirrors opposite thewindow to give the sense of more space. I likemulti-functional furniture to provide storageand sometimes I might inject some colour withbright bedspreads and curtains or with a boldbedside table to give the room a lift. But somuch depends on the individual space in theindividual property and how the client will beusing it.As a designer, I don’t really believethere are too many hard and fast rules.’

Justin Van Breda

‘I like to use intense colour, mixed materials and beautifully softambient lighting to create an inner shell so that you focus on the objects, curtains, fabrics and finishes before you realise it’s a tiny space. I alsothink that using overscale, organic-shaped objects adds fun and drawsthe eye away from the square, straight lines of a small bedroom.Concealed lighting does not take up space but throws light around theroom as well as creating all-essential depth. So does careful windowdressing, such as using a Roman blind, a linen sheer curtain and thenheavier drapes.’

Charlotte Crosland

‘Basement bedrooms are so tricky.Youcan never really make a basement lighter

than it is, so painting it all in neutrals is notthe answer. I prefer to bring in really soft coloursto add warmth and cosiness, so I might use pinksand faded floral linens, for example, and contrastthem with a dark carpet for a sharp finish. I like to

use lots of lamps in all bedrooms, includingbasement ones, to create a warm glow andI like wall-mounted bedside lights on arms,

which can be moved keep the bedsidetable clear for books.’

Sandra Drechsler

‘Lighting is key — it needs to be very good in abasement bedroom. The more low-voltagedownlighters, the better. And keep thedecorating as light as possible. For the walls, Imight choose some sand-coloured grass paperwith a metallic sheen for its light-reflectivequalities. It’s the same thing with curtains andblinds — keep them very light and soft. For thebed, choose sumptuous fabrics such as silk, velvet, mohair and cashmere in soothingcolours to enhance the luxurious feel. And I’ddefinitely consider deep under-bed storage.’

Greg Kinsella

‘The key is to project enough light around theroom so that the space feels neither dark nordingy.Cream walls and varnished woodenflooring are a good combination in spaces thatlack natural light because they open up theroom and I like to use light and airy fabrics, such as sheers or printed sheers.Mirrors, varnished floors, light-coloured and pearlizedwall coverings, glass tiles and polished concreteare all good ways of encouraging reflection andincreasing the sense of brightness, which isenhanced by a careful lighting scheme.’

Justin Van Breda

‘Generally, basements are quite gloomy and cold so you want to warmthem up with lighter, warmer colours, not greys and darks.A basementbedroom in England often has a bay window so it’s good to accentuatethe architecture with sheer drapes and perhaps a bijou desk and chair tocreate a striking focal point.Often the ceiling isn’t particularly high in abasement bedroom so you might want to create a sense of height byusing a panel above the bed, upholstered in fabric with vertical stripes. And don’t forget high or raised beds, which can be dressed to look like afabulous cake in the middle of the room.’

This Ibizan villa boasts six ensuite bedrooms, which owe their streamlined good looks toan ingenious use of polished concrete

WORDS CAROLINE EDNIEPHOTOGRAPHY JAMES SILVERMAN

Catalan architect Jaime Serra ofAtlant del Vent took his design cuesfrom the local farmhouse traditionwhen creating Casa Jondal, a familyhome in rural Ibiza — and then added acrisp, contemporary twist. The house boasts six ensuite

bedrooms and the palette of materialshas been kept spare yet sumptuous.Adesign coup is the extensive use ofpolished concrete, not just for structuralelements such as walls but for mainfurniture pieces. This reduces clutter, resulting in a streamlined and holisticlook.Mattress platforms, storageshelves and sunken bathtubs have been

cast in-situ, appearing as if they havebeen carved out of the hillside.Set against this smooth, reflective

cement backdrop and providing ananchor to the light, transparent andfloating style of the house is a series ofrobust furniture pieces and elementalworks of art from Bali — a favouritetravel destination of the home’s owner.A bamboo theme features prominentlyand a collection of lava stone figurativesculptures, chosen for their ‘strengthand presence’, add another eastern twistto the modern Ibizan villa, withreclining figures giving the masterbedroom an exotic focus.

HHe wore a purple cravat, she worepurple and yellow. These details gaveRebecca James of Interior Desires a firstindication of her new clients’ flamboyanttastes. ‘They are a very stylish andcharismatic couple, with four daughtersand a son, who look like they’ve juststepped out of the pages of Vogue so Iknew this was going to be an interestingproject,’ says James.

The prospect of designing the five-storey Georgian townhouse incentral London was very tempting toJames, despite the restrictions she knewwould be placed on any structuralalterations to the listed property. ‘I am avery colourful designer,’ she says. ‘I’mquite daring and really like to get peopleengaged in a room so that they don’twant to leave.’ After inviting James totheir homes abroad and then visiting the

Sanderson Hotel, Sketch and the Ritztogether, James’ clients gave her only afew guidelines before heading backoverseas. ‘They told me they wanted avery English home with a “tea partyvibe” but nothing old and stuffy,’explains James. ‘And the only stipulation they gave for the wholescheme was that the house had to have ayellow-and-turquoise padded sofa.’

But before James could seriouslycontemplate the sofa possibilities, shefirst had to rethink the nine-bedroomhouse and get rid of its stuffyatmosphere and tired decor. Buildingrestrictions meant she was unable totouch the structure or the rather datedlift, although she was able to add a two-level extension at the rear of theproperty to increase the size of thekitchen and create a basement entrance

area for staff. Responding to her clients’ tea party

suggestion, James then began to developan imaginative colour scheme for thehouse. ‘I wanted to create a sort of madand colourful elegance, a little like Alicein Wonderland,’ she explains. ‘It’sdesigned to feel joyful as well asluxurious. I’m so bored of bland and, anyway, if I’d given my clients cream, they’d have thought it way too boring.’

So, back to that yellow-and-turquoisesofa, the starting point for the sittingroom. ‘I just couldn’t get it quite right,’says James, frankly. ‘But then I realizedwhat I was doing wrong: I was being tootentative.’ So she added a deliciousshade of rose pink to the turquoise andyellow of the dramatically curved sofa, which was so large it had to be built onsite. She then commissioned a polished

plaster wall with a rose-colouredgold-leaf motif of delicate blossom cutinto its surface. ‘The blossom added asense of a Japanese tea room andbalanced the crazy colours,’ she says.

More bold use of colour continuesupstairs, sometimes used contrastingly— as in the eldest daughter’s bedroomwith its combination of fuschia pink, emerald green and azure blue— or toneon tone,as in the master bedroomwithits shades of purple. ‘I love to do tone ontone because it gives depth and interestand stops a room seeming flat,’ Jamesexplains. All the fabrics in the house aresilk, with the occasional use of velvet, leather and silk carpet, designed to addsubtle sheen as well as imbue the homewith a deep sense of luxury.

On the top floor, James has created ahotel-like suite.A bespoke raised bed hasits own staircase constructed of boxesfronted with panels of pink silk with

lights hidden behind, designed to createa fun space for the 11-year-old youngestdaughter.Opposite is a Japanese-inspired suite of rooms for anotherdaughter.Details include sliding glazeddoors and a polished chrome and blackglass bath and vanity unit, which had tobe lifted through the house on a pulley.‘I remember standing at the bottom ofthe house, watching the bath suspendedin mid-air and wondering how I wouldget a £20,000 replacement if theydropped it,’ she laughs.

James,a former model, says herfashion background informs her designs.‘I think it taught me that when you’redoing something slightly out of theordinary, it is essential that you do notpanic for fear that it’s too bold.Youmustn’t try to tame it, otherwise it canend up being cheap and nasty,’ she says.‘Dare to be unique and different — that’swhat will make it classy.’

BBelgium design companyMontagna Lunga have created a grownup version of the girly apartment in thisone floor, one bedroom flat in theLimburg Province. There may not bepink suede or fluffy cushions butallowances have been made for shoespace and the use of subtle sparkles anddiamond motifs. As designer BrigitteVanzonhoven says: ‘Diamonds are agirl’s best friend, no?’ talking about thescheme she has created for the Italianclient. ‘Her brief was to create a brightmodern apartment, full of colour butwith a modest budget,’ Vanzonhovenexplains. With the empty new build presented tothe team without furniture, finishes oreven kitchen or bathroom MontagnaLunga looked to the client’s personalityfor inspiration. ‘ She is fresh and full oflife and is also travels a lot for both workand pleasure so we reflected that in theapartment , we wanted that feeling ofstepping into a hotel suite in a design

conscious hotel, twinned with the feelingof coming home. Also,we unfortunatelylive in a country that does not have a lotof sun so wewant to create a “sunny”apartment.’

So the team kept the basic floor planof the 77m 2 apartment the same butadded in the kitchen and bathroomelement and the all important specialarea for shoes within the dressing room, which is almost the same size as thebedroom itself and bigger than thebathroom. The kitchen is open plan outonto the living space; both have stainedoak floors created with thin strips ofwood to give that graphic feel. It is in thekitchen where the diamond shaped walltextures come in to play, where thesplash back is clad with Porcelonasa’sMosaicoAcero pyramid shaped metallictiles. This reflective surface is repeatedwith theVerner Panton Pantop pendantswith brushed aluminium shades.

The graphic element comes back inthe eye-catching, striped wallpaper at

one end of the living room. The paper, fromHooked onWalls, has been appliedhorizontally to create an illusion of alonger more spacious room. ‘Wewantedto evoke a slightly retro look,’ saysVanzonhoven, of the brown andturquoise tones used in this areas colourscheme. This can also be seen in thelocally sources high gloss cabinet andrug fromMatakie. ‘We brought in artfrom several time periods too, some oldMasters fromChagall andModiglianibought at auction with the client andthen more modern sculptural piecesfrom Stan Henson.’

Vintage style wallpaper designs get asecond appearance in the bathroomwhich has a line drawn floral motif, fromSanderson, which continues up onto theceiling and is again reflected in themirror for a the effect of full coverage.Allsanitary ware is byGrohe and the crystalspotlight is fromAxo.

Much of the bedroom is neutral, withthe headboard an extension of the oak

panelled flooring and the custommadestorage in white melamine.HoweverMontagna Lungawanted to pack apunchwith the bespoke, Love-emblazoned, canvas behind the bedwhich they created themselves. ‘Thevintage tones were used again, but wejust had to have the message there forour client,’ describesVanzonhoven onthe typography, ‘because wewant awhole lot of love going on there if youknowwhat I mean,’ she laughs!

So a definite grown up girlie finish tothis retro but contemporary, warm butfresh apartment in Limburg.AndMontagna Lunga is extremely pleasedwith the result, as is the client, ‘Wealways, always try to create anenvironment the client feels both greatand comfortable in and she has told uswe have succeeded. This projectexceeded our expectations, it is fresherand more exciting than the originalplans – but nowwe are bragging, but wecan’t help it!’

THEATRICAL SPACEThe kitchen featuresstainless steel units, anoakveneer splash backand appliances such asKuppersbusch ovens.Thecushions spell out thename of a famous muppet

FFind me a person that doesn’t lovethe idea of a loft,’ asks Tara Bernerd, speaking on Target Living’s latest projectfor Londonewcastle residentialdevelopers, The Henson – so calledbecause of its previous incarnation asthe London Muppet Factory for The JimHenson Company. ‘The wholeassociation to loft living conjures upTribeca, New York, Robert de Niro, brickwalls, sexy open plan space – yet thereare very few original loft spaces left. Forme they are the ultimate in open planliving,’ says Bernerd, ‘ Yet despite suchpersonality, many are intimidated byfilling these dramatic spaces andensuring an interesting, liveable home iscreated is entirely about space planningwithin, creating zones and ensuringfurniture reflects this language.’

And of course Target Living waseager to take up the challenge. As well ascreating all the design for whole sixstory canal-side building, which houses46 private apartments, and the interiorarchitecture (the places was completedgutted and internal floors restructured),they have created the ‘icing on the cake’- the one bedroom show flat. The team, understandably wanted to maintain thewarehouse feel of both the building andthis apartment, given the novel history

of the place, so have exposed the originalbrick walls and left many materials suchas the concrete slab visible at certainpoints on the ceiling.

The open plan living and kitchendining area the walls which have beenskimmed and finished in a white crisppaint and flooring throughout is naturalwide oiled oak floor, to give a light, airyfeel. This is impacted by the full heightsliding glass doors to the terrace andrecessed low-energy spots, part of theLutron lighting system. But for cosinessthere are traditional, industrial-stylecast iron radiators in gunmetal grey ineach room. The kitchen carries on theindustrial feel with an island unitfinished in raw concrete.

Moving on to the bedroom, these havea plusher feel with dark navyupholstered headboards and a leatherclad built-in wardrobe. The show flat’sbathroom has large grey porcelain tilescovering the floor and walls, with asmoked glass shower-screen. The oakveneer cabinetry with inlaid mirrorprovides honey coloured storage. Theshowflat’s style has definitely succeededin achieving something very sought afterand very difficult to achieve - a mixtureof warehouse chic with an overall feelthat is warm and welcoming.

The influence of heritage isstrong, Asian artwork abounds referencing herhusband’s Chinese childhood and classicalGustavian clean, lines are also a feature, channelled from her own Swedish ancestry.Scott also wanted to restore many historicalfeatures that had been lost in previousownership and began by researching museumhomes in Rhode Island, and has replicatedmany features she found there such as skirtingsand plaster ceiling mouldings. Smaller detailsfrom these houses also fixated Scott, ‘I noticedthe toggle light switches at the Breakers all hadbrass plate hand engravings with thedescription of their purpose. I could not get thatdetail out of my mind and went on a search fororiginal switches,’ she describes. She later foundwhat she was looking for at Mohawk Electric, inNew York City, and bought out the entire stock!Scott then brought in a sign fabricator toengrave custom switch plates to complete thelook. ‘I also made custom dimming knobs out ofantique ceramic nurse’s call knobs’, continuesScott, ‘and sourced antique hardware andsanitary fittings that could convincingly poseas original.’ This fastidious restoration job, combined with bespoke pieces made by Scottand her team as well as sentimental piecescertainly make this house a home.

PRACTICE PROFILE | 121

Interior designer Charlie Grieg is one of thenames to watch in the world of sustainablehousing. After a successful career in fashionretail, she moved into property 15 years ago andhas built up an impressive portfolio ofresidential projects for clients such as formerSpice Girl Emma Bunton. Greig and her teamof three designers, based in her studio in north-west London, began to focus on eco homes justover a year ago and have created an off-the-shelf, modular housing solution called CubHomes. It has already been certified toSustainability Code Level 5 and is covered bythe National House-Building Council’sBuilding Control Type Approval, somethingthat will be on developers’ minds next Octoberwhen every new building will have to comply toCode Level 4.

‘When I began work on creating my ownhome, I struggled so hard to add in all thesustainable factors I wanted and needed,’ saysGreig. ‘I began to see that creating your ownbespoke environment from scratch would bethe answer, which led me to the conclusion thatmodular is the building method of the future. This is what I have applied to Cub Homes.’

This capsule-type approach means thebuilding process takes 12 to 16 weeks and has afixed price — ‘a huge plus in an economically

unstable world and one where builders whackon an extra 20 per cent when you have no roofon your house,’ says Grieg.

Cub Homes, manufactured exclusively byFutureForm, achieve that hard-to-reach CodeLevel 5 by being built modularly off site, whichreduced construction waste by 90 per cent, before being craned in. This keeps its carbonfootprint to a minimum. Only ForestStewardship Council-approved timber is usedand the frame itself is 65 per cent recycledsteel. High acoustic and thermal installationsystems prevent heat loss and noise pollution, while argon gas-sealed windows are used, eliminating virtually all drafts. Interior fittings, with various packages ranging from Ikea toBoConcept, are also totally eco conscious withsurfaces and worktops made of 100 per centrecycled and recyclable glass, ceramics andmirrors. All appliances are A/A+ rated and allhomes comply with a daily water use of 80l perperson per day — achieved through theinstallation of flow restrictors in all taps andshowers — while rain water is harvested.

Grieg has 70 meetings set out for the nextsix months with housing associations, privateclients and property developers to roll out 100homes over the next year, one of which is ondisplay in the BRE’s (Environmental

in the UK, Grieg has developed a modularhousing solution for disaster zones, calledPodPassiv, which is has just received its patentand is being geared up to be sent out as part ofrelief efforts worldwide. Each one is $3000 andis a plastic shell, compact and light for quickand easy shipping, which can be constructed bytwo people in less than three hours and collectsrain water through the roof and walls and isilluminated by solar energy. ‘I just thoughthow can I apply my experience and knowledgeto provide an easy effective shelter in these lifethreatening situations, and created a solution,’describes Grieg, ‘It’s a simple design but we aregoing down all the right channels to have allthe right talks with all the right people so whatwe are doing is going to make a difference.’

The massively important and massivelyhectic schedule sounds like a lot to handle, ‘ oheveryday is a 12 hour day,’ says Grieg, ‘ Settingup meetings, going to them, creatingpresentations and working on seminars, selling my own property portfolio to fund mywork -It’s all go.’ And this afternoon she isplanning to visit the current exhibition at theSaatchi Gallery, ‘just because it’s a sunny day.’I think we can allow her that.

QUICK THINKINGA two-week course promises to give designers the perfectintroduction to sustainability in the built environment

Sustainability is becoming part ofthe mainstream business agendaso whether they are designinghomes, getting to grips with newlegislation and regulation, sourcingproducts and materials or talkingto clients and stakeholders, designprofessionals need to get to gripswith this new business model.

With this in mind, the UKGreen Building Council (UK-GBC)has launched An Introduction toSustainability in the BuiltEnvironment, a foundation courseaimed at anyone working in theproperty and construction sector.

‘This is sheep-dipping insustainability,’ says Paul King, chief executive of UK-GBC.‘Anybody can get a quick intro tosustainability in eight hours.’

Designed in partnership withthe College of Estate Management, the two-week course includes aweb forum and online interactionwith tutors. Subjects coveredinclude regulation and legislation, climate change, water use, responsible sourcing of materialsand the impact on biodiversity. It

also provides guidance on technicalsolutions and stakeholdermanagement.Although not aformal qualification, it is in theprocess of becoming certifiedmaterial for continuingprofessional development.

The course is part of Step(Sustainability Training andEducation Programme), a newinitiative from UK-GBC thataims to ‘bridge the gaps’ insustainability training.

So why is it relevant to designprofessionals? ‘The whole industryis moving to full transparency,’says Chad Harrell, director ofoperations and businessdevelopment at UK-GBC. ‘Thiscourse helps define a commonlanguage and helps stakeholdersnavigate through the noise tounderstand the importance ofa joined-up approach.’

An Introduction toSustainability in the BuiltEnvironment is booking now andcosts £199 for UK-GBC membersand £249 for non-members.www.step.ukgbc.org

STING IN THE TALEWe treat ourselves to a spa break at the Four Seasons inHampshire on the pretext of research for the London spa project onwhich I am consulting. Although not cheap, the hotel set in andaround a Georgian manor house is a haven of serenity and thetreatments blissful. Unfortunately there is – quite literally – a stingin the tale. On checking out and seling the four-figure bill I amstung by a wasp. I ask for some ice and aer a long delay aconcierge comes with a tiny can of bite spray. She explains thatshe cannot ‘administer’ it due to health and safety and so I mustnot only spray myself, but have £3.75 added to my bill for themedication. I am sorely tempted to ‘administer’ something thatwould definitely breach health and safety regulations, but sele formarching off as brusquely as my throbbing hand allows.

CHILLED OUTTea with an old designer friend in her exquisite Maryleboneboutique. She tells me that the latest must-have for any selfrespecting Russian oligarch is a bar in the media room with builtin mini-fridge for Champagne and a mini-freezer for vodka. Sheexplains that the fridge is no problem but is tearing her hair outtrying to find a mini-freezer and hopes her solution of a shagreenclad freezer drawer will be acceptable, even though the boles willhave to be stored horizontally. Na sdarovie!

WHAT’S THE DRILL?I haul myself out of bed early on Saturday morning to meet aspecialist fier who is to put up an elegant, but not easy to fixcurtain track at a project in the Barbican. He arrives late as he hasbeen collared by a porter who has spoed his power tools. Drillingis apparently strictly verboten at weekends in the Barbican as thenoise travels right up and down the blocks. The fier is an affablechap and, aer long negotiations with the porter, ascertains thatthe neighbours above and below are away so we can take a chanceand proceed. Somehow It doesn’t seem quite as glamorous as theluxury vodka drawers.

VIRTUAL VIRGINSpurred on by my glossy new i-Phone 4, I set up a twier accountand discover a whole world of design tips and gossip. My husband, who considers me a complete Luddite, is highly amused by mymid-life entry into cyber world.

Every now and again in the world of productdesign a new material is developed that challengesdesigners to rethink convention. For up-and-comingFrench designer Elise Gabriel this opportunity camein the form of Zelfo®, a 100 percent biodegradablematerial made from recycled materials with a highcellulose content (such as paper, textiles, hemp andmiscanthus) mixed with water. The patented COREtechnology transforms the cellulose (plant) fibresolution into a hugely ecological and efficient self-binding material. Together with TheGreenFactoryGabriel has developed the Zelfo® Embrace collection,an intelligent application of the properties Zelfo® .

To create the Liga Chair (shown above) dyed greenZelfo® is painted on to the joining sections of thesimple maple frame in the form of a wet cellulosepaste, which dries to bind the wood together. Playingto the strengths of the material, Gabriel aimed todesign pieces that illustrate its ability to holdcomplex, lightweight structures, and use the brightlycoloured aesthetic to draw attention to that feature. Also part of the collection is the Ossos trestle tablecomprising three beech wood legs held together usingonly dyed blue Zelfo®, and the Vélines lampshadesmade in white sheets of Zelfo®, showing thematerials translucency and strength used on its own.

This collaboration was brought about by VIA forits Partnership Project 2010, which gives designersthe opportunity to exchange skills and developproducts with innovative technologies and materialsin tandem with a manufacturer. www.via.frwww.thegreenfactory.fr www.zelfo-technology.com

Inside story After being given someancient bearing timbers from a church belfry,Ashley Cartwright noticed the marks andindications of previous jointing and sought toemphasize the incredibly deep cross section of theoak. So he cut a series of chevrons into theunderside of the bench, using dramatic angles andsharp edges to show off the varied patterns of thenatural knots and grain. Though Cartwright foundthe centuries-old wood tough to work with, itsnuances and patina made it worth the challenge.Within his craft, Cartwright’s priorities are highlyfunctional — he focuses on producing work thatperforms well, is comfortable to use and easy tomaintain. He wants his furniture to be ‘visuallyintriguing’ but always balanced, with eachcommission reacting specifically to the product’senvironment rather than carrying an inherentdesign style. The Chevron Oak Bench is part of ALiving Space, an exhibition curated by Kemp thatruns at CAA until 2 October. www.caa.org.uk

Words JENNY BREWER

‘I love this piece — it looks like dragon’steeth! When I came across Ashley Cartwrightthrough the Contemporary Applied Arts [CAA]gallery, I found his work to be exceptionallyoriginal and beautifully made. Cartwright issuch a fabulous carpenter and designer andhis work is very simple but effective — youalways look twice.

‘Wood is my favourite natural materialbecause it always looks better with age.Throughout its life, wood is always going tolook wonderful and keep changing colour whilemaintaining its solidity and strength. Themark of a good piece is that it fits any setting— be it contemporary or traditional — and

holds its own wherever you place it.At CAAthere are so many pieces that fit thisdescription; the work really speaks for itself.

‘Although he and I work in very differentmedia, I find Cartwright’s work to becomplementary to my own, always addingsomething special. Interior design is acollaboration and it takes many differentelements to make a space come alive. I oftenhave an idea that needs the input of others tomake it multidimensional and Cartwright’swork offers the solution. You can always rely onhim to do something fantastic.’
