Progress in international nuclear safety cooperation

Finland has a lot to give to international nuclear security cooperation. The joint statement published as an outcome of Nuclear Security Summit held in Washing-ton 2016 was based on Finnish national nuclear security detection architecture. Commercialized version of Finnish model makes it possible to export the detection capability outside of the Finnish borders.

23 countries to enhance theirnational nuclear security

Nuclear Security Summit held in Washing-ton last spring aimed to reinforce inter-national cooperation in order to prevent nuclear terrorism. At the summit Finland stressed the importance of national capa-bility to detect threatening situations and to act in these evolving scenarios. Presi-dent Niinistö also stated that the sharing of information and intelligence related to nuclear security is of paramount import-ance in the fight against nuclear terrorism. „No single player can be aware of the over-all situation. Gathering information is of the utmost importance,“ stated Niinistö.At the Nuclear Security summit, 23 countries and INTERPOL together publis-hed a declaration prepared by Finland in which the countries committed that they will develop their radioactive material detection systems so that the illegal use and trafficking of the radioactive materials can be prevented better.

National nuclear security detection architecture in Finland

In order to be better prepared and gain more efficiency different Finnish autho-rities, including Helsinki Police and Re-

scue Department, Defense Forces, Border Guards, Customs and STUK, has developed the National nuclear security detection ar-chitecture inside the REPO project. This Na-tional RN detection architecture describes future detection needs, standard proces-ses, secure information sharing, coopera-tion and maintaining competencies. It also defines optimized instruments, equipment

and communication channels to enhance the detection capabilities. With the existing remote support system in Finland radiation experts from STUK can view, analyze and provide reachback support for radiation measurements per-formed for example by Finnish customs, borderguards or police officers. The radia-tion monitoring in Finnish borders covers transport on rail, road and ship as well as air traffic. Passenger, freight traffic, mail and postal service are also being controlled.Environics has developed in co-operation with few other Finnish companies a com-mercial version of the radiation identifica-tion equipment and reachback system that can be exported to other countries.

Radioactive emergency preparedness in Finland

Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Au-thority, STUK, signed last year a four year framework contract with Environics for ra-

diation detection equipment programme. This programme will provide new genera-tion tools for Finnish Customs and further enhance the emergency preparedness and prevention of illicit trafficking in Finland. New radiation detection equipment con-tract between Environics and STUK inclu-des four different types of measurement devices: Spectroscopic personal radiation detectors (SPRDs), radionuclide identifi-cation devices (RIDs), backpack radiation detectors (BRDs) and spectroscopic radiati-on portal monitors (SRPMs). All equipment included in this program has possibility to transfer data for reachback purposes. These spectrometric devices are able to analyze the measurement results automa-tically and provide threat and radionuclide identification. In unknown situations STUK can provide expert support to the first line officer because the measured spectra from the site are automatically sent to the reachback database for further or imme-diate analysis. In addition STUK also pro-vides customer officer training and expert advice for development of radiation moni-toring at borders.

Environics Oy

Environics Oy, based in Mikkeli, Finland, is among the world leading suppliers of Che-mical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear (CBRN) detection devices and integrated system solutions ranging from personal safety to national security. Environics pro-vides solutions for the whole safeguarding society from civil defense and homeland security to the military.Environics at IDEX: 07-A45bit.ly/radiationreachbackwww.environics.fi

tructors’ coaching skills by pro-viding objective tools to measure shooter

performance. Indeed, the FN Expert measures rifle movement during aiming and triggering, detects the shot, shows the location of both the hit and miss, and shows and analyzes the shooter’s perfor-mance in a simple, graphical and numerical way.The FN Expert can be used everywhere, indoors with simulated shooting distances or outdoors with life-size targets and real shooting distances up to 300m.FN Herstal at IDEX: 07-C17www.fnherstal.com

Lightweight carbon fibre rubber runflat by Tyron

(df) At IDEX Tyron will launch a new light-weight carbon fibre rubber runflat – Ty-ron Carbon-ATR – that achieves up to 50% weight reduction. Tyron runflats have a steel core for strength and a frame to maximise performance of the rubber, the Carbon-ATR replaces this with a carbon fi-bre core, which reduces the weight while maintaining its strength.“Reducing the weight on an armoured vehicle is the goal of all vehicle designer’s

as lower weight means increased mobili-ty,” said Richard Glazebrook, Chief Execu-tive of Tyron Runflat. “We have therefore been working hard exploring the use of new materials to develop this solution as all of our customers are looking at ways to save weight. The Car-bon-ATR achieve this weight re-duction significantly, for example on an 8x8 on 1400R20 tyres, the minimum weight reduction compared to our steel in-sert ATRs so far is 240kg and we expect to improve this still further.”

The new Carbon-ATR will initially be available for both the 1400R20 and

1600R20 tyres where the greatest weight sa-

ving can be achieved. Tyron will continue developing its unique Runflat systems using this new technology on the comple-te range and expect to make further an-nouncements later in the year.Tyron at IDEX: 07-C20www.tyron.com
