+Self Identity
Eddie Huang: Taiwanese American, Cook and TV personality
Felt “homeless” considered the other everywhere he went.
Wanted to assimilate
Faced discrimination
Realized his own identity was all that mattered regardless of societal norms and expectations of race, culture, etc.
Built his life and saw his dreams through regardless of other’s perceptions of him.
+How do you Self-Identify Yourself?
Do you lean more towards a certain aspect of your identity?
Korean, American, by race, gender, ethnicity?
Don’t have preference yet?
Why pick a certain side? Personal preference.
+How do other’s identify you?
Based on stereotypes
First impressions
From other people
+Is there a discrepancy?
Do you make compromises?
Changes?
Are your activities or interests influenced by your perceived identity?
+Putting them together
+Internal and External Factors
How do you cope with it outside in the physical world?
Emotionally how do you cope with it on your own?
+For the future
In what direction individually do you want to carry adoption or anything else into their future, regarding their identity, how they want to present it to others
+The Media // Society
Portrayal of Race
Adoption
Is that accurate?
If not then why is it perpetuated?
Live by example to show people stereotypes aren’t true.
+Role Models // Mentors
Find people in life who you look up to for guides in life.
At school, in your extracurricular, at home, wherever!
Choose wisely, you are what you eat, you’ll gain the traits of the people you idolize to some extent.
+Future plan
Figure out who you want to be
What you want to show to the world
What you want to do
How you want to do it
How you want to present yourself
