Identifying Your Baby’s Reflexes

What Reflexes Do Babies Have, And What Do They Do?

Babies have many different reflexes that help them survive and get through the early stages of their lives. Many of these reflexes disappear over time as they are no longer needed.

Rooting Reflex

When you stroke the side of your baby’s face, they will turn towards it. This reflex is used to aid the baby in finding a breast to feed, and will usually disappear after reaching 4 months of age.

Walking Reflex

If you hold your baby upright as if they were standing, they will automatically make a walking motion. Very interesting!

Moro Reflex

If your baby feels like they’re falling, they will stick their arms outwards.Unfortunately, this also tends to quickly lead to crying as well.

Palmer Grasp Reflex

If you place something in your baby’s hand (such as your finger) they will tightly grasp it.

Sucking Reflex

You’ll find that your baby will want to put almost everything in their mouth and want to suck on it.Some babies have stronger sucking reflexes than others and can benefit from Starlight Baby’s pacifier clips to ensure their pacifier is always within reach!

Tongue Thrust Reflex

The tongue thrust reflex causes babies to push their tongue forward slightly, and helps with feeding. However, this can make it difficult to introduce solid foods if the reflex isn’t gone by that time.
