Identifying Nouns and Verbs in Sentences

We are going to recap nouns and verbs and then see how they can be classified depending on how they are used in a

Common NounsIf something is common, it happens often.

Common nouns are the names of general things.

They are the opposite of proper nouns, which name specific things.

Some examples of common nouns are:

table, garden, shop, boy, sink and school.

Proper NounsA proper noun names something specific, usually something

unique, like the name of a person, a brand or a place.

Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter, no matter

where they are in a sentence.

Abstract NounsIf something is abstract it exists only as a thought or idea.

It does not have a physical existence.

Therefore, abstract nouns describe a thought or

a state rather than something physical.

Hint: your five senses cannot identify these nouns.

You cannot touch, see, smell, taste or hear them!

VerbsVerbs are important because they tell you what’s happening in a sentence. Verbs are action words, e.g. dancing, falling. They can also show a state of being, e.g. is, am, was, were.

These are the ones that people often forget about.Verbs are DOING or BEING words.
