And what is „enthusiasm‟ but literally „in God inspired‟. A creative activity (golf for instance) or relationship calls something new and energizing from us as we rise to the challenge. God the Creator is the wellspring of all creative acts, and in his Son Jesus initiates the potentially most creative relationship with each of us. The impossibility of our achieving perfection in this, or any close relationship, is alleviated by the help of the Holy Spirit as described last month for Pentecost: God‟s gift to us, to enable us to keep on keeping on in our experience of him and his love for us. The Vicarage

Bishopsteignton

Dear Friends,

Another month and another golfing theologian features in my letter.

Mark Galli writes in his commentary on Mark‟s Gospel,

“The golf swing is the most complex motion in all of sports, requiring an impossible

combination of concentration and relaxation, rhythm and power, deliberation and

letting go. Every club – and there are fourteen in one‟s bag – requires anywhere

from a slightly altered to radically different swing. On the course, all sorts of events

unfold – hitting from behind a tree, gusting wind, downhill lies, and so on – that

require one to alter one‟s shot even more. It is rare over a lifetime to face two

identical shots.

“From the start, then, golf is an impossibility. There is no such thing as a perfect

swing or a perfect game. But it is precisely this elusiveness that makes golfers so

compulsive, so fascinated with the game. We leave the course frustrated because we

fell so short of the perfection we imagined, and yet we return to the course as soon as

possible because of the never-ending desire to reach perfection.

“This paradox is true of any passion – gardening, music, writing, painting. The

artist finds a measure of transcendence in painting a still life, but when done, she also

sees how far short the image on the canvas falls. It is this frustration that prompts her

to pick up the brush and oils and paint the same still life the next day and the next.”

(pp. 101,102.)

Hopefully we all have something, or someone, that we‟re passionate about. So that

however elusive the matching of our desire to do well in that activity or relationship

and the reality seems to continue to be, we don‟t give up!

It is the enthusiasm that we have for that activity or relationship that drives us on –

the more so when it‟s a person whom we are passionate about…

It‟s a wonderful experience to be enthusiastic about something or someone – it

generates energy, enabling us to reach heights, to plumb depths, to go to lengths that

we wouldn‟t have believed possible of ourselves without that motivation.

And what is „enthusiasm‟ but literally „in God inspired‟. A creative activity (golf for

instance) or relationship calls something new and energizing from us as we rise to the

challenge. God the Creator is the wellspring of all creative acts, and in his Son Jesus

initiates the potentially most creative relationship with each of us.

The impossibility of our achieving perfection in this, or any close relationship, is

alleviated by the help of the Holy Spirit – as described last month for Pentecost:

God‟s gift to us, to enable us to keep on keeping on in our experience of him and his

love for us.

With love,

Stephen.

IDEFORD CHURCH BELLS

Has anyone moved into our villages recently who rings bells and would like

to join our group in Ideford? We meet on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to

9.00 pm and will give you a very warm welcome!

(On Thursday 24th

June the Kenn Deanery Ringers Association has its AGM

in Ideford from 7.00 to 9.00 pm.)

FASHION SHOW EVENING

The members of the Ideford Social Group would like to thank all those who

came and supported this event on May 11th

. There were about 60 people

present as a selection of local models paraded the clothes that were on sale.

„Off the Peg‟, a shop based in Exmouth, gave a running commentary about

the models and their outfits and later there was plenty of time to browse and

try on any of the extensive range whilst enjoying a cuppa and a biscuit.

The profits gained from the evening amounted to an amazing £255 and will

be presented to the Torbay Breast Care Unit at the end of this month. Thank

you again for all your support.

IDEFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

After representing the residents of Ideford Parish for some years, Councillor

Fred Crispin has decided to step down.

I know that many people were saddened by this news. Fred has always put

the priorities of the Parish above any personal views. He has brought

balance, humour and sound common sense to the Council. All councillors

will miss his keen wit and thoroughly grounded wisdom. On behalf of

residents and councillors, I would like to sincerely thank Fred for his

unfailing service to our community. We all wish him well. Thank you Fred,

your presence in Council will be missed by us all.

VILLAGE HALL NEWS

Ideford Village Hall Management Committee

Chairman's (abridged) Report

17th May 2010

I am pleased to report that the Village Hall has had another successful year.

Refurbishing the toilets is complete, hopefully you agree that the toilets are much

improved. We were lucky enough to obtain grants from the Parish Council,

Ugbrooke Environmental, Devon County Council and Teignbridge Council. I would

like to thank all these organisations. This means the hall finances are in a very

healthy state.

The events hosted by the Village Hall were:-

The annual Christmas supper. An excellent evening that was enjoyed by all.

The annual Village Hall quiz. This was very well supported.

The Ideford dog show on the on the green was a lot of fun.

Lastly, “Those Magnificent Men”, a comedy play about the first non-stop flight

across the Atlantic.

The new charging structure for the hall from the first of May is: - Clubs,

societies and other regular users of the hall will pay £4 per hour, to use the whole

hall. Other casual users will pay £7 per hour. It is hoped that this structure will

encourage new clubs, and societies to use the Hall.

Finally, I want to thank all the committee members for the work they have done

throughout the year. We would welcome more people to come forward to join us.

Mark Hobson

Chairman Ideford Village Hall Committee

Changes to the Village Hall Committee.

Gladys Stevens stepped down from the committee as booking clerk and I would like

to thank Gladys for the wonderful job and dedicated hard work over the past seven

years. I stepped down as Chairman and I am taking on the role of booking clerk. I

would like to thank everyone who has supported me over the last three years. We

have a new chairman in Tony Sharland. We also have two new committee members.

Mark Hobson

“Those Magnificent Men”

About 50 people watched this, the latest production from “Villages In Action”. This

was a comedy about the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. It took us through

the lives of Captain John Alcock, a dashing WW1 fighter pilot and Lieutenant Arthur

Whitten Brown, a navigational genius with a gammy leg. It was a play with

something for all ages. Even though they were the first to cross the Atlantic non-

stop, it is Charles Lindbergh who is remembered. He was the 126th to cross the

Atlantic, but he did it solo and he was American. This was a play full of laughter; the

production had a real feel-good factor and, as usual, was an excellent production

from “Villages In Action”.

DEVON'S FAIRTRADE COUNTY STATUS RENEWED!

Devon is celebrating having its Fairtrade County status confirmed for another two

years. The County was officially awarded Fairtrade status in October 2008

having met all the targets laid down by the Fairtrade Foundation. These included

ensuring a proportion of local shops, cafes and other outlets sell Fairtrade

products, and local businesses and organisations, including the Council, use

Fairtrade products in their canteens, vending machines and other outlets where

possible. Schools, community and faith groups have also been using Fairtrade

products. To find out more about Fairtrade in Devon, and how you can get

involved, please visit http://www.fairtradedevon.org.uk.

RURAL ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN SUPPORTED BY YOUNG FARMERS

Devon County Council‟s campaign to improve safety on rural roads has gained

the support of local young farmers. The County Council is raising awareness of

the dangers of driving on rural roads. Government figures show that car drivers

and passengers are three times more likely to die on a rural road than a busy

urban street. Motorists are reminded to take extra care when driving or riding in

the countryside and the County Council‟s road safety officers say the problem is

not simply speeding but driving faster than is suited to the conditions, or

overtaking on the approach to a bend or where visibility is restricted.
