In the future economy, enterprises will be increasingly driven by innovation, and built around technology, data, brands, designs and other intangible assets. In such an environment, knowing how to identify, value and use your intangible assets for business growth will be key to your success. At IPOS, we have developed a suite of tools and services, as well as a network of partners, to help you understand that IP is not just a legal right but is a strategic business asset. Whether you are a start-up, an enterprise seeking growth, or a mature company, we can help you get a headstart in taking your ideas to the market. More broadly, we are building an innovation ecosystem that will position Singapore as a place for local and foreign innovators to commercialise their IP and monetise their ideas. We will connect Singapore to other innovation centres and communities around the world, and use our expertise and networks to help you take your IP and ideas into the world. This is how we transform your ideas today into assets tomorrow.

Ideas Today. Assets Tomorrow.

IP Dispute ResolutionIPOS is committed to the just, quick and cost-effective resolution of IP disputes that may occur at any stage of the innovation cycle. Our Hearings and Mediation Department (HMD) helps to resolve various IP disputes, such as those pertaining to the registration of trademarks, patents and registered designs.

We encourage companies to resolve IP disputes through alternative dispute resolution (ADR). ADR can help parties save time and costs, and achieve outcomes that are not always possible in traditional adjudication.

We are proud to be the first IP Office in the world to partner the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to offer ADR services through the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center in Singapore.

Performance Pledge for Dispute ResolutionAdjudicate 100% of cases within three months, from the time they are ready for full hearings.

Issue Grounds of Decision within three months (for trademarks and registered designs) or six months (for patents) from the conclusion of full hearings, for straightforward cases.

Incorporate ADR options into proceedings to facilitate their adoption.

Discuss dispute resolution options mostly via teleconference, which saves time and cost for parties, instead of face-to-face meetings.

Fast-tracked proceedings to reduce pendency of cases and costs for parties.

IP ManagementIP is an important asset that allows you to use your business’ innovations and creative ideas to compete effectively in global markets. Through strategic IP Management (IPM), you can create, own, protect, commercialise and enforce your IP resources to maximise value for your business. Here are three important things to know about managing your IP:

IP Management

As you create innovative products or services, you generate vast amounts of ideas and IP that become your “secret sauce” to success. Many businesses are unaware of the substantial value of these intangible assets and do not realise that they must be carefully managed.

IP is an asset

Like any other resource, your IP assets must be carefully managed in a strategic way to yield new areas of business growth and profitability. You can use IP as a vehicle to improve your market position, obtain financing*, monetise and take your technology and brands to the world.

* Please refer to the factsheet on “IP Valuation and Financing” for more information on using IP assets as collaterals for loans.

Identify IP Assets & Risk

Four important stages in IPM:from identifying your underappreciated

IP assets to maximising their value, IPM is an important strategy for your business.

Strategic IPM allows you to recognise your most important intangible assets and design management processes to safeguard them. An IPM analysis can be an important component of your business growth strategy. It helps you make informed business decisions on R&D, sales and marketing, as well as identify your competition and possible areas of collaboration.

IP Valuation and Financing

IP Valuation and FinancingIP is not just about law; it is about business. To fully unlock the worth of your IP, we have introduced a S$100-million IP Financing Scheme (IPFS) to help IP-rich companies monetise their IP for business growth and expansion. The Singapore government will partially underwrite the loans issued by participating financial institutions (PFI) which include DBS Bank Ltd, Evia Capital Partners Pte Ltd, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd, Resona Merchant Bank Asia Ltd and United Overseas Bank Ltd.

Companies can approach any of the PFI for a preliminary assessment of their granted patents, trademarks and/or copyright as loan collaterals. Thereafter, an expert valuer will conduct a valuation of your IP before you submit a formal application to the PFI, if the following criteria are met:

Please contact any of these companies for the valuation process:

The applicant’s company is incorporated in Singapore or is a sole-proprietorship/partnership registered in Singapore.
