Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx)
data format
Sean J. Barbeau, Ph.D.
Center for Urban Transportation Research
University of South Florida
Work Zone Data Exchange (WZDx) format
A way to share work zone information with other organizations (cities, DOTs, apps)
Goals:• To make travel on public roads
safer and more efficient through ubiquitous access to data on work zone activity.
• To help automated driving systems (ADS) and human drivers navigate more safely.
Lead by USDOT FHWA and ITS JPOhttps://github.com/usdot‐jpo‐ode/jpo‐wzdx

Example use case
City publishes work zone data in WZDx format
All apps and regional partners immediately reflect changes in real‐time
• No manual entry into vendor‐specific web portals required

Data format
WZDx defines a set of fields (shown right)
Fields are formatted in XML or JSON files

Creating your own WZDx feed
The jpo‐wzdx GitHub repository contains a number of tutorials and tools for creating your own WZDx feeds

Tampa Bay agencies
At the last Tampa Bay Smart Cities Alliance meeting, the following agencies expressed interest in publishing WZDxfeeds
• FDOT District 7
• City of Tampa
• Hillsborough County

FDOT District 7
Reviewed FL511 with FDOT Central Office
FL511 focuses on real‐time incidents, not planned work zones
FL511 not a good platform for exporting WZDx
FDOT District 7
fdottampabay.com has manually‐aggregated work zone data
• Sources include construction, design, and study projects
![Page 10: Ideas to Action (i2a) Workshop](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052821/628fdfc14aae4a2d8426e449/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)

10
FDOT District 7
Site contains project‐specific information with agency contacts
FDOT District 7
Not a good source for WZDx because it doesn’t have enough structured data
FDOT D7 Enterprise GIS also not a good source
FDOT D7 still committed to finding a location and method to export WZDx

Video Analytics
What is Ramp Metering?
Signals placed on entrance ramps
Upstream sensors monitor mainline flow
Ramp sensors monitor queueing
Operate at peak traffic demand
Red duration 3 to 7 seconds length
Breaks up platoons of entering vehicles
![Page 15: Ideas to Action (i2a) Workshop](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052821/628fdfc14aae4a2d8426e449/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
