A Thirst for Energy EfficiencyThe energy efficiency movement continues to escalate in every aspect of the home renovation industry.

Studies on this green movement are common and new aids are constantly being introduced to help take any complexity out of the equation.

As I wrote two years ago in this space, “one of the largest segments of our business and our growth over the last 12-18 months has been the window, insulation and siding components. We relate that to the fact with the cost of energy at an all-time high, people are definitely paying more attention to the building envelope.”

“Combine that with the fact the all-important consumer has a thirst for being environmentally vigilant and you have two powerful agents of change.”

The thirst is not subsiding. Findings of a recent survey conducted by Harris/Decima and commissioned by Scotiabank revealed that more than half of the respondents are planning to undertake home renovations over the next 12 months.

Of those surveyed, an impressive 88% indicated they wanted to learn more about how to make their homes greener and 83% are actively looking for ways to reduce their home energy bills.

of provincial home energy programs that remain in existence despite the sudden cancellation of the federal government’s EcoEnergy Retrofit program this past April. Many of the products that you will find in the seventh edition of Ideas, qualify for rebates through programs in existence right across the country from Newfoundland and Labrador to British Columbia. The government of Ontario, for example, is currently accepting new entrants into its Home Energy Savings Program, which awards homeowners with rebates of up to $5,000 for home energy improvements.

Meanwhile in New Brunswick, a province-wide program was launched in March by Efficiency NB to encourage homeowners to include energy efficiency in their renovation projects.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation summed it up best with this explanation: “While previous generations may have been content to live in drafty houses, most people now want comfortable warm houses. A healthy house today is well sealed, well insulated and properly ventilated.”
