I love the English language it’s so

malleable, adaptable and so full of

nuance and subtlety. It’s simply

delicious. Most of my ideas start with

language. Ideas born out of words,

become images, that resonate alongside

catch-phrases or slogans. Take the

word AAH! (exclamation essential).

It can mean a moment of recognition,

a microsecond of pleasure or a sense of

knowing. Which leads me to - the key to

great ideas - create surprises and leave

‘a smile in the mind’ of the viewer.

David Stuart and Beryl McAlhone coined the phrase with the title of their classic book ‘A Smile in the Mind’. That pretty much sums up what I love about design. I learnt my craft in the pre-digital era and whilst not an ‘old-fashioned’ designer (having successfully embraced and mastered all the new technology) I learnt early on to value ideas. Not only did I embrace the concept that all great design begins with a great idea, but I was schooled in the classic arts of graphics - like drawing, print-making, typography, photography and concept generation. The

new tools, available to us as designers, make the job faster, but not necessarily better, or easier,

and at the end of the day the computer and the programmes we use are merely tools. Without an idea to drive them, computers

are just dormant electronic marvels.

hen I first started working, ideas were tried, tested and executed in sketch-books or on drawing

tables. Now they all exist on a hard-disc capable of storing vast amounts of information.

HOWEVER I love the process of solving problems, and often much that is discarded is still of

interest, and has an intrinsic value, in that it charts the process and progress of solving a design

or communication problem. And what better way than to store and record that process than in

a digital sketchbook? So in keeping with the trend to ‘make it digital’ I present the work from

my studio completed during the last 24 months, during 2008 / 2009 / 2010, in a new format.

Enjoy and thank you for looking.

Representing the work of architectural

student’s from around the world, presents us

with an interesting challenge each year. The

brief requires us to develop a symbol or device

that is easily adaptable for print (tickets and

invitations), display (exhibition panels) and

audio-visual presentation, which is then

animated and shown on plasma screens

and in a multimedia format. We have made

good use of the circle, which represents the

two medals awarded each year, reinventing

it as a graphic form and discovering many

beautiful and surprising permutations along

the way. idea

graphic experiments found us exploring

many colourful and vibrant variations of the

We found a collection of coloured foam letters, scattered them on a mirror and made a soapy mess around them.

The clouds were reflected in the mirror, thereby creating a mesmerising, floating world.

Finally we covered the mirror in a lime green jelly and arranged the letters, like a message on a birthday cake.

Then captured it all on camera.

When designing logos, NOTHING CAN

REPLACE A PENCIL AND A LAYOUT PAD.

I love to start by sketching, letterforms, symbols,

combinations of letters and icons. It’s a visual

treasure-hunt. Sometimes, by swapping

my pencil for a stick shaved to a blunt end

and covered in ink, or a big fat decorator’s

brush and a large sheet of paper, new and

exciting letterforms are discovered.

30,000 miles and you still make me smile

And every time you call, I sit for a while

And picture you holding my hand

Oh this is such a delicate time for your intricate

mind

Oh this is such an innocent tim

your beautiful mind

And you are, part of me, my masterpiece

And I miss you so

You’re, part of me, my masterpiece

And I love you so

30,000 years ahead of your time, yeah

And every time you call, it takes me a while

To see that you’re not holding my hand

Oh this is such a delicate time for your intricate

Oh this is such an innocent tim

And you are, part of me, my masterpiece

And I miss you so

You’re, part of me, my masterpiece

And I love you so

Watching your fingers dancing 88

Oh my maestro storyteller and

I just can’t wait

To hear of your adventures till it’s

way too late

And pick you up and carry you

And whisper, that I’ve got you,

I’ve got you forever

Part of me, my masterpiece

And I miss you so

You’re, part of me, my masterpiece

Oh and I love you so

Part of me, my masterpiece

And I miss you so

How do the RIBA sell the idea of ACADEMIC MEMBERSHIP to schools of architecture, both in the UK and abroad?

Turn a negative into a positive and create an irresistible proposition.

Introducing RIBA Academic Membership

With this new class of membership, we are offering RIBA candidate courses and RIBA recognised schools of architecture the opportunity to develop closer links with the RIBA. The RIBA is one of the world’s foremost architecture organisations – the professional body responsible for setting benchmarks in architecture education, both in the UK and worldwide.

When your school becomes an RIBA Academic Member, you will add real benefits to your academic offer – from lectures and exhibitions, online debate and discussion, to student prizes, bursaries, and podcasts.

We have kept the annual subscription fee low to encourage as many schools as possible to participate. Working together we can achieve much more… for your school, for academics, for students, and ultimately for the future of the profession.

How membership benefits architecture education

Recognised as among the best in the world, UK schools of architecture are extraordinary places, and the RIBA – as the UK body for architecture and a major global player – enjoys a unique position in relation to this community. By working closely together, RIBA Academic Membership…

creates opportunities for students and staff – by catalysing initiatives, promoting debate and bringing together people and ideas in stimulating, unexpected ways

encourages academic innovation – and inspires future thought leaders of the profession

develops communication and dialogue between schools – the RIBA validates schools across the UK and as far afield as Chile, Hong Kong and india, so we have the contacts to develop an exchange of information and ideas within this global academic community

facilitates greater dialogue with government and practitioners – through contact with key influencers in government we hope to give schools a political platform at a critical time. We also aim to unite practice and academia in a constructive atmosphere

delivers events, services and benefits – designed to reflect the interests and needs of academic staff and students

7 NIGHT SCENTED JASMINE.......................................................................................................

9 The lights are always on around 2am in the morning. A television flickers and delivers a barely audible drone. The local cadre are still in the tea-shop, playing backgammon, attention turned away from the street as they do every night. A cat skulks, suspiciously hair raised in a snarl. Night is the time for cats and games and slow walks down the same cobbled street, with the scent of Jasmine making bearable the litter strewn corners where plastic bottles gather and conspire.

9 The figs have gone to sleep, but not the cicadas, nor me. Their engine hum is the same each night, scratching the stars into heaven and blistering the moon. The nights are hot and dry and even the dust is thirsty, crying out for rain - the memory of you hangs like a mantle - omniscient and oppressive, tugging at my heart as if to hold me back.

9 Tears scratch at my eyes and mingle with the sweat already gathered there. My throat too dry to convulse, twitches with emotion. To say one’s heart breaks is so wonderfully apt - like a dam wall before the flood, the tears well up, and with a convulsive crack and a wracking sob the wall bursts, drowning the night scented jasmine.

A memorable 'campaign identity' that will encourage musicians to support the fund-raising effort through donating time, thereby encouraging music-lovers in general to support the cause.

The main message is 'donate' - the campaign should encourage the recipient to donate to the MBF

THE RIBA COUNCIL MET IN MARCH LAST YEAR TO

DEBATE THE CONTENTIOUS ISSUE OF ‘THE FUTURE

OF AN EDUCATION IN ARCHITECTURE’. WE WERE

ASKED TO PROVIDE A SHORT FILM TO BE PLAYED,

IN BETWEEN SESSIONS, THAT WOULD PRESENT

CANVASSED OPINIONS OF THOSE ENGAGED IN

THE TEACHING AND PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE.

WE OPTED TO USE STRONG GRAPHICS (INSTEAD OF

TALKING HEADS) PRIMARLIY BECAUSE WE BELIEVE

IN ORDER TO GRAB PEOPLES ATTENTION AND

CONVEY THE ESSENCE OF WHAT THEY ARE SAYING,

THE IMMEDIATE POWER OF MOVING GRAPHIC

IMAGES IS FAR MORE EFFECTIVE. PRODUCED IN

UNDER 10 DAYS FOR A VERY MODEST BUDGET:

OUR CLIENT HAD THIS TO SAY OF THE RESULT:

Smash hit. The movie was very well received, and we are already being asked for copies; everyone was glued to it. The Council is learning to pronounce the word ‘viral’, and loving it. The President and CEO were very pleased, and best of all positively surprised by the power of design to communicate the various messages. Many thanks to you, and all the team who worked so hard to make this a success; please pass on our congratulations to everyone involved. I know you were all put under an absurd amount of pressure, but delivered a great concept and splendid movie to an unfeasible deadline. As always, it was a pleasure working with you.

THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBAby

Federico García Lorca

A TAMASHA AND HAMPSTEAD THEATRE PRODUCTION

TAMASHA THEATRE COMPANY is celebrating its 21st Year with a new production adapted from Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba. We were commissioned to create a striking image that would work hard to appeal to Asian audiences and attract general bookings for a ‘summer slot’ at the

Hampstead Theatre. We were inspired by the themes in the play to create an image that was both ‘sexy and summery’ but that would not alienate a more conservative audience.

Better to love a bird and cage it, than to cage your own girls. When the bird’s nest is destroyed, there is hope

ACT ONE

Scene one

Interior of Bilquis’s haveli. Drawing room, dark in contrast to the stark

sun outside which comes through the door to the inner courtyard. Bulky

antique furniture that sparkles with regular polishing yet looks like it has

barely been sat on. This is the front room for ‘guests’ that clearly hasn’t

seen many guests in its time. There are the odd religious hangings/

embroidery on the bare white walls. The stage is empty as the early

evening azaan (call to prayer) is heard, distorted because of the amplified

sound. A cacophony of men in the other room falls silent as the azan is

played.

(the servant enters with a wedge of white sheets)

Servant

(nonchalantly covers her head with a dupatta in respect for the call to prayer)

This azan is pounding right between my temples.

Bushra

(entering eating a shami kebab)

Do these new maulvis think the faithful are deaf, that they need to blast us to remind

us of our Farz?

Servant

The men will wait for Maghrib prayers before taking the funeral procession.

Bushra

Throngs of them are lined up outside, waiting to join the Janaza. Being a Friday,

they’re hoping their own prayers will be heard at the same time as notching up

favours with Allah Mian by offering prayers for the deceased.

Servant

Most of them didn’t even know him.

Bushra

Strangers praying for strangers…... Poor Fida, she fainted when she was

told she cannot go to the graveyard with the men.

Servant

She knows women are strictly forbidden. She’ll be the most alone

Bushra

She was the only one who loved her father. Shukar hai we have a

peaceful moment. I am starving.

ServantIf Bilquis could see you…!BushraIt’s no skin off her nose. Since she is bereaved and mustn’t cook, all thefood has come from outside. Dekchis full of pilau and korma and(offering some of the kebab she’s eating) shami kebabs made from therichest mince…. watch out for the green chilli kick in the centre. Thegenerosity of neighbours for the most un-neighbourly of women.Servant(sadly, anxiously) You’ll put some aside for my little girl hena Bushra?BushraToday you can save whatever delicacy you like for your Munni. TheQueen of Sheba (literally the translation of Bilquis) won’t notice. Stingyfly sucker! Her table is so bare, she has the nerve to serve one chicken fordinner when she has five hungry daughters…. each one too scared to helpthemselves to a leg.Servant(sharing the joke) As the others will wonder who will get the second legif they dare to take the first?BushraIt’s not in their kismet to tear off the flesh of a chicken leg!Voice(from within) Bilquis!BushraThe old Mautarma! Is she locked in?ServantWith two turns of the key.BushraYou should put the bolt across too. Her fingers are like five picklocks.VoiceBilquis!Bushra(shouting) Aa rahi he! (to the servant) Clean everything. If Bilquis bibidoesn’t find everything sparkling, she’ll squash my face between twoears.ServantI have never understood that expression.

Istanbul is a surprising mix of the

conservative and cosmopolitan melding an

old-world muslim culture with a vibrant,

edgy and contemporary zeitgeist.

Although a young and energetic society,

the historic Ottoman Empire still exerts a

strong pull and influence over both young

and old and whilst the city manages to

accommodate all the trappings of a modern

and prosperous society, the unease felt by

many traditionalists as the new world seeks

to replace the old, sometimes explodes

sharply into focus.

Its a noisy, bustling, dirty, loud, crowded

but beautiful city of minarets and domes

proudly proclaiming the glory of God,

shimmerimng high above the Bospherous

100% designDevelopment and refinement of a robust visual identity programmePresentation by Lime Marketing & AKD | 6 September 2010

the current logotype is comprised of the words (the signature)

100% design london

and for sub sectors100% futures 100% materials100% detail

The proposal is to drop the word london and create a strong template that will work across a variety of media and be easily adapted to suit all future applications.

Our recommendations for the logotype are twofold:

Strengthen the logotype to create a more compact and unique device

Adopt an additional ‘consumer brand’ device to carry the logotype which would form the basis of a template and make for an easily managed identity system

Language is the most imperfect and

expensive means yet discovered for communicating thought

$Language is the means

of getting an idea from my brain into yours, without surgery…

$…it’s a funny language
