We were promoting new checking accounts.

We used an underwater theme complete with seaweed, colorful fish and sea shells, anchors and water. Each staff member dressed up as a Mermaid, a Fisherman or a Jellyfish. Our message board sat to the right of our branch and held our slogan (see photo below). N/A

Results: We had a great time and our customers gave us wonderful feedback.

Our promotion highlighted our Now Checking product which offered customers .52% interest rate with a $1,000.00 minimum deposit. Our goal was to open 35 new accounts during the month’s promotion. We decorated the branch in the fashion of the infamous rabbit hole from the movie, Alice in Wonderland, and ran the promotion in conjunction with the theatrical release. We offered a book reading as a branch activity on Saturday mornings. We placed serving pieces from a tea set on our teller counter. We hung odd items such as clocks, lamps, books, paper lanterns, playing cards, umbrellas, etc. to resemble the path of Alice’s decent. We used large cutouts of the Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar. Our slogan adorned the cabinets behind our teller counter. N/A

Results: We ended up opening 18 new accounts and many inquiries that we didn’t expect.

Our goal was to make shoppers and customers aware of our New Citizens Free Rewards Checking Account with a 4.25% APR and to open 16 new Free Rewards Checking Accounts. This promotion ran for a month and a half during late March and April. We decided to do a rock band theme using the branch employees as the branch’s rock band. We decorated our cabinets behind the teller line displaying our account and the interest rate. We used cutouts of the branch employee's faces to draw attention to our account. “Good _____ Kroger Shoppers! Let Citizens National Bank rock your checking account by paying you 4.25%APY. With Citizens Free Rewards Checking you can earn that great interest rate and get your ATM fee refunded nationwide. Check with one of our Personal Bankers about opening your account today. So, come rock 4.25%APY with Free Rewards Checking and Citizens National Bank!”

Results: We received quite a lot of positive feedback on this promotion. As of the time of submission, we are half-way to our goal and on track to meet or exceed it.

This promotion ran during the month of March and was built around a St. Patrick’s Day theme. The slogan read, “Luck is What Happens When Banking Meets Technology.” The goal of the promotion was to highlight our e-statements and mobile banking products. We covered the cabinets behind the teller line in black paper, drew a rainbow, pot-of-gold, a leprechaun and shamrocks, and added our slo-gan. On Friday afternoons, we will distribute gold-foiled chocolate coins to shoppers and retail employees during aisle time as a way of raising awareness of our ‘tech products.’ N/A

We promoted CNB Credit Cards with a Back-to-School theme. We used a credit card report card to tie in the product with the theme. The goal was to obtain as many credit card applications as possible. We covered the cabinets with black paper and used white chalk to illustrate. We used the back of a school bus and school house to anchor the signage. We then created a comparison of the CNB Credit Cards to other card providers using a graded rating system. We held several Friday activities including cookie trays on the table and distributing pens, pencils and store charts for school supplies to those customers/shoppers with school-aged children. “What kind of rates are you currently paying on your credit cards? At Citizens National Bank, we offer both Visa and Master Card with a regular rate of 10.08% and a gold rate of 7.08%. If your current cards aren’t making the grade, come on over and apply for your new Visa or MasterCard at Citizens National Bank today. CNB and Food City, we’re here to serve you! “

Results: We did receive three secured cards and received lots of positive feedback from customers and shoppers.

Customer Service

The goal of this one-month promotion was to highlight all the access product offerings we provide for our customers ( i.e. Telephone Banking, Internet Banking, Mobile Banking, Phone Banking, etc.) as well as the specific benefits of In-store banking. Our slogan read, “Banking the Customer’s Way,” and was affixed on our cabinets along with cutouts of dollar and cents signs. We also attached starbursts highlighting the various conveniences we provide for our customers. Our message board sat directly in front of our branch and read, “109 Years of Customer Service: Banking The Customer’s Way! Founded in 1900 - Member FDIC!” N/A

Results: We had multiple comments and inquiries on services that customers did not know we offered telephone and mobile banking. Many customers were surprised to hear that we had over 7 banking locations in Gainesville.

We hung garland from the ceiling made in the fashion of Christmas Tree lights. Across the teller line were handmade presents addressed to Walmart shoppers sitting underneath a dusting of snow. We covered our cabinets in the back of our branch with snowflakes and placed letters reading, “Let it Snow!” We created a giant Christmas tree complete with ornaments and presents below, beside our slogan on the right wall of our branch. The slogan read, “Don’t Let Christmas Sneak Up on You Next Year. Start a Christmas Club Savings Account Today.” Around the slogan we hung ornaments. N/A

The 2003 FSI National In-Store Conference theme, “Catch the Fever,” was the basis of our promotion. We tweaked it a bit to fit our goal and came up with “Catch the CD Fever.” Our CD rates were finally going up to a whopping 2.5%APY, as we all needed to attract new customers/members. We were able to use our limited space to our advantage at all levels to catch the eye of the store’s everyday shoppers. We wanted a new way to truly show our appreciation to our customers. Everyone has used “We appreciate your business,” “Thanks so much,” “U-Rock,” etc. There are only so many ways to express your appreciation; and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ was just a little too much for our design. We asked store associates, shoppers and customers to try to pronounce this silly word. Just starting a conversation is the best way to Make a Friend, Make a Customer. We decorated the branch with a 70’s theme, complete with a mirror ball made of CD’s, a giant lava lamp, platform shoes, and our own Disco Dancer cutout. N/A

Our promotion ran for the month of March 2010. Dane County Credit Union’s mascot is the Great Dane. Our Great Dane account is our minor savings account for the 13 years of age and under crowd. Our focus was obtaining new memberships. We held a Chili Cook-Off on March 18, 2010. DCCU employees cooked the chili. Walmart shoppers and DCCU members voted on the winner. The winner received bragging rights! Numbers average but we drew a lot of attention with our decor (we are still new to this). Hoping to learn lots at Conference! We hung chili pepper garland from the ceiling. Our message board read, “DCCU is Hot.” Attached to the message board were green and blue logoed balloons. We also covered our windows with our slogan and chili peppers. Our mascot stood out in front of the branch to greet shoppers and bring attention to the promotion. We also distributed lollipops to the children of Walmart shoppers and our members. N/A

Results: We had a great turn out! Our numbers were average, but we are new at in-store banking and looking forward to gaining more ideas at the conference. We did meet lots of chili lovers!

Our goal was to comb 18 credit reports. Our promotion theme was based on the popular CBS show, C.S.I. Our promotion slogan was “Is your credit a mystery? Let us investigate!” It was a proactive approach that gave us many ‘ins’ with shoppers. The decoration plan and tag line does most of the work for you, making a novice loan officer look like a pro! N/A

Results: This was our most successful promotion. We were able to reach 100% of our goal and ended up funding $103,254.00 in loan volume as a result of this promotion. It caught the attention of many passersby as well as existing members. I recommend this promotion for a branch with a new staff as well as seasoned.

The purpose of this promotion was to upgrade single service accounts to full service and, of course, open new ones. The “game board” generated several questions from the members in regard to what we could offer them. Even the shiest employee could win with this game. When the members opened an account or added a product, they were eligible to enter a drawing to win the DVD version of Deal or No Deal. We played the Deal or No Deal game on a 52” TV Walmart set-up for us at our branch. For business development, we conducted aisle time on the weekends. N/A

This promotion was play on the word ‘Hay’ with a barnyard theme. Each time someone asked about the hay, we replied: “Hay, I’m glad you asked!”, or, “Hay, have you heard about our 4% reward certificate?” As a branch activity, we had a “bale” of hay our members could dig through to get prizes when they opened a reward certificate. For our business development activity, we passed out fliers in the store. Each of our staff had their own fliers with their names on them. The employee who had the most fliers returned to the store at the end of the month received a gift. We decorated with a bunch of hay and really cute scare crows.

The goal of the promotion was to increase the number of checking accounts for our branch. This month-long promotion based on a fishing theme was held during our American Diabetes Association fundraising campaign. We raffled off a tackle box filled with donated tackle from area businesses. We created hooks from silver pipe cleaners. Put bobbers on them, and baited them with rubber worms. We hooked on some fish we printed from the internet and hung them from the ceiling. We created water by hanging blue tulle along the front of the branch.

“Good ___ Food City shoppers. Have you been fishing for a free checking account? Stop by Enrichment Federal Credit Union today and we will hook you up! Enrichment Federal Credit Union is located at the front of the store to help you with all your financial needs. Thanks and have a great day!”

Results: We raised over $450 through the raffle for the American Diabetes Association. The promotion created a lot of interest for our branch and we opened 17 new checking accounts.

This promotion ran during the month of February 2010. Our slogan read, "Have your credit cards new rates & changes left you broken hearted? Fall in love with Granite Credit Union VISA, with rates as low as 8.99% APR." Our goal was to obtain 15 new credit card approvals. Our hope was to get more of our members to use our credit card services as they offer a great rate. We hung little credit cards and hearts from the ceiling and placed them all over the teller line and walls of the branch. Each credit card and heart reflected the 8.99%ARP. “Good _____ Walmart Shoppers! Have your credit card’s new rates and changes left you broken hearted? Fall in love with a Granite Credit Union VISA with rates as low as 8.99%APR. Visit Granite Credit Union at the front of the store to have your heart mended with a lower credit card rate.”

January 26, 2010 was our branch’s 10-year anniversary serving Walmart shoppers. To commemorate this milestone of service, we held a day-long celebration. We invited customers, store personnel, Financial Supermarkets, Inc., bank employees and bank board members to a brief ceremony where I provided a brief history of the in-store branch. Our bank president also offered a few words thanking our customers for their patronage and loyalty, Walmart for their partnership, FSI for their support and the employees for their hard work and initiative. We placed 10 easels in front of our branch holding a timeline display representing each of the years within the past decade. We created them using black foam boards and photos which highlighted events for each year of the past decade such as major headlines from newspapers; Oscar winners, World Series champions, Superbowl line-ups, celebrity deaths, hit singles, new Oconee State products or events, and more. We displayed our branch scrap books and hung enlarged photos of the original and current branch teams. We also had a refreshment table with assorted delectable treats. N/A

The promotion was designed to increase our membership goal. We did not set a formal goal for this promotion which ran through the months of November and December. In order to make the atmosphere feel more like home, we served hot cocoa to all members as our branch activity. Our theme focused around making sure all members felt like "family". In addition to the slogan, “Come Home for the Holidays,” a giant window frame hung on our cabinets and allowed members and shoppers to look into our “home.” During the month of November, the window was decorated for Thanksgiving with a set table and a fireplace. During the month of December, the window was decorated for Christmas complete with Christmas Tree, stockings and presents. We did not wear any special attire. “Good morning Food City Shoppers! Come home for the holidays. Join ORNL Federal Credit Union where you are always treated like family. We offer savings accounts for all ages, checking accounts, certificates, loans, IRA’s, Cyber-branch, loans, online bill pay and more. Our goal was to meet our annual consumer loan goal of $800,000. Our goal is $150K per quarter. This promotion was based on a boxing glove theme and consisted of a message board that sat directly in front of our branch which read, “Paying too much on your Auto Loan? Knock Out those high interest loans...refinance with us as low as 4.49%.” The staff, Mona Gafencu and Ronnie Barnes, worked to take it further by decorating the cabi-nets with the slogan and large boxing gloves. The promotion was very eye-catching. “Good Morning Kroger Shoppers! ORNL Federal Credit Union just saved a member 00.0% on refinancing their car loan from another lender. If you’d like to see if we can do the same for you please stop by ORNL Federal Credit Union at the front of Kroger before leaving the store. We look forward to servicing your lending needs today!”

Results: We exceeded our goal for the quarter with way over $300K putting us back on track for the year. Not all was attributed to the message board, but we got a lot of interest from it and from mortgage referrals. We recently re-worded the sign to read “auto loans” as well and received more inquiries. I do not know of any actual car loans we refinanced as of today.

Whether you are on team Edward or team Jacob, this one is for you. For our October promotion, we used the theatrical release of the second Twilight movie, New Moon, as inspiration. The goal of the promotion was to support our local food bank by holding a canned food drive. We covered everything in the branch in black and red material. We hung New Moon movie posters on the walls. A large decorated collection barrel sat to the right of the branch beside our message board which read, “P1FCU and You — Help Make New Moon a Harvest Moon for Bonner City Food Bank. During this promotion, we were also running a special rate on vehicle loans for 4.49% APR. N/A

Results: We collected quite a lot of canned foods for the Bonner City Food Bank thanks to Walmart shoppers and the wonderful customers of Potlatch No. 1 Federal Credit Union.

Customer Service

Our goal was to showcase our member service and to get our new members to open more services than just a savings account. We wanted to highlight our basic services that are free and easy to use. Our goal for the month of April is to open 15 to 20 new accounts with a savings, checking, debit card and direct deposit. We want to show our new and existing members that there banking experience can be fun, easy, and make them feel special. We also supported our local baseball team and gave away tickets to the opening game in a drawing if you open all four services. Our decoration plan was centered on the sport of baseball. We hung baseballs from the ceiling and cutouts of players, pennants and banners. We wore our favorite teams baseball shirts as well. N/A

Results: As this promotion is still running, we will have our results on the display board we bring to the conference. Check us out!

The promotion was geared to bring attention to our branches and celebrate our customers and their pets. We held a contest for the CUTEST PET. For two weeks, customers brought in their pet’s photos. Following this time, there was a two-week voting period. The winner was chosen by other customers and received a gift basket courtesy of Superior Savings Bank, Smooch-A-Pooch Salon, and our Super Market Stores. Their pet's picture was also framed and displayed at the branch offices. Their gift basket included a $50 gift card to the Supermarket we are located in, a $50 grooming package to Smooch-A-Pooch Salon, dog treats and toys, "Go Green" bags donated by the stores, and various SSB items (coffee mugs, shopping lists, chip clips, etc). We decorated our branch by placing flip charts around the branch stating the rules and dates of the contest. Customers’ photos of their pets were hung on the walls of the branch. N/A

Results: It went over very well, and we gained some new accounts because of it!

We have recreated the classic family game of Monopoly to a very interactive business development game for our branch employees. The event lasted for a month. The board was stored on the Branch Manager’s desk.

We didn’t have a PA for this promotion as it was for employees only. However, there were several PAs written as a part of the game depending on which space the employee landed.

Results: We were much more focused and intentional with our business development activities. The game also forced us to step-out of our comfort zones in all areas of business development.

Our goal was to open 20 savings accounts during the last two weeks of September and encourage more of our customers to save. Any client that opened up a savings account or made a deposit into their savings account was entered into a drawing to receive two tickets to Omaha’s River City Roundup. We also hosted a Pin-the-Tail on the Horse game and a Hat Toss contest. We served chips and salsa on Saturday. Our promotion was based on a western theme. The branch was decorated with hay bales, saddles, cowboy boots, spurs, hats, pails and sunflowers. We wore western wear on Fridays and Saturdays. N/A

Results: We opened 16 new savings accounts during the promotion and our savings deposits grew by $200,000. The promotion was very well re-ceived. The winner of the Omaha River City Roundup tickets was very excited.

The promotion ran the first two weeks in September. The goal was to encourage our clients to use their debit cards. For each customer that brought five or more debit card receipts to the branch, we provided them with a free two-liter of soda. As a branch activity, we set-up an old fashioned soda jerk stand and distributed ice cold soda. The promotion theme was the 50’s. We decorated the branch with two-liters of soda tied up in ribbons. We also used retro soda signage and retro soda bottles. We dressed in poodle skirts, bobby socks, chiffon scarves, white t-shirts, jeans and black leather jackets (the greaser look). N/A

Results: We gave out 35 two-liter bottles of soda. We also sold 5 new debit cards as well. The promotion was very well received.

Our focus for the month of March 2010 was to promote our Visa Platinum Preferred Credit Card. Our goal was to open five new cards. For completing our aisle walks, we handed out small rubber basketballs that we cut in half and wrote prizes on them. The member that brought the ball to the branch could claim their prize. Also, we had the members shoot a basketball into a hoop we hung on the door and rewarded them with a prize if they scored. We popped popcorn to distribute. We hung pennants above the teller line. We placed cutouts of basketballs with the TFCU logo on them all over the branch. From the ceiling hung orange referee’s whistles. Above our cabinets sat ball caps representing our favorite basketball teams. Our staff wore their favorite team jersey and jeans on Fridays and Saturdays for the month of March and the first week of April to celebrate NCAA March Madness Basketball. “Good _____ Fry's Shoppers. We purchased a Las Vegas-style wheel with 12 prize spots. We use it for member appreciation and as a colorful tool to draw Walmart shoppers to our branch. At Thanksgiving in 2009, we invited members to spin for a Walmart gift card, a turkey, a pie, a free credit report, a free financial consultation, and more. At Easter this year, we worked the aisles and distributed invitations printed on pastel-colored eggs to shoppers to spin the wheel and win a prize. The wheel’s loud “clacking” noise as it spins generates real curiosity and excitement with shoppers. As a result, we have had many good conversations with folks about our credit union and the products and services we offer. Our members continually comment, “you guys are always doing something fun in this branch.” They often ask when the wheel will return! Our Marketing Department also borrowed the wheel for three home shows this Spring. N/A The wheel was a significant investment for us ($500), but the credit union as a whole has utilized it. And, as I mentioned on the last FSI ‘Live Chat with a Trainer,’ I got a $95,000 Home Equity Line from a shopper spinning and winning a free credit report. If the cost was split between several branches, it wouldn’t break anyone’s budget.
