In the spring of 2019 we took upon this new role

after having been active members of the IDCN

Global Executive Board. So much has happened

since the IDCN Copenhagen chapter was

founded 3 years ago by the University of

Copenhagen. Today we are the Steering

Committee leads of IDCN Copenhagen as well as

IDCN Global Presidents. We have been

responsible for driving this initiative forward

together with the rest of the Steering

Committee’s corporate members represented by

Danske Bank, EY, NN and Ørsted.

We are proud to have more than 20 corporate

members from sectors within education, life

science, biotech, finance, shipping, engineering,

consumer products and consulting. IDCN

provides the opportunity to volunteer and

network with human resources professionals and

corporate representatives through career

events.

We strive to create the best possible services for

our international staff and their spouses. IDCN is

a great initiative, because it is for spouses and it

is driven by spouses!

FOREWORD FROM OUR GLOBAL PRESIDENTS

www.idcn.info [email protected]

We are delighted and honored to have been elected to serve as IDCN Global Presidents.

Mary K. Kobia & Mark de Vos – Global Presidents and

founders of IDCN Copenhagen

Through its many career events, IDCN offers the

opportunity to build a business network in

Denmark. It also gives the possibility to create a

social network with other spouses. Therefore,

we believe that IDCN is a very good supplement

to our Dual Career Services here at the

University of Copenhagen.

Furthermore, our Presidency role is important,

because it gives us the opportunity to network

globally, to influence and to share best practices

from IDCN Copenhagen, Funen and Jutland with

other locations in the world. >>>

Our role as President is an add-on to everything else we do within IDCN.

>>> The IDCN partner volunteers have been

devoting a lot of their time and energy in

bringing IDCN Copenhagen to the next level. The

volunteers within their multi-cultural teams have

over the years created extraordinary and unique

career and networking events. They have also

developed and improved their individual skills

and competencies.

It is wonderful to get feedback from former IDCN

volunteers after finding a job that they are using

these skills and sometimes even got the job

because of these newly learned proficiencies.

IDCN is a great success and we can see that

more and more partners are getting jobs within

this network. We have seen first-hand how the

IDCN contributes and how many of the spouses

to our international employees have found

employment with the help of IDCN. We have

numerous job success stories.

By using limited resources, we are now both

helping our employees and their spouses.

FOREWORD FROM OUR GLOBAL PRESIDENTS

Although the IDCN concept is very different from

country to country, we can see that we have a

lot in common and also experience the same

challenges. The IDCN Global Presidency position

provides a great platform for knowledge sharing,

setting strategic goals, and making sure that

there is consistency in IDCN’s global work.

We are thrilled to have such a strong and

committed team with Shivani Bhardawaj and

Damion Edwards from the IDCN Center of

Expertise helping us drive this initiative forward

together with the IDCN’s Global Executive Board.

Their commitment and involvement is

imperative to IDCN’s continued growth and

success.

In closing, we would like to thank each and

every one of the Corporate Members, Partner

Committee Members and the Center of Expertise

for your commitment, positive energy and

involvement in IDCN. We look forward to

continuing our IDCN journey and being part of

the ongoing achievements of the International

Dual Career Network globally and locally

experiencing new adventures in 2020 with all of

you.

MEET RAUL HERNANDEZ – PARTNER PRESIDENT

4

Copenhagen Newsletter December 2019

“It is a great opportunity for me being the Partner President for IDCN Copenhagen. Since the first day I started this new role so many challenges came with it, both professional and personal.

I believe that it is a big step, with so much more responsibilities and opportunities with corporates and partners members that can give

you the chance to contribute and add value at the same time.

IDCN CPH is growing so fast that it is impressive how many new corporates are enrolling and also new volunteers joining. My main

goal is to provide each volunteer a great experience and also facilitate a close connection with our corporates."

Raul Hernandez is a volunteer you will surely meet at our events. He is the IDCN Copenhagen Partner President. Raul started volunteering in March of this year and in September he became Partner President. Time to meet Raul and hear about his experience as Partner President.

Mr Neils Hellenberg, an Enterprise tech at

SimCorp, introduced the company and shared

how his role at SimCorp has changed over time.

After months of planning and preparation our

latest IDCN career event was held on November

27th 2019. The career event was hosted by our

newest corporate member SimCorp, at their

headquarters in Copenhagen.

This was the first IDCN event for many, 81% of

the partner and 71% corporate representatives,

with 12 companies attending. The event

explored approaches towards a successful

organisational change by enabling individual

transition using change management.

SIMCORP

Perusing through the website of SimCorp, a

Danish software company, one comes across

the words Simplify, Automate, Grow and Adapt.

It is clear that the company celebrates growth

and adapting to change.

Established in 1971, SimCorp is one of the

world’s leading providers of integrated

investment management solutions. The

company now employs more than 1,300

highly-skilled staff in 20 locations worldwide.

Change Management:How to manage your own change successfully?

Copenhagen Newsletter December 2019

SimCorp supports all

employees to explore

their potential in new

roles and divisions,

this is an integral part

of the company’s

ethos.

“Daring greatly means the courage to be

vulnerable. It means to show up and be seen.

To ask for what you need. To talk about how

you’re feeling. To have the hard

conversations.” -Brené Brown

Marianne Fink, a change manager at SimCorp set

the stage for the workshop with this wonderful

quote by Brené Brown:

CHANGE MANAGEMENT

Change Management is a process that helps

ease any organisational transition by guiding

individuals to adopt change in order to drive

successful outcomes.

Employees undergo a 3-week training which

equips them with the requisite tools. As an

added benefit, employees receive 6 weeks of

paid leave!

As someone whose role in SimCorp has seen

many changes, Marianne explained that a key

part of change management is to accept that

not all behaviours can be controlled.

She discussed how SimCorp has incorporated

key values that they call the 4Cs to facilitate

change. Accordingly, change is brought about

when one is Curious, Courageous, Capable and

believes in Collaboration.

IDCN CAREER EVENT: SIMCORP

Change management

aids the company with

implementation of

planned changes within

an organisation. It plays

a crucial role in helping

employees understand,

accept, commit to, and

embrace changes.

Copenhagen Newsletter December 2019

Why do we need change management?

Change is more successful when equal focus is

given to individual stakeholders.

More than 79% of the effort is usually put towards

the technical aspects of change and considerably

less on personal aspects. Over 70% of change

projects fail due to lack of sufficient preparation

and focus on all aspects of change.

A model-based change management increases the

efficiency of an organisation by focusing on driving

individual change. This is achieved through clear

goals, a simple framework and common language.

Change Management at SimCorp

SimCorp as an enterprise, diligently works towards

easing transition for employees. One of the many

ways they achieve successful change management

is by nominating Sponsors. Sponsors within the

company advocate, coach and manage resistance

in relation to change. A sponsor communicates

the nature of change and why it is needed with

the employees.

These communications are in the form of Change

Stories that answer 5 critical questions:

ADKAR model of change

The ADKAR model is a 5-step framework,

developed by Jeffrey Hiatt. It is an acronym for 5

milestones that each person in an organisation

must go through to be successful at change.

Why do we need change? Where are we going? What will happen? How will we do it? What’s in it for me?

Page 7: IDCN COPENHAGEN DECEMBER NEWSLETTER · IDCN Copenhagen is pleased to present the December Newsletter. In this edition, we have collected some very interesting articles: a word from

www.idcn.info [email protected]

IDCN CAREER EVENT: SIMCORP

The letters in the acronym stand for Awareness,

Desire, Knowledge, Ability and Reinforcement.

The ADKAR model is a widely used change

management tool that helps identify why change

is difficult and why some changes succeed while

others are unsuccessful.

How do I manage my own change?

It is essential to identify one’s own position and

openness to transformations before embarking

on a journey of change.

Marianne shared an incredible video with the

members exploring the dynamics of human

behavior. The video creates conscious awareness

of our mental state and our willingness to adapt

to new circumstances.

Locating Yourself: Click here to access the video

Change Canvas

Finally, Marianne presented a helpful framework

used for structured achievement of personal

goals. The Change Canvas helps you chart out

clear and attainable objectives for change. More

importantly, this format helps you prepare for

future obstacles and formulate solutions.

Have you been to one of IDCN’s Kaffemik yet? If

not, are you wondering what is all about?

Firstly what does Kaffemik actually mean?

The term ‘kaffemik’ is a Danish word for a

traditional Greenlandic gathering. An open

house, where guests get together to enjoy

themselves. Traditionally the guest is there only

as long as it takes them to drink two cups of

coffee, to then make room for other guests.

themselves. Traditionally the guest is there only

as long as it takes them to drink two cups of

What happens at an IDCN kaffemik?

It is our informal meet up, where

everything about life in Denmark can be

discussed. While at the same time

enjoying a nice cup of tea or coffee!

The conversation is free flowing, a

chance to ask questions about being a

member of IDCN or even volunteering if

you are interested.

No registration is required, you can just turn up on the day. No need to wear

business attire either and kids are also welcome.

Our most recent Kaffemik

Our last Kaffemik took place

on the 13th November, we

had some great feedback and

there was even a fun game.

Why not start the new

year trying something new

and attend our next Kaffemik

in January! See the invite

with all the details on the

next page.

“I appreciated the Kaffemik for meeting new and

very interesting people. I was also very glad to

understand better IDCN and the variety of activities

proposed.” Fabienne

”This was my second time attending a Kaffemik. It

such a wonderful event to meet people who are in similar

situations as yourself. It isn't formal which allows for chat

about general life in Denmark.” Anon

Nasira Karim is a well-known IDCN alumni. She

started volunteering for the Membership Team

in June 2018 and became Partner President in

2019. A few months later, she landed a job at

IDCN corporate member L’Oréal as Nordic

Payroll Professional. We asked her about her

volunteering experience and how IDCN helped

her finding a job in Copenhagen.

Why did you join IDCN?

Honestly, the driving force behind joining IDCN

was to be active, get all dressed up and to get

out of the house, instead of being stuck inside

four walls with the frustration of getting rejected

and being clueless. In addition, after attending a

few events organised by IDCN and having talked

to Mary K. Kobia, I realised IDCN can be the best

opportunity to learn about Danish work culture

and to expand my network.

Through volunteering at IDCN I have become:

1 Confident

2 Part of a valuable network

3 Proactive

“IDCN taught me to be proactive and helped me to build an amazing professional network in Denmark”

IDCN SUCCESS STORY

IDCN shaped me inside and out. When I first

moved to Denmark two years back, the first

challenge I faced as any other foreigner was to

understand the new Danish dimension both in

terms of work and social perspective. IDCN

became the first place where I could make some

friends while learning the tips and tricks to enter

Danish working dimension.

How did volunteering at IDCN help you find a

job?

Being part of IDCN has been a great value add to

my profile and helped me a lot to develop my

interpersonal skills to a wider network. Most

importantly, IDCN gave me the opportunity to

have direct dialogue with some of the most

important companies in Copenhagen, like EY,

L'Oréal, NNE and Ørsted, and to get to know the

working culture. >>>

In September 2017, I came to Denmark with kids to join my husband who had already started

working at DTU. A month later, I came to DTU to participate in “Active Action” – a spouse event held by

Kathy Borys Siddiqui. Here, I learned about the expat adjustment phases (“Honeymoon”, Culture Shock,

Adaptation), which turned to be helpful later when my “Honeymoon” with the new country was over. I

lacked energy and was feeling down. It was a great support to know that it is okay to have such period in

your expat life. Now, I asked Kathy for the interview to share her knowledge and positive energy with

other spouses, who are going through different phases of their expat lives.
