Many things led me to choose Samford. I loved the small class sizes and the experienced faculty of CRNAs. Samford also had a wide variety of clinical sites available, and that was very important to me because I had the opportunity to learn everything from regional anesthesia and cardiac anesthesia.

-Amanda Long, M.S.N., CRNA, ‘13

From the time of my initial interview, I knew Samford was a special place. The small class size allows the development of close relationships between students and faculty, leading to a better educational experience and ties that continue beyond graduation. There are other nursing schools, but Samford was the perfect choice for me.

IDA V. MOFFETT SCHOOL OF NURSING

prepares youTO ANSWER THE CALLING OF YOUR LIFE

Are you called? It’s long been said that people are drawn to nursing, not in search of a career, but in response to a

calling. We educate nurses who have the wisdom, the skills and the courage to go out into the world and make people’s

lives better. In Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, we offer a number of degree programs, from a traditional B.S.N. to a

second degree B.S.N. for people who are making a career change. We offer master’s degrees in specialties such as

family nurse practitioner, nurse educator, health systems management and leadership and nurse anesthesia. We also

offer a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. All graduate programs, with the exception of nurse anesthesia, are offered

online. Every year, our graduates pass their certification exams at rates far surpassing national averages. But most

importantly, led by their calling, our graduates leave Samford prepared to make the world a better place.

HISTORYIda V. Moffett once said, “Before great things are accomplished, someone has to dream a dream.” The Birmingham Baptist Association founded the Birmingham Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1922 with the goal of educating nurses to meet a desperate need for skilled practitioners. Originally established as a hospital-based diploma program, the school was renamed Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing in 1968 and became the first program in Alabama to achieve accreditation by the National League for Nursing. In 1973, following a merger agreement with Baptist Health System, the nursing program transferred to Samford University and began offering associate and baccalaureate degrees in nursing. In 1988, the nursing school moved to its current home in the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Center for the Healing Arts on Samford’s campus.

While Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing has experienced significant growth and transformation since its foundation, the school’s objective remains unchanged: we prepare students to provide exceptional, compassionate patient-centered care. The school focuses on four foundational pillars, all of which are based on the vision and passion of Mrs. Moffett: academic excellence, compassion, caring and service. It’s because of this approach that we are recognized across the country as one of the premiere schools of nursing. In 2005, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing was designated a Center of Excellence by the National League for Nursing for “creating environments of learning that promote innovative student learning and professional development.”

For more than 90 years, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing has continued Mrs. Moffett’s legacy by instilling her unique vision and passion in those called to our profession. Today, more than 5,000 nurses who’ve graduated our programs are impacting the lives of others throughout the United States and around the world.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCESPreparing Nurses Who Care In Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, learning extends far outside of the classroom. Clinical and practicum experiences play a significant role in the educational foundation of our students. These hands-on experiences prepare students to practice in a variety of roles to meet the health care needs of individuals and families across the life span.

As a nursing student, you have access to some of the most advanced simulation technology in the world. In 2010, we introduced a state-of-the-art human simulation center that allows the faculty to recreate common health care situations and challenges you to practice the technical and nontechnical skills you need in a safe setting without putting patients at risk. After working in the simulation lab, you’ll be prepared to enter the actual clinical environment feeling confident in your skills. The simulation center is unique to Samford; it is unmatched by any other local school of nursing.

Undergraduate students complete at least two clinical courses every semester, and many of our graduate programs include clinical or practicum experiences.

“The goal of the program is that our students can leave here and be ready to practice anywhere they want to practice, no matter where that may be,” says Amy Snow, director of clinical services for the department of nurse anesthesia. To ensure that goal, Snow sits down with each student to custom design a clinical schedule.

Because we’ve been educating nurses for more than 90 years, our administration and professors have deep relationships with clinical sites throughout the country and are able to help students get the hands-on experience they need to answer the calling of their lives. Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing maintains more than 300 clinical contracts with sites across the country. We place all online students in clinical sites where they live to ensure convenience during their practicum hours.

SERVICEAt Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, we prepare students with the compassion, skills and knowledge necessary to deliver exceptional care in a wide variety of settings. As a Christian university, we also believe that we must put the great depth of knowledge and experience in our faculty, staff and students to work making the lives of people better, here at home and in communities around the world.

We put those beliefs into action through numerous outreach programs like faith community nursing, community involvement, CampUs and mission work in the United States and abroad.

There is a child that epitomizes the reasons I became a nurse. His name

is Robert; he was a nine-year-old boy living in a hut in Zambia with 12

other children. All of the children, siblings and cousins, were orphaned

and being raised by their grandmother. Robert was HIV positive, and

the first time I saw him, he was very sick. I was part of a group of nurses

that trained caregivers in his village, and those caregivers had been very

diligent in their care for Robert. When I went back the second time, he

was in school and looked amazing. He was running and playing exactly

as a child his age should. He even talked about becoming a doctor. Seeing

him thrive and grow is the reason I became a nurse. That’s what I want

the rest of my professional life to be about.
