IDN481IntroductiontoDesign1CourseOverviewThiscoursebuildsacontextualbasisforthefieldandprofessionofdesign.Designersofthehighestcaliberoffernotonlyexcellentformalskillsandconceptualrigor,butalsoanintellectualgraspoftheprofessionalpracticeofdesign,includingevolutionthroughhistory,currentstateandfuturedirection.Broadknowledgeofthefieldofdesign,andthedifferentareasofpractice,willhelpstudentsmoreeffectivelypursueopportunitiesofthegreatestinterest.Thepracticalrequirementsforpursuingdesign-orientedroleswillbeaddressed,includingbasicportfolioexpectations.Supplementaryassignmentsandafewexerciseswillbewovenintothecourse.LearningObjectives• Thecoursewillhelpstudentsbecomemorefluentinmattersofdesignpracticeandcultures.

Studentswilldevelopamoregroundedperspectiveondesigndisciplines(orareasofpractice)ofgreatestinterest.

IDN482IntroductiontoDesign2CourseOverviewThisintentofthiscourseistobuildabaselineofknowledge&familiaritywiththeprofessionalpracticeofdesign–acrossdisciplines,applicationsandenvironments.LearningObjectivesThecoursewilladdressarangeofcurrentprofessionalpractices,includingthetraditionalcoredisciplines,thecurrentlandscapeandconvergingfields.Thebasicsetincludes:productdesign;communication+graphicdesign;designplanning;designresearch;interactiondesign;servicedesign;designeducationLearningOutcomes• Context:Howdesignanddesigneducationhasevolved(fromtheWWIItothepresent).Youwill

understandwhywedothingsthewaywedo,andwhatmakesdesigndistinctive.• Criticism:Howtothinkcriticallyaboutthedesignprofessionandyourroleinthefieldofdesign.You
