Information and communication technologies (ICTs) can improve environmental performance and address climate change across the economy. The biggest gains for smarter environmental and economic strategies and applications are in power generation and distribution, buildings and transportation – three areas which contribute to the bulk of greenhouse gases. Further environmental benefits of ICT applications are evident in areas such as water management, biodiversity protection, pollution reduction.

ICT innovation is a key element to spur green growth in the economic crisis and recovery.

However, OECD suggests that most government and business initiatives are still following business-as-usual paths and do not sufficiently tap the sector’s innovation potential.

The EU aims to replace at least 80% of electricity meters with smart meters by 2020 wherever it is cost-effective to do so. Smart metering and smart grids rollout can reduce emissions in the EU by up to 9% and annual household energy consumption by similar amounts. To measure cost effectiveness, EU countries conducted cost-benefit analyses based on guidelines provided by the European Commission.

Under a project promoted by the European Union, 15 different institutions as well as companies such as Ericsson, Telefonica and Telefonica I+D and several universities as well as research centers across Germany, Spain, Denmark, UK, Australia and Greece were given the responsibility to turn this Spanish city into a smart city with the help of IoT technology.

Application: With the use of over 20,000 sensors, electronic device, mobiles and cameras installed throughout this city, a number of day to day intelligence tasks are carried out with utmost ease. These include information on public transportation timetables, conditions, advices for traffic, water needs, information regarding the quality of air and much more. As a result of this upgrade, the city of Santander has also earned the Future Internet Award.

Giving a more innovative twist to the concept of IoT smart city, citizens of this mega city are making use of smart phones, DIY (Do It Yourself) sensors as well as applications for solving problems that concern the city of New York.

Application: In New York, there is a special app designed along with DIY sensors which the citizens are using for the purpose of saving the city from a crucial issue regarding its water and sewage. At times of heavy rainfall, raw sewage gets pumped onto the harbor of New York City at a rate of 27 billion gallons per year. With the use of the sensors, water level is determined at the time of overflowing sewage and with the help of the smart phone application “Don’t’ Flush Me”, all citizens get to know when it is the right time to flush water.

2. HORIZON 2010:

Competitive Low-Carbon Energy Project proposals under nine topics in the area of renewable energy sources, smart grids and storage and decarbonisation of fossil fuels. The total call budget is €189.3 million. Mobility for Growth 17 topics with a total budget of €216.2 million are open for research and innovation proposals in the fields of aviation, waterborne transport, road safety, green urban mobility, transport logistics and infrastructure, as well as research supporting policy making. Automated Road Transport Project proposals on automated driving systems for passenger cars, trucks and urban transport, as well as the underlying digital infrastructure, can be submitted under three topics with a total budget of €50 million. Smart Cities and Communities A call for proposals is open for Smart Cities and Communities lighthouse projects. Lighthouse cities should develop intelligent, user-driven and demand-oriented city solutions that could be replicated in other urban districts across Europe, with the involvement of follower cities. The total budget is €69.5 million, of which €12 to €18 million will be allocated to individual projects (indicative).

4. EBRD – Natural Resources

Natural resources, including oil, mining and gas, is a vital sector for many transition countries. EBRD focuses its efforts on improving environmental, social, corporate governance and transparency standards, as well as enhancing energy efficiency and energy security.

Cleaner production and supply. EBRD will support the cleaner production and distribution of natural resources through greater energy and resource efficiency, for example by reducing gas flaring or investing in cleaner transport fuels or fuel switching from coal to gas. In the case of coal-fired generation, the low-carbon transition necessitates a fundamental shift away from coal as a source of electricity and heat. Accordingly the Bank will not finance investment in this sector except in rare and exceptional circumstances, where there are no feasible alternative energy sources.

of data is being transferred and analyzed to get optimized outputs.

With the big data analysis and the cloud storage capabilities, companies

and startups in the energy side of things will get to faster results

and ultimately, better efficiency.

If you were to be a non-engineer and still own or manage a renewable energy farm, things could get wildly complicated for you.

With all the kilowatts per hour data, actual energy-apparent energy mumbo-jumbo, you could easily get lost in the wilderness.

The downside of using big data for analysis is storage capabilities, be

it the cloud or the old school hard disk storage on site, is very limited as

when compared to the data that it collects and stores.

Large data storage means large space occupation, larger security risk and

subsequently the economic and energy costs that accompany this.

All the essential data should be kept for the future calculations and usage

trends.

The conventional way to store the said data would be on a centralized

server, but that is in the past.

With the advancement in the decentralization of database techniques, all

essential data could be stored in individual data holding centers.

If you had seen the movie called ‘Person of Interest’, you know how important this machine learning and artificial intelligence is going to get in the coming days.

In the terms of the energy sector, this will be used in the prediction of the future load and computing the real-time big data and storage of the said data.

The decision to be made so as to keep what data and delete the rest cannot be humanly done within an acceptable time limit. Hence leaving the mundane tasks to the AI.

In due course of time, all the computing decisions could be made entirely by the AI for most efficient operation of said sectors. Here’s hoping Terminator doesn’t become a reality, though.
