TRANSCRIPT
MR GILMER’S CLOSING STATEMENT You are Mr Gilmer, the lawyer for the prosecution in the trial of Tom Robinson and you are about to give your closing statement to the jury. You have the opportunity to persuade the jury before Atticus Finch addresses them on behalf of Tom Robinson. Write Mr Gilmer’s closing statement using your knowledge of the trial so far. You should make reference to the events as told by both parties, the Ewells and Tom Robinson. Consider the values and attitudes that existed at that time and how Mr Gilmer might represent these and play on the prejudices of the jurymen. When you have written your closing statement, record it using Garageband. Consider how certain sound effects might enhance your podcast, such as a restless crowd, the gavel of the judge etc. Duration: 3-5 mins Hints:
• Read Atticus Finch’s closing statement on page 224 and use this as a guide
• Use sound effects to enhance the sense of setting
• Rehearse your delivery of the closing statement before you record: you are passionate about this case and strongly believe you are right. You must use your voice effectively to persuade the jury.
• You might use quotes from other characters in the trial to help you justify your argument.
Use the guidelines below to assist you in recording and saving. Your teacher will
advise you about how to hand in your completed podcast.
