developed:• urban DSS for pressure management and

leakage minimization • DSS for optimal water source selection• household DSS for raising user awareness • water pricing DSS

addressing efficiency along the urban water cycle in 2 pilot cities: Skiathos, GR

and Sosnowiec, PL

2 very different case studies:

•Skiathos:•a highly touristic island in Greece with seasonally variable water demand, very low-tech conditions, one of the oldest networks in Greece and with the highest leakage; no DMAs, limited data history, small village community and mentality,

not computer-savvy

•Sosnowiec:• typical urban environment, not many differences in water demand seasonality,

high-tech, low leakage, divided into DMAs

attention given to socio-economic and infrastructure aspects of the 2 communities (including language) and behaviour of end-users so that the use of project outputs is encouraged.

Overall, positive impact in the efficient use of water through our DSS tools that will lead to optimal

water quality, water and energy savings by better managing demand, minimising household use and

appropriate pricing policies.

CURRENT PILOT LESSONS

• Physical access to infrastrucutre difficult

• Careful handling of time zones and timestamps

• Challenges with IoT in households settings for conf and maintenance (e.g. remote access): - Plug and Play needed

• The need for a variety of methods for connecting to sensors, at-rest and in-motion

• Data Quality checks with domain experts

• Wide variation of expectations of from End-Users (Business Manager vs. School Kid)

THE IMPACTS OF INNOVATION IN FP7/H2020 PROJECTS

Motivation

• Water security is compromised by different threat scenarios

(deliberate or undeliberate contamination);

• Real time detection is essential for reducing impact of water security events;

• No online sensors for microbial detection, radiological detection availableonly a few sensors for specific chemicals detection (e.g. Al, TOC);

• No reliable tools for real time detection and online simulation are available;

• No end to end holistic solution available for water safety,

from detection to event management of water safety event!

Page 44: ICT4water FP7 ICT 2013 final · FP7 ICT 2013: chaired by Chrysi Laspidou CERTH UNIVERSITY OF THETSSALY. ... will have a positive impact in urban water management practices and control

Project’s Objectives

SAFEWATER is developing a global generic solution for detection and

mitigation of drinking water event resulting from CBRN contamination:

– By developing improved contamination alert systems for the detection of abnormal behaviour in large drinking water systems;

– By developing spatial detection models and simulators to determine the contamination’s source and spread;

– By developing new water quality sensors to add to the existing ones;

– By testing the system in three water utilities simulating 6 different usage cases;

Summary – Expected Impact

– Enhanced monitoring systems allowing for real-time detection of CBRN contaminants in drinking water;

– Improving event management procedures and supporting decision making;

– Evaluation of the propagation & contamination for better preparedness, response and management of the crisis;

– Step towards an holistic solution for water safety, from detection to event

management of water safety event;

SAFEWATER will hold its final event 23-24 November 2016 in Zurich
