Palo was one of the
hardest hit municipalities
in Eastern Leyte. The
entire municipality was
severely devastated by the
super typhoon.
CRS is supporting 10,000
households whose
shelters and latrines were
affected

What is an Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)?
An extended septic tank for multiple households with a series of
4-6 chambers with baffles that aids in the digestion of sludge using
gravity and improved water quality of the effluent leaving the
chambers. This technology does not pollute the groundwater and
can save space.
![Page 9: ICT4D 2015 - GIS-attributed Data Collection and Spatial Analysis for Improved Community Sanitation - Janeen Cayetano](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022022415/5a6d61437f8b9ac2418b5f61/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
Advantages
• Cost is cheaper than individual septic tank $4100 ABR
for 8 HH
– $500 per HH vs $650-$700 per HH (individual septic tank)
• Can be shared minimum of 3 or more households or 64
users
– 40-60 liters/person/day ABR capacity: 3 cu.m/day
• High-tech design using premium composite materials
and quality management result in product lifetime of +/-
15 years.

households should be
equipped with an ABR?
