PHILCAMSAT Receives OPITO Accreditation The Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training Inc. (PHILCAMSAT) has recently been granted accreditation by the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization (OPITO) to deliver offshore survival training courses at The MAST in Maragondon, Cavite. The courses, to be developed in partnership with Northern Marine Management, will follow the OPITO syllabus for the oil and gas offshore workforce and appropriate international accreditation standards for the deep sea workforce. A unique, not-for-profit organization, OPITO is committed to developing a safe and skilled oil and gas sector through the provision of an effective framework addressing relevant industry issues through a well- established network of specialists and partners. ICS Elects New Chairman The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has elected a new Chairman, Mr. Esben Poulsson of Singapore, during its annual general meeting held last June 2 in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Poulsson succeeds Mr. Masamichi Morooka of Japan who served as chairman for four years. Being at the helm of the industry’s most influential international trade association, Mr. Poulsson will serve as a leading representative of the global shipping industry, overseeing its engagement with regulatory bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO). Speaking after his unanimous election into office, Mr. Poulsson said, “I am very honored to have been elected by the ICS member national shipowner associations. Being Chairman is a big responsibility and my primary task will be to ensure that ICS continues to represent the considered views of the entire industry. This means reflecting and reconciling the opinions of different ship types and trades, different national viewpoints, and the interests of shipping companies big and small.” Mr. Poulsson will be supported in his new role by four ICS Vice Chairmen: Mr. John C Lyras of Greece, Mrs. Karin Orsel of the Netherlands, Mr. Mark Martecchini of Liberia and PTC CEO Gerardo Borromeo who has served in this capacity since his election in 2011. 05/2016 Volume 12 Issue 5 PTC Mil-Com Aviation Training Center held a graduation ceremony for the pioneering batch of its Flight Attendant Training Program last June 11, 2016 at the PTC Mil-Com Cabin Simulator Center in Paranaque City. A total of 8 trainees successfully passed their examination and received their training completion certificates. Gracing the occasion was Ms. Sheryll Andrade, Line Administrator of PAL Express, who delivered an inspirational message to the trainees. The 15-day Flight Attendant Training Program is designed to equip trainees with the necessary competence and confidence to pursue a career in the airline industry. Through the use of PTC Mil-Com’s A320 Cabin Simulator, the students undergo training modules on aircraft familiarization, aircraft door operations, and safety and emergency procedures. The training also covers personality development, grooming, customer service and communication skills. This program is open to applicants who are 18 years old and above, who have completed two years of college, and who meet industry-standard height requirements. Manalo, ANGKLA was among the 46 organizations proclaimed by the Commission on Elections to occupy 59 seats in the House of Representatives beginning June 30, 2016. “During ANGKLA’s first term in Congress, we endeavored to institute far-reaching reforms in the maritime sector. We introduced and supported more than a hundred laws, resolutions and policy reforms that will better promote shipping and resolve other matters of national importance,” said Cong. Manalo. “Notwithstanding these milestones, much remains to be done in order to fulfill ANGKLA’s vision. We are honored to be able to continue our efforts in transforming the Philippines into a true maritime nation with more world-class vessels, which will be built by world class Filipino ship builders in the Philippines, manned by competent Filipino crew, registered under Philippine flag, operated by Philippine ship management companies, and owned by no less than Filipinos.” PTC Group Summer Adventure Employees of the PTC Group and their families had an unforgettable Summer Adventure on the pristine shores of Montemar Beach Club in Bagac, Bataan at the company’s annual outing last June 4, 2016. Aside from basking in the white sand and sparkling waters of Bataan, attendees also enjoyed bonding with their fellow employees through fun yet competitive team building activities. Sporty ones meanwhile battled each other in friendly games of beach volleyball and kayak racing. PTC-CSJ Reports 3G Accomplishments for SY 2015-2016 PTC-CSJ Foundation ended School Year 2015-2016 with key accomplishments in its flagship education program, Growing Good to Great Kids or 3G Program, implemented in two public elementary schools in Muntinlupa City – Bayanan Elementary School-Main (BESM) and Lakeview Elementary School (LES). 3G’s nutrition enhancement component provided daily lunch for 495 undernourished Kinder to Grade 2 students of the two schools, which resulted in a 100% normal nutritional status by the end of the school year. On learning enrichment, a 15-day Reading Camp was piloted from April 11 to 29 in BESM, LES and Sucat Elementary School-Main (SESM). The Reading Camp is a summer feeding and remedial reading program that benefited 274 slow and non-readers from Kinder to Grade 3. Prior to the Reading Camp, 76 teachers of the three schools participated in a training workshop to further enhance their teaching skills in the area of reading. WMU EPDCs Slated for Delivery on September The World Maritime University (WMU), globally-renowned for its culture of excellence in maritime education, is once again bringing to the Philippines its Executive and Professional Development Courses (EPDCs), in cooperation with PTC’s training arm PHILCAMSAT. Introduced in 2015, the program initially offered Shipping Finance and Financial Maritime Management and Shipping and Risk Management, two courses which provided a unique blend of academic proficiency and professional knowledge designed to help students further enrich their maritime knowledge. This year, WMU will be once again offering Shipping Finance, Maritime Investment and Risk Management, along with a new course on Tactics in the Satisfaction of Maritime Claims, scheduled on September 1 to 3 at the Asian Institute of Management Conference Center in Makati. Both courses will also be offered for Visayas- based maritime professionals on September 5 to 7 at the Radisson Blu Cebu in Cebu City. PTC Mil-Com Aviation Training Center held a graduation ceremony for the pioneering batch of its Flight Attendant Training Program last June 11, 2016 at the PTC Mil-Com Cabin Simulator Center in Paranaque City. A total of 8 trainees successfully passed their examination and received their training completion certificates. Gracing the occasion was Ms. Sheryll Andrade, Line Administrator of PAL Express, who delivered an inspirational message to the trainees.

NSC Marin Holds Appreciation Dinner for ScholarsNSC Marin hosted a thanksgiving dinner last May 30, 2016 at the PICC Banquet Hall in Pasay City to honor 10 of its scholars who have recently graduated from the Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) under the Malayan Colleges of Laguna. Marin Shipmanagement’s Ms. Martina Meinders, Managing Director, and Ms. Stella Maouri, Crew Manager/Management Representative, were present at the event to personallycongratulate the graduates and impart some words of inspiration to the cadets. Mayor Poblete of Silang Visits PTCMayor Emilia Lourdes Fule Poblete from the Municipality of Silang, Cavite paid a courtesy visit to PTC last May 17, 2016. During her visit, Mayor Poblete was given a tour of PHILCAMSAT and met with executives of the PTC Group to express her support for the Silang Township project to be developed by ACM Homes. The project is envisioned to be a 300-hectare vibrant community that promotes sustainability while maintaining the distinctive culture and attributes of Silang. By encouraging community spirit, preserving Silang’s agricultural heritage, and promoting the sensitive integration of ecological systems, ACM hopes to introduce a new paradigm in living through this flagship project.

PTC Selected as Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia FinalistPhilippine Transmarine Carriers, Inc. has qualified as a finalist for the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia 2016 which recognizes individuals and companies for their outstanding contributions to Asia’s maritime industry. PTC was selected as one of the contenders for the Education & Training Award in recognition of its Senior High School Maritime Track Early Implementer Program or Project Balanghay, a joint initiative with ANGKLA and the Department of Education. The criteria for selection by a select panel of judges includes : investment in new facilities and courses; average experience per lecturer/teacher; growth in

number of graduates; innovation in teaching techniques; ease of access to learning and training materials; and the update of educational materials to keep up with market changes.

Winners will be announced at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia 2016 gala dinner presentation on July 15, 2016 at the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore.

Komaya Crew Conference and Family DayKomaya Shipping held its annual Officers and Crew Conference last May 26 to 27. Day One tackled updated IMO Requirements, Komaya’s IMS Requirements, Effective Communication and ChartCo Passage Manager Training. The second day featured sessions on Shell Reflective Learning, onboard safety, and crew wellness. To culminate the conference, the company treated the officers, crew, and their families to a Komaya Family Day - a fun, relaxing time at the Terrazas de Punta Fuego beach resort in Nasugbu, Batangas.

education and prevention, Medical Director Dr. Antonio Abaya took part in NIVA Education’s course on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Risks On Board Ships last April 25 to 27, 2016 at the Radisson BLU Saga Hotel in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Designed to give participants a thorough understanding of today’s safety and health risk issues associated with being a seafarer, the course was delivered by lecturers who are prominent researchers and medical officers on board a wide variety of ships. Among the critical topics covered were the implications of OSH management on a globalized maritime workforce, the roles of the health professional (HP) in maritime OSH risk management, safety management and treatment of illness and injury at sea, OSH risk management ashore and at sea and work-life balance at sea. Founded in 1982, the Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health (NIVA) has been an active player in the field of occupational health and safety education for more than 30 years with over 10,500 experts trained from approximately 40 countries. Today, it is the only institute in Europe that solely focuses on international advanced level occupational education.

CTI was likewise honored for their outstanding sales performance by leading computer reservations system Galileo and international carrier United Airlines during their respective annual awards this year.

Northern Star Named as Top Branded Marketer of the Year by CaltexNorthern Star Energy was honored as the Top Branded Marketer of the Year during the Caltex Awards Night held last April 28, 2016 at Misibis Bay in Albay, Bicol. The award is given by Caltex to its partners to recognize the year’s top performers based on a set of criteria which include Volume Growth, Customer Experience/Appreciation, CALTEX Amazing Restroom Experience (CARE), Loyalty Rewards/Promotions and Image Survey. The award is a testimony to Northern Star’s commitment to provide unparalleled service to its partners.

PTC Group Joins Shake Drill 2016The PTC Group took part in the second metro-wide Shake Drill, held on June 22 and spearheaded by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, as part of company’s efforts to promote a culture of disaster and emergency preparedness among its employees. The drill simulates the PTC Group’s emergency response, rescue and relief operations in the event of a 7.2-magnitude earthquake. All PTC Group employees, building occupants and guests at First Maritime Place, Feron, Guadalupe Building, Merry Land Plaza and Pryce Center participated in the simulation. Employees of Northern Star and ACM Homes simultaneously conducted the drill in their respective offices. During the activity, participants were required to perform the duck, cover and hold practice before evacuating their offices and proceeding to designated open areas near their locations.

WMU Study Highlights Global Strategy for Women Seafarers The World Maritime University (WMU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have launched a project to develop “A Global Strategy for Women Seafarers: Resourcing the Maritime Sector.” The project is spearheaded by principal investigator Dr. Momoko Kitada, WMU Assistant Professor, and seeks to examine gender-related policies, practices and legislation within the maritime industry, as well as, the systems required to incorporate relevant strategies addressing education, employment and re-training for female seafarers.

In coordination with WIMPAHIL, the study featured some of PTC’s and CMET’s very own female global maritime professionals including Chevron’s 3/O Vienna Grace Saballa and 3/O Charita Salinas; Exmar Shipmanagement’s 3/O Jean Pontilla and 4/O Jennifer Jaurigue; GoTa Ship Management’s WPR Ruth Buena; Finnlines’ MSM Edelyn Vailoces; Grindrod Shipping’s 4/E Micah De Guzman, 4/E Ma. Joanna Limbo Calida and 2/M Laarni V. Espinosa; Northern Marine Management’s 3/E Sherrain Dominguez; and Seaspan’s D/CDT Jennelyn Obrero and E/CDT Jamie Lee Dolendo, who, in their respective capacities, have all successfully showcased the competence of women in the traditionally male-dominated seafaring profession.
